    1. [OHBUTLER] Jacob Rund/Round/Rowan/Rowen
    2. We have located Jacob Round and his family's origin ( 98% sure :o) ). SUMMARY JACKOB/JACOB RUND/ROUND/ROWND/ROWAN/ROWEN/ROWN --PIONEER FAMILY On 2 Jan 1738,Johann Jackob Rund was born, in Dackenheim,Pfalz-Bayern (Palatinate) Germany to Christopher Rund and Anna Catherina Rund. All from extracted Parish records : A family group. Evangelisch Reformed ( Protestant) in Dackenheim.Pfalz-Bayern(Palatinate). Dackenheim is near Ludwigshafen and Bad Durckheim. He married Anna Magdalana Staehler in Friedelsheim ( about 5 miles from Dackenheim) on 8 Nov 1763. In Dackenheim, a christening : Father Johann Jacob Rund, mother, Anna Magdalena Rund, 24 Oct 1764. We believe her parents were Andreas Staehler who married Maria Barbara Meyer in Dackenheim on 26 Oct 1728. Also, the christening accounts for the child born in Germany who died young, per the Shrader account of Jacob. We believe that Jacob and Anna emigrated to America in 1765/1766 and the birth of Elizabeth in Westmoreland Co. about 1766. As Carl told me, this is not proof positive ; but,the time is right, the place is right, a child born in Germany is right, and emigration is right. Also, look at Jacob's brother Johann DANIEL, mother, Anna CATHERINA, sister MARIA MARGARETHA, and Anna's father ANDREAS (Andrew). His daughter, Elizabeth Margarete Rowan/Round was born in Westmoreland Co., PA about 1766. She married Aaron Shrader Sr., son of William Schrader, in Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland Co. , PA , between 1783 and 1788. Their first son, Jacob, was born there in 1788. She died in Butler Co., Ohio in 1826. Jackob Rund/ Jacob Round first showed up as signing a petition in John Shield's home, about 6 miles from Hannastown, Westmoreland Co., PA in 1774. This petition was to Gov. Penn requesting troops to help defend settlement from Indian attacks. Hannastown on the Loyalhanna, was a settlement on the migration path westward to Ohio. It had a small fort about 6 miles outside of the settlement. The settlement was later destroyed by Indians. Jacob signed a second petition in Mt. Pleasant in 1784 on behalf of William Schrader ( father of Aaron Shrader Sr.). This petition turned out to be a very historic document ( as reported by " German Genealogical Digest") since it was used as a test of the then recently written " ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION". To quote from the " German Genealogical Digest" ... " These stalwart men faced peril and privatation on the western frontier of the young Republic The document was meaningful to hundreds of thousands of American families who decend from these brave men" The document was signed by Jackob Rund ( with umplatt over the u). The Americanized version being " JACOB ROUND " as the u is pronounced ou / or Round. Jacob Round Sr's daughter, Catherine was born 1765/67 in Westmoreland Co., PA and his son, Philip ( my 3rd great grandfather ) was born there in 1770. We do not know dates of Jacob Jr's or Daniel's birth; but, believe they were born between 1776 and 1789, based on 1820 census for Daniel and marriage date of Jacob Jr. Mary (Polly) Round was born 13 Jan 1779 in Westmoreland Co., PA as confirmed by decendents of the Isