Sarah Jane Butler and Wm. E. Dalie married 1844 in Clermont County. They had sons George Everett and Charles Butler Dalie. Does anyone know more about this family....the Butler's.....the Dalies? thanks, Marilyn
This is the Stephen Bennett that I found in the Laurel Cemetery and date is verified by stone marker. He is one of 9 known children of Patrick Bennett. Here things get a little vague as this Stephen was to have been the administrator of Patrick's will ( Clermont Co. Probate Aug 8, 1836 settled in 1865) but for some unknown reason a brother Jesse who had been born when family lived in Washington Twp. Pen. wound up being the administrator. From records that I have found it would seem that Stephen's first wife was Sarah -?- d. Sept. 10, 1830 second -Rachel Armstrong d.July 6, 1838 & third -Margaret Rarlin M-. April 8 ,1841. Now I wonder if it was his son ( a Stephen # 2 ? ) that was the Express Agent found in both Kansas and MO.and which wife was the mother of the second Stephen, as I have no dates for him. The LDS records are so confused here that they leave more questions than answers..Note most of my info was taken from census of 1850 Monroe Twp. Clermont Co. pg 28 and the History of Rush Co. IN. 1879 edition.
I am with you in starting to think we are dealing 2 or 3 different Stephen Bennett's. Since we know that at least one father and son had same first name. My Stephen is said to at one time have owned ground in the Indian Creek area but so far have not been able to pin down exact location this would move my Stephen further away from yours
In querying the archives of this mailing list I came across a post by Bev elmshauser containing the following regarding early Clermont Co. marriage records: Stephen Bennet ,widower, Rachel Armstrong , 17 dec 1835 by, Timothy Hardin Justice of the Peace By this entry it would appear that the Stephen Bennett that married Rachel Armstrong did indeed lose his first wife (Sarah?). I think this information is a mixing of a couple of Stephen Bennet's. I'll break down what I think is correct: My Stephen Bennett married Margaret Rardin 8 Apr. 1841. She was a widower and her maiden name is Mitchell and she was born 15 December 1796 in Kentucky. She married John Rardin 28 June 1815 in Campbell Co., KY. John Rardin died 29 November 1836 in Indiana. My Stephen Nathaniel Bennett's mother died when he was born and according to what I can find he was born about 1830. Given Sarah's death date of 10 September 1830, she could be my Stephen Nathaniel's mother. Stephen Nathaniel's daughter doesn't mention any other wives except for Stephen N's mother and Margaret Rardin. My Stephen Nathaniel Bennett married Eliza Jane Curless 20 November 1856. According to Stephen N.'s daughter, his father Stephen gave him 80 Acres as a wedding gift. What is the date that the 80 acres had titled changed from Stephen to Stephen N.? Given my information, I believe that the 1850 Clermont Co., OH Census entry is indeed my Stephen Bennett and wife Margaret Mitchell Rardin Bennett. The autobiography of Stephen Nathaniel Bennett's daughter states that her grandfather was born on Irish soil. Her autobiography states: "Grandfather Bennett was born in Ireland. I know nothing of my grandparents except this brief fact, that father's father was born on Irish soil. After he and Grandmother--whose birthplace I know nothing of--came to the United States, they owned three hundred and twenty acres near Cincinnati, Ohio, where my father (Stephen Nathaniel Bennett) was born. Grandmother died when father was born. Grandfather was married the second time to a Mrs. Raredon, mother of two sons. One was a Union Pacific agent. My father wandered away from his father's home when a youth but returned to Cincinnati, Ohio, when he was quite a young man. Grandfather brought about the acquaintance of father and Eliza Jane Curless, a very sweet girl who was versed in the arts, not only in the art of homemaking but the art of putting beautiful colors of nature on canvas in such a way that one could feel so near the Creator. Father and Mother were married in Cincinnati, Ohio. Grandfather gave them eighty acres near Springfield, Ohio for a wedding present. I was born August 13, 1859 in Springfield, Ohio. I have one sister, Ida, born on the eightty acres in Miami County. She and I went to school