Was in Moscow,s Clermont,Oh,and noted the school was on Wells Street. Noted the huge limestone mine across on the Carntown,Pendleton Co,Ky bank, and know there is a Wells Creek nearby. My Capt-Lt-Rev-JP George Brown owned 500-1000 acres in the Carntown,Pendleton Co,Ky area 1798-1802+. 1802,he,and others bought 1000 acres NORTH UP RT 743 from Moscow,Clermont Co,Oh. 1750 era,in the Westminster, and Hampstead,Md area,Brown was born, with a Bron aunt m to Richard Wells,of James-father of 20+ kids. 1770's Brown, and the Richard Wells lived on Harmon's and Cross Creeks, Weirton and Wellsburb,WV panhandle-Burgetown Pa with other kinsmen including Alexander and Charles Wells, who also had 20+ kids. Hi Marsha I have two Abraham WOODs in my database. The first one I mentioned in my post. He married Anna Wood daughter of John Sr. This information came from someone else and I do not have a reference. I have no further information on him. The other was a grandson of John WOOD Sr. His father was Jeriah. Mother is unknown. Based on Jeriah's birth date, this Abraham could have been born sometime after approximately 1775-1780 so he is probably too young to be yours. Hi All I apologize for cross postings. I am trying to track down Ezekiel E. TURNER. His descendants include the families below from Clark and Clermont Counties, Ohio and KY, in the mid to late 1800s: Names include TURNER, WOOD, DAY, THOMPSON & MCMURCHY in Ohio or KY -- 1800s Ezekiel Edwin TURNER was born Dec 17, 1817. According to Census records, he was in Clark Co. Ohio in 1860 and in Tate Township, Clermont Co. Ohio in 1850,1870 & 1880. His birthplace listed in the various Censuses as PA , KY and Ohio. The 1880 Census also lists his parents birthplace as PA. Ezekiel died June 2, 1889. He is buried in and his will was probated in Clermont Co. On January 19, 1845, Ezekiel married Charlotte W. THOMPSON who reportedly has roots back to the Mayflower. Charlotte was born Sept 9, 1816. Birth state for her is shown as both Ohio and PA. She died in Clermont Co in 1873. They had four daughters, Mary (died unmarried at age 16), Melissa Jane, Lucy Ann and Laura Elizabeth. They are all shown as being born in Ohio. Lucy is my great-grandmother. Ezekiel took a new wife, Keziah ? after Charlotte died and before 1880. The TURNER daughters married as follows: Melissa married William C. MCMURCHY. Lucy married George Absalom WOOD and Laura married Henry H,.DAY. Melissa and Laura apparently stayed in OH. Lucy moved to Science Hill/Pulaski KY. Is anyone familiar with any of these names? OR, does anyone have access to Land Records in Clermont Co. that might show who Ezekiel got his land from? Thanks in advance. Walter Dowling Wood wwood@cfl.rr.com http://home.cfl.rr.com/wwood/

Dear friends, I recently ordered some maps from the County Engineer's Offices in both counties and found them very useful in doing research there. They have the names of the roads (many named after our early ancestors!), show the waterways and have other information of use to genealogists. Sources of data-Evert's 1880 history and "my Mom told me" 2,200 acre flood control Lake Harsha was built 1970-75 within 10,000 acre East Fork State park.. Much of the area of the Lake, and park, had been settled by Jerseymen from old Gloucester Co,NJ ,and e Princeton NJ. 1803+ A natural hill a mile long called "the old SLADE farm, when added to a modern short dam of the East Fork of the Little Miami River,sw Batavia twnsp creeated a -roughly- hourglass lake, with the west pool of 1000 acres at the dam. Then came a narrow place- now called Tate [twnsp] boat launch, and a 2nd wide place of 1000 acres in s Williamsburg, and n Tate Township. [not in view from dam.] Slade Road runs west from RT 222 to the dam, and allows a beautiful drive over the dam,and the Slade farm, and the saddle dam, ,and, if was extended a bit would pass the Lee Spinnelli, and the Mason-Winner, and Greenbrier Methodist cemetary. Slade Rd, between Rt 222 and the dam, "may" have passed Richard and Robert Doughty's, and the Strimple place. South from the true dam,or the boat ramp nearby can be seen Back,Ulrey's,and Corker's runs entering from the south like fingers. Back run had Wm Jeffer's making nail, and Tingley,Jr's tannery, and my grandpa Tib Brown's school no 8 of Monroe Twnsp. Ulrey's Run also flows from Monroe Twnsp, into Tate, and had the 1st,1798,settlement in the lake bounds. Teegarden,Ulrey,Conn,Gerrard, Chandler,Sheppard, Pinkham to name a few. Mostly hunter types once from sw most Pa. Corker's Run has the mother church of the Jersey colony,Old Bethel Methodist. Tuckerton NJ Jenkins and White, Wm Simonds, James Blackwood,John Conover, John and Robert Leeds, more. 5 acres to tended cemetart, and an 1817 frame church remodled in 1865. Bantam lies between Ulrey's and Corker's, and was Benj Ely's store and p.o. ,Hitch's making