Trying to figure out the Gills in Clermont Co records 1820's. 1820 census- Clermont, Williamsburgh John Gill 100001-31010 (not on 1830 census) only son age 0/9 = born 1811-20 Ohclermo archives lists the following: Marriage Sept 25, 1825 By J.K. Morrris, J.P Anna Gill - Samuel Williams. Is this the Samuel Williams of Williamsburg?? Did John Gill of Williamsburgh died and his widow married 2) Samuel Williams. Or is this a younger Anna Gill? "Accounts of Aquills Judd" lists "Gill daughters". If I have it right, Aquilla Judd lived in Washington Twp and died 1824. So those "Gill daughters" would be before 1824. Who are these Gill daughters who lived in/near Washington Twp????? 1830 census Clermont, Washington Twp - Wm. Gill 00001---30001--- both age 20/29 = b. 1801-10. His daughters actually born 1826-30.(If I have the right man in 1840 Ky census) Is this William Gill related to the "Gill daughters" of Aquilla Judd's accounts? - Obviously, not his daughters but perhaps his sisters?. This man is my current research effort. I believe he is the William Gill who was born abt 1803 in Bracken,Ky , by 1833 was in Pendleton Co Ky and died 1864 in Mason Co VA {now West Virginia] Can anyone help me figure this out? I've never understood why my wife's Wm and Lucretia Johnson Smith were buried on their on farm a bit north on Rt 133,or her Charles Johnson buried on [tradition] Blue Sky Park and the East Fork, instead of Hutchison's. [Greenberry] Samuel Ashton,Sr lost his 1st wife-a sister to Lucretia Johnson Smith, from Tom's River,NJ shore.I don't know when or where. The Smith's moved from NJ IN 1809. Samuel Ashton moved near future Marathon in 1811.Samuel likely lost her before Samuel Cranmer's Methodist cemetary was formed on RT 50 east of Marathon, though at least 1 Ashton was buried there. Did Rev Edmund Burdsal's chapel always bury at Bloom Rose U.B. in Brown Co?
Hello List Just wondering if anyone knows of ANY persons buried in the OLD SECTION of the Greenberry Cemetery on Marathon Glancy Road? I have a list of last names of people buried there but was told records burned so there isn't any record of whom might be in the old section. There are a few stones in this area so I know who they are but there is a very large section referenced as OLD CEMETERY AREA that there is nothing but blank page. I would very much like to piece together who might be buried in this OLD AREA. Also, if anyone would like me to put on the list the last names of the people buried there or who owns plots there just let me know. Cindy
I am at a terrible dead end and have been for quite some time. If someone on this list is in the court house in Batavia or works there, I would be so greatful for a break. Elizabeth Handy moved to Clermont shortly before 1850 In 1879-80 Book V page 598 Clermont, OH 1880 Book V 106 pages 598-599-600 a deed was made out to her where her chidlren: Patrick Handy, James Handy, Veronica Handy (Tracy), and Stephen Handy deed their inherited interest of a part of in lot 62 to their mother Elizabeth, widow of Daniel Handy. Then they ALL disappear. I have found James in Alton, IL and been able to follow; but Elizabeth and son Patrick are not appearing in the 1880 census or any time later. Elizabeth's property had to have transferred later (after 1880) to someone else, but the LDS microfilm does not index later. I would so much like to fill the gap and learn if she remarried, if she died in Clermont, or what did happen to her. The transfer of that land might give me an answer. So, if anyone has a chance to check an index for that property, I would be delighted. Also, I have the T. P. White funeral home index which I would be glad to do look ups for. Thank you for your response to my message, [email protected] Thank you for your response to my message. The Knowles you mentioned are the ones for which I am looking. The following is from a letter (dated Sept 1823) that Luther Case wrote to his sister, he mentions the Knowles family: "Very dear Sister: I received your letter which you wrote to me, just perused it and let Dr. Knowles take it and it was the last I have seen it. I am now about 150 miles from (above) Cincinnati by water and about 130 from Knowleses." "I have been at Knowles last July and they were all well but Esther she was sick when I was there and expecting every day to be sicker." "Luther and Maria were both married last new year. Maria married well and Luther a good decent girl out of a respectable family though poor. Alonso is studying law and bids fair to make a bright lawyer. He and Luther have both joined the Methodist Church." Maria(h) Knowles married Jesse Fee 31 Dec 1822; Luther married Rachel Patterson the same day. I doubt that the Cases you mentioned are related to Esther - unless they are cousins.... will have to check that out. Again, thank you - you made my first message on the Clermont list very rewarding. Wm Fee founded Felicity,Franklin twnsp,s e Clermont Co,Oh in 1817 in an area settled since the 1795-96 winter. Son Jesse Fee m a Knowles girl in 1822. Alonzo Knowles wore many hats before his 1852 death. He was an early Felicity merchant, who read law with Bethel's anti-slavery US Senator and VP candidate, Thomas Morris. Alonzo,in 1845,helped found the Felicity Chirch of Christ, and was Elder, and often minister. 1840,south of Felicity, just off Oho Rt 222,west of Rt 133,Mt Pleasant Olive] Church of Christ had been founded by former Dunkards. Alpnzo Knowles, wife, mother, and others are buried at Mt Pleasant. Alexander Case was the carpenter at Chilo,on down Rt 222 at the Ohio River,by 1826. Theiophillus sp?] Case was married in 1811 [2nd time?] by John Ross, JP who lived upriver a few miles. I think Theo Case is on the 1802 census of,then,Washington township,Clermont Co. Brown Co and Franklin township, were founded in 1818. It's possible Theo Case lived in whart became Lewis twp,Brown Co. John Ross,1811 JP of Clermont, would be located in Lewis twnsp,Brown Co,after the split. My own Tate township has a Case Rd,so-named about 1950 when road signs were installed.