from the eighty acres to Concinnati." The last mention she makes of her father is this: "My father sold the eighty acres in Ohio and went to Sedalia, Missouri. We lived there for four years, later taking homestead in Kansas near Towanda." The rest of her autobiography is centered on her meeting her future husband and the travels that her husband and her had. So far I have been able to prove most everything that she has written, except some of the dates are a little off, but just by a year or two. I hope that someone out there has even more proof towards clearing up my ancestors Stephen Bennett and his son Stephen Nathaniel. Thanks all for your help so far, JB -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, February 25, 2005 6:15 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [OHCLER] Looking for Info Regarding Stephen Bennett and family My Stephen Bennett is the son of Patrick Bennett born near Bellfast...Stephen was supposed to have been born in Ireland but Patrick was in and owned property in Penna. I've been wondering about Hermon, too. At one time he had a medical problem which required that he walk daily -- something we who sit at the computer too long probably need to do. I ended up with swollen calves, ankles and feet as a result of not heeding my own advice. Hope Hermon is not having another problem. Gang, Here is what I do know regarding the Stephen Bennett family from Ohio: 1. He was born "on Irish soil" according to his granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth Bennett. 2. He owned 320 acres near Cincinnati, Ohio. 3. He had a son by the name of Stephen Nathaniel Bennett 4. His first wife died soon after Stephen Nathaniel Bennett was born. (This would be around 1833 based on census dates) 5. He married Margaret Mitchell Rardin 6. Margaret was a widow and mother of two sons. One of these sons was a Union Pacific agent. 7. His son, Stephen Nathaniel Bennett married Eliza Jane Curless on 20 November 1856 in Clermont Co. 8. He gave his son Stephen Nathaniel Bennett 80 acres near Springfield, Ohio. These 80 acres were or are a part of Miami County, OH. These 80 acres were also close enough to Cincinnati that Nathaniel's children attended school in Cincinnati. All the above information was gathered from an Autobiography written by Sarah Elizabeth Bennett 10 December 1937. What I have dug up myself is: 1. There is a Stephen Bennet that married Rachel Armstrong 17 Nov. 1835. (Is this Stephen's first wife?) 2. Stephen Bennett married Margaret Rardin on 8 April 1841. 3. Stephen Nathaniel Bennet, under the name of Nathaniel Benet, was counted in the 1860 Union Twp., Champaign Co., OH census Page 144 Line 18. He is living with Eliza, Elizabeth, and Ida M. as well as Charlotte M. Curless. 4. I was able to find a Stephen Bennett of the Monroe Twp in an index for the 1830 and 1840 Clermont Co. census. (Does anyone have the actual census info?) 5. There is a Nathaniel Bennett in Springfield Twp according to the index of the 1840 Clermont Co. census (Is this the 80 acres given by his father? Does anyone happen to have this census info also?) 6. Other than the index entries I have not seen the actual 1830 and 1840 census, so do not know what Stephen's household looked like. 7. Stephen Nathaniel Bennett is counted in the 1870 Benton Co. MO census. He has Eliza, Elizabeth, and Ida M. still living with him along with a Maria Curless and a Edny Curless. 8. Stephen Nathaniel Bennett is counted in the 1880 Butler Co., KS census. Here are a couple of other items extracted from Sarah Elizabeth's autobiography: "My father sold the eighty acres in Ohio and went to Sedalia, Missouri. We lived there for 4 years, later taking homestead in Kansas near Towanda." The fact that Nathaniel was counted in the 1870 Missouri and the 1880 Kansas census appears to support this. "I have one sister, Ida, born on the eighty acres in Miami County. She and I went to school from the eighty acres to Cincinnati." It is these statements that I have gotten the clues regarding the possible location of Stephen N.'s eighty acres. I was able to locate a Nathan Bennett in the 1900 Pottawattamie Co., IA census. He is living and working in an apartment building there as the elevator man. The only item that would make him my Nathan is the fact that he states he was born in Ohio and his