    2. One of Aileen Whitt's recent books, following her book on the Cranston Memorial Presbyterian church at New Richmond, is her 'Monroe Presbyterian Church,Nicholsville, Clermont Co,Ohio 1831-1950".That church's cemetary is on Rt 222 A MILE NORTH OF Nicholsville. It split in the 1860's,and I grew up with the [email protected]'s Emmitt's in the split,Bantam Presbyterian .At age 10,we moved to Bethel Methodist, which is not the Old Bethel Methodist of my Bantam ancestors. North of Nicholsville was a 1000 acre survey lost by land suit about 1820 by the pioneers who settled it 1808-12. Most of them moved on -to Rush Co,Indiana rather than buy their farms a 2nd time, and a colony from sw Scotland took their place.

    3. Does anyone have a list of names regarding this Scotch settlement or any information regarding Nicholsville? I am researching John Herron and Rebecca Clarke who settled "near New Richmond" circa 1816. From a biography of one of their son's, Joseph: "Glowing accounts of the new Northwest Territory had for years been traveling eastward, and in 1816 John HERRON determined to remove thither. With his family he crossed the mountains in the great Conestoga wagons of that time, and took raft at Pittsburgh for Cincinnati. In accordance with previous arrangement with former neighbors (in Lancaster Co, PA) he found his way to Clermont County, and purchased a farm near the Ohio River, where he passed the remainder of his life. 3. There is a Philip Maines in the 1820 census in Clermont Co. Ohio and is possibly buried in Nevil. I am told his wife was Mary Wood. Would any one have information on this family, children's names, or any family stories? I believe he had a son Philip but that is all I know of his children. Any help would be appreciated. Diane

    1. Exchange rate 1852
    2. Hi Can anyone tell me how many dollars an immigrant would get for an English sovereign on landing in New York in 1852? I am an English local historian writing a book based on letters written to an immigrant who was in Nicholsville before moving on to Indiana and this is one of the questions in the first letter. As I only have a one sided correspondence I don't know the answer and hope that someone out there can help. Marjorie Harrison

    1. Re: [OHCLER]Armacost/Stairs/Wilson/Holmes
    2. Fagley has an educated guess on Wm Holmes. He witnessed either my Rev-Capt- Lt-JP George Brown's 1814 will at Big Indian Creek and Ohio RT 743, or son David Brown's 1819 will north of Laurel. George Brown was of [?] John Brown,d 1810 Hampstead,nw Baltimore. The hamlet of Armacost,Md is just east of Hampstead,Md a couple miles on a good map. Capt-Lt-Rev-JP George Brown had many uncles icluding Richard Wells,Sr, of James and 1776 Capt Richard Brown, then of the Bedford,Pa Rifles defeated on Long Island. Capt Richard Brown moved from Beford [Somerset] to Brown's Island,in the Ohio River, between Weirton,WV and Stubenville,Ohio.Capt Richard Brown married the sister of Richard Wells, Honor Wells Holmes. She was daughter of James Wells,of old Baltimore Co,Md,and she was the widowed mother of 8 [eight!] HOLMES children by her 1st husband, and then 3-4 more Brown children by her 2nd husband. 1955-1956 Bethel-Tate High basketball team,.champions of the Clermont Co tournement, included Clermont Co 1st team All-Star,Dick Armacost at piont guard, and [email protected] at center.Dick's aunt Mattie Bargwr was married to Ezra WILSON.

    3. Got so excited to see a post from Hermon (note his new aol address) that I failed miserably in posting. After all my harping about changing the subject line, look what I did! Forgot to change the subject. Apologies to all! Pat Armacost, Stairs, Wilson, Holmes anyone? Elizabeth "Libbie" Florence Armacost born Point Pleasant between 1875 and 1877, married Alva Lloyd Cole in Henry Co., IN in 1903. Her parents were John Wesley Armacost, son of Isaac and ? And Laura Stairs, daughter of Noble Stairs and Mary Wilson Holmes. Would love to have definitive answer as to mother of John Wesley (dates would indicate one wife of Isaac, printed materials another) and any information on the Wilson and Holmes lineage. William Holmes married Anna Wilson in 1818 in Clermont Co. Blank brick wall before that date! TIA, Pat