wagon,Eben Hill teaching school, and Pres Grant's Simpson's going to Presbyterian church. Boyhood farm of Rev carlely@juno.com who has Leeds twice, and 1781 Galloway twnsp,NJ ELY, and Gest's and Dimmitt's down creek from the dam,1798. I call that western big pool of water by the dam-1000 acres- ELK LICK. Elk Lick village was flooded and removed, but after James Blackman>>>>Earl Slade's frame was rebuilt in Sharon Woods park village, n e Cincinnati. Atop the visable island was Elk Lick 1 room school, where Lee Phillips and JB Whitt were 1st schooled. JB's wife,Aileen,is Clermont genealogy's treasure, authoring 14 resource books, and she is know to hike the dam,at times. You can see, from the saddle dam,or outlooks on the ol Slade farm, the Tate beach. That was the homesite of Rev John and Sarah Blackman Collins, who led,in 1803,the 1st of 100 + families from Atlantic Co,NJ. Their stone, and their son's brick mansion, survivied til the Corps of Engineer's wrecking ball 1970's. Next place east, owned by absentee Josiah Albertson,of the "Blue Anchor"INN of mid NJ'S pines had his kinsman, THOMAS STRING. .Noah Conover m String's wife Next east,is the mill site of Isaac and Sophia Somers Higbee, and Cornelius McCollum and Leeds WIFE. Grant Snider, and Carson Henderson also lived there, and Steelman ,BINNINGS,and Burnet's up the hill Across, and n e was my Samuel Ely m 1804 NJ Rachel Leeds, and nw,her sister,Betsy Leeds Wilson. To the nw of them was James Ewan, mentioned by Mrs Daniel Doughty, in the Atlantic Co,NJ Hist Soc quarterly. John Allen, hermit, mined gold on EWAN. Some of my Hitch uncles lived near the Island, where later Renskie and Wretzer sp?' lived. Daddy Joe Baughman farmed on Slab Camp, just east of the saddle dam. My Mom played at Gracie BAUGHMAN'S WEDDING there in 1941,when she m Jim Hulick. Gracie was my Mom's very last visiter,at home before her death. 2-3 hours later,I diald 911 1 last time. [tears]. There was a steep, narrow, lonely road up the hill from Baughman's,or where the saddle dam ends. 1942-46, the Ireton's and my parents took the Spinelli's home up that hill, and we would play with Coolgrandmah@yahoo.com. Well, she was a girl. We would play with her twin brother, and bro,Lee. And,we are back to the Winner-Mason-Greenbrier neighborhood without mentioning the Atchley's,Curless,Harden's,Lukemeyer's,Chamber's, Davis, etc junt north,up that boat ramp hill from near Elk Lick Island, and the Hitches. Boy,wish I'd been able to exersise hiking on the dam as long as it's taked to type this. Is typing considered cardiac rehab?
My daily hikes take me past the old, frame, saltbox built by my Rev Jesse Justice, 1762-1826, or his son,Robert, b 1805. 1805 Rev Jesse Justice sold farms on Mantua and Raccoon creek,Gloucester Co,NJ and bought 540 acres here east of Cincinnati at Bethel,sw Ohio. From a newspaper account, I know he 1st had a log cabin[s]. His son,my Savil [Wilson] Justice ,married Ruhama Blackman, and he also 1st had a log cabin,on the land just west. I keep walking by the frame of Jesse,or Robert Justice, and wonder which built it, and when. Yesterday,I had a visitor who was raised in the old frame from 1941. The exceptional thing about the old salt box is the number of windows. Often two windows side by side. I can think of no SW Ohio houses with so many windows. [My visitor said the floor joists are rounds, and just sawed flat on the top side, which hints at economy, yet there are all these windows. 25,he said, where similar aged houses in sw Ohio had 10-14. Question-around the s NJ glassworks, were houses built with many windows promoting glass pane use? Question no 2, in s NJ,did the window glass makers promote their product by giving a special deal on panes to a new house being built on a major road? Rev Jesse Justice had rode NJ Methodist circut's 1798-1803.. A hint to me that he is the builder is the house, and the barn well in front, near the roadway. In his circut riding days, surely he often longed for water, for horse and man. I had a 2nd thought this am. 1823-30,Pugh and Teater had a glassworks on the Ohio River where the Zimmer Power Plant stands today. Moscow, this Clermont Co,Oh. Would Pugh and Teater make a deal with an old minister-farmer-blacksmith for window panes because his house was beside a major road. Rt 125. Rev Jesse Justice died in Aug,1826, and left records of preaching 10-15 miles from home nearly that late. His, widow,Elizabeth,of Savel Wilson,b Woodbury,NJ died at the next farm in 1847. I'm guessing 1823-Aug,1826 as when construction of the old house was started. I doubt if son,Robert,b 1805, would have been able to build in that 1823-30 era of the glass factory. Besides,"I WANT' it to be built by my direct ancestoir, not a many great uncle! Several places this old house has windows side,by side, creating a picture window 'effect..I could see a