father and mother were from Ireland. Other than that, I'm not certain this is my Stephen Nathaniel, but I haven't been able to locate any other ones in the 1900 census. He shows up again in the 1910 Arapahoe Co., CO census living with his daughter Sarah Elizabeth and her husband James Andrew Hunter. Sarah Elizabeth met her Husband when they lived in Towanda, Butler Co., KS. Stephen Nathaniel Bennett doesn't live long enough to appear in another census as he died 27 October 1919 in Glendale, Arapahoe Co., CO. I think that pretty much sums up my part of this as much as I know at least. If anyone happens to have any insight to this family, I'd love to hear from ya. JB Jim Butler [email protected]
Hi Carolyn and Everyone, At the moment the list has been very slow. I've been a subscriber for several years and it seems to run in "fits and starts" from time to time. There have been periods where there was no list activity for a month or more and then suddenly activity picks up again. I think we just need to be patient. I have noticed Hermon's absence too and a post to the list last month, mentioned that his juno.com email address wasn't working any more. I wonder if there is some kind of family crisis or he is sick. He's listed in the Clermont Co. phone directory so I tried calling but got no answer. Maybe we should drop him a note by snail mail? Good evening: I'm planning a trip to Clermont County in April 2005 to conduct some research on my ancestors. They resided in the northern part of the county, which is now part of Brown County. They were: Ephraim GRANGER b. 1776 d. 6 Jul 1839 Brown County Dolly (Dorothea) LAMPKIN-GRANGER-DOWNY b. abt 1780 d. abt 1854 unknown William BROWN b. abt 1787 d. ? Brown County Sarah BROWN Samuel ASHTON b. 1771 d. 1834 Brown County I'm hoping to visit the Cramer Cemetery in Brown County, where some of them are buried. I also plan to visit the probate court and library in Batavia. I am looking for suggestions on how to best use my limited time. If any one has connections to these families or can offer suggestions about what I should do in Clermont County, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much. Phillip Gray, Jr.
Dear Hermon, If you're still on this list, would love to hear from you. I have a question to ask. I tried your old email address at Juno and it came back as undeliverable. Thank you. John J. Long
Pam, Regarding your Cassidy's from Ireland, Cassidy is a name from the North. Based on the Griffith's valuation from the mid-1800's in Ireland, there were 154 Cassidy's listed in Fermanagh and 122 in Derry - both of which are in what is now Northern Ireland. There were 113 listed in Donegal, 105 in Meath and 100 in Cavan, Republic of Ireland. This is the link that tells you where the name Cassidy showed up during Griffith's valuation: http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm? Surname=cassidy&fuseaction=Go. Without Patrick's parent's names, it will be hard to find your Patrick in Ireland. Cassidy was a popular name, and so is Patrick. If you can locate his marriage or death or burial record, it may list his parents names. Then you can use this link to the Irish Family History Foundation: http://www.irish-roots.net/. Look to the left side on the screen. It lists Counties in Ireland and information on how to search for your ancestors in those respective Counties. Good luck. Just in case you might need the info in the future. Patrick Casty/Cassidy in Cincinnati apparently died before 1870 census when widow and 3 daus were still living in Ward 4 - which today is the downtown Cincinnati riverfront area. And -- I just found 1860 son Patrick age 23 living in Ward 4 -- So not yours. Based on ages and birthplaces of children, Patrick and Mary Cassidy came to Ohio from Ireland between 1840 and 1843. Barb Pamela Cassiday wrote: > Hi Barbara > Thanks for your reply. That is indeed the my family that you mentioned on the 1860 Clermont census. I'm pretty sure the son Pat listed in 1850 is not the Patrick I'm looking for. The marriage certificate for my Patrick and Martha has Patrick's age as 35 in 1853, so he would have been born about 1818. Also, I would think that if they were somehow related they would have taken in John after the death of both of his parents. > > Thanks again > Pam > > ============================== > New!