Am searching for information on Dr. Watt (Wait) Knowles and descendants. He arrived in Clermont County prior to 1823. His wife was Esther Case (b. abt 1780 in CT; family moved to VT abt 1788). They had at least three children: Luther, Mariah, and Alonzo - lawyer. Luther and Mariah married the same day - 31 Dec 1822. Am trying to verify that Esther is the sister of Luther Case and they are the children of Benejah Case and Lydia Woodruff. I have a transcript of a letter written (1823) by Luther to another sister, Lucy. In the letter he mentions the Knowles and their children. Ginny-Thomas was the surname, David was the first name. 1900 Batavia census indicates he immigrated in 1847 from Wales and was naturalized in 1853. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jenny Anson Sent: Sunday, April 17, 2005 4:39 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [OHCLER] Son of William Thomas thanks for the lookup, I need to see if I can tie the informoation in. sounds interesting, but I am not sure we are tracking the same family. From the old letter it further says that son of William wa a doctor of medicine in Clermont Ohio, about 80 miles from there he married a hospital nurse, as far as I know he didn't have any children. His father's wife remained living in Ashley, she had an adopted daughter, she played the organ. not sure how to go forward with this information cheers Jenny in Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 17, 2005 7:01 PM Subject: Re: [OHCLER] Son of William Thomas > Must be a 2nd Wm Thomas, but Col Wm Thomas,ex-sheriff,and ex Elk Lick > miller and distiller, lived on the farm adjoining mine in Tate township to > the > n e. Jenny- I found one Thomas that was born in Wales on the 1880 Batavia Township, Clermont County, Ohio. This is David Thomas, age 49, which would put his birth date about 1831. David Thomas occupation is listed as Dry Goods Merchant. He is married to Bertha, age 31, born Hanover, Germany. They have children: Frederick W., age 6, Sarah E. age 5, and Jane S., age 4. All children were born in Ohio. This family also appears on the 1900 and 1910 Batavia censuses. On the 1900 census, they have more children: Walter D., age 19, Bertha, age 12, Dorothy, age 4. This entire family is still together in 1910 and all of the children are single. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jenny Anson Sent: Saturday, April 16, 2005 6:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHCLER] Son of William Thomas Dear list I am looking for son of William Thomas - born in Wales on the 30 Sept 1831 (william died Feb 1883). he left a son age 37 yrs old in 1883, a medical doctor of medicine in Clermont, Ohio. Must be a 2nd Wm Thomas, but Col Wm Thomas,ex-sheriff,and ex Elk Lick miller and distiller, lived on the farm adjoining mine in Tate township to the n e. His last wife was Electra Collins Bragdon Thomas, dau of Jersey colony leaders,Rev John and Sarah Blackman Collins. An earlier wife was akin to Rev Wm Doane. His daughter was married to my grandmother's uncle,Wm Iden, farmer n e of Bethel on the old Sam Nelson farm. His father had a large family around Withamsville,Ohio-Union township-Clermont.
Paula, There is a Boothby site which may help you. _http://www.sersale.org/boothby.html_ (http://www.sersale.org/boothby.html) It has the estate sale and other papers for Josiah Boothby who died in Aug. 1834. James was one of the executors. Josiah had a brother named James, both sons of Josiah (died 1804). James, the executor, may have been either a brother or a son. I don't have a list of Josiah's children Deliverance (named in the estate papers) was Josiah's second wife. They were married in 1826. At least 1 of the four children named was Deliverance's from a previous marriage. You might also check the Boothby site on genforum.com. Good luck! -Judy In a message dated 4/16/2005 4:01:44 AM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I am new to the list and I am researching the name BOOTHBY. Hi there, I am new to the list and I am researching the name BOOTHBY. From what I have gathered there were two BOOTHBY'S in the 1810 Tax list...Josiah and James. My dilema begins here. My g.g.g.g.grandmother was born about 1810/11 in OH, her name was Rachel BOOTHBY. Josiah and James are the only BOOTHBY'S in the State of OH that could be her father. The tricky part is determining which man is her father. I am hoping that there are still some BOOTHBY researcher's on the list who can help me out. If not, hopefully some of you could give me a direction to look. I found posts from several years ago about early marriage records for Clermont and there is listings for both James and Josiah. Both were married in 1802 in Yankeetown and were Baptist if I read it right. Assuming they were Baptist, can anyone tell me the name of the Baptist Church in that area. And, what are the chances of recieving a copy of a baptismal record for that era? I have no experience working with Baptist Church records. I have looked at the 1820 Federal Census for each man and both men have 2 daughters age 10 and under and James has 2 daughters ages 10-16 where Josiah does not. In the 1830 Federal Census, James BOOTHBY is listed in Miami Twp., in Hamilton County, which is the same place that Rachel BOOTHBY Strong is living. Is this her uncle or her dad? Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Paula