merchant,in Philadelphia,Woodbury,or Cincinnati building on the street side such a house as a store front. But this is a farm house. But Rev Jesse Justice did have 2 sons that were merchants. Bethel, and Cincinnati'Ohio. By the 1825-30 era. And much visiting over the 25 miles between farm and city. Anybody passing on Ohio RT 125 west of Bethel,I speak of the Quehl estate, just west of Sugartree Rd,on the south side, or just east of what was Fagley's Fruit Farm. Herman, You come by your talent (writing prowess) legitimately. It's in your genes! This is one of the rewards of genealogical research, finding out who are ancestors were, and what they did. We ARE what we WERE. ...As a comparative, my German maiden name translates to "scribe" which means 'writer' and here I are! ...One German Great-Grandfather brought the first printing press to Mount Sterling, OH, and started the first newspaper there. It is a joy to read his Editorials, poetry, etc, and know all of those old newspapers are preserved in the Archives of Ohio History. ...Another Great-Grandfather had a 1,000 acre cotton plantation in Louisiana, which I learned about here recently. I began recalling the year I had the impulse to grow COTTON in my backyard Ohio garden and was the laugh of the neighborhood. The 12 plants grew magnificently to the point someone asked if I were going to buy a cotton-gin for harvesting? (To save money, I bought a bottle of Gin and brought in some friends to help out.) ...One Great-Grandparent started the first bank in his town. ...A Grandfather was President of BankOhio in Columbus. It all translates that this granddaughter LOVES the smell of money! If we had the misfortune of having any train robbers or horse thieves in our ancestry, we would have to kick-in with...we shall overcome? Good for you Herm. I know you are proud of Miss Ruie and I know she would be proud of you. Best Wishes! Janine in TN
She died before I was born. She wrote,in the 1920's, a family history in my lap. She taught at Bantam,Anti-Bantam,and Bethel from age 15,after being schooled in New Richmond. 50 years, she taught Sunday school at the Bantam Prsbyterian But,the thing that makes her stand out-60 years she wrote a Bantam column for the "Clermont Sun "newspaper. The week she died,at 78,she wrote her Bantam column,"and" read two books. My Mom said they played cards that last night. When they quit for the night, Ruie said"I'll say 'GOOD BYE" rather than "Good Night" and went up to bed. And she had a stroke that night, and soon died. 60 years worth of her Bantam columns are on microfilm at the library in Batavia. How often do you hear people say,"We should have asked them while they lived" "All our records burned when the house burnt" "Everything was lost in the flood" 60 years of Bantam columns! 60 times 52. 3120 columns Ruie wrote are in Batavia. Bantam's a village in western Tate twnsp. I know he column contain some Monroe twnsp; some Batavia twnsp; some Williamsburg twnsp. 10-20 of those 60 years, she had the neighbrhood's telephone. 15 years, she had the neighborhood's rail stop. 50 years of going to one church, and being related to everybody in the other. 15 of those years, she lived in the town of Bethel. She was 78 in 1938. 3120 newspaper columns!
The Delaware River had a few Dutch and was considered New Netherlands when a ship of Swedes arrivided in 1838 under ex Dutch gov Minuit. 1638-56 was the era of the weak penal colony of New Sweden, whose governor and church were on an island s e Philadelphia [airport] and the colony extended south to mid Del,and to a fort in very sw NJ. At Manhattan,in 1656,the DUTCH gathered their militia, and ships from the city of Amerstdam, and took control of this thorn in their side. 1664 the English took New Netherlands, including the Delaware. 1667 the Dutch retook it a short while. Some records survive from the rule of all three. The English ruled both banks from Upland-Chester Co,Pa. 1675 was the 1st ship of Anglo-Irish Quakers to Salem under Fenwick. 1679 was Quakers from London and Yorkshire, who settled Burlington,NJ and started a monthly Quaker meeting for all the rivers records-survivies. 1682,Wm Penn, himself, crossed on the "Welcome ' with Dr Thomas Wynne[mine]. Hans and Ella Olafsdatter crossed to very sw Burlington Co,NJ [pENNSAUKEN Creek]. 1695 James Steelman moved to the Great Harbor,NJ shore area. Say,1750's a Blackman's Presbyterian Meeting house was [?] near English Creek and Bargaintown,NJ and the circut minister, from the mid-NJ iNDIANS. Mary Conover married John Ramsay in April 1868 in Clermont County. They had four children, Charles, Ida, Mame, and Laura. Apparently Mary died in 1878. Does anyone know this family? I'm looking for the burial location for Mary, and what happened to the rest of her family after she died. Thanks for the help. Marty Cassidy cassidym@accessone.com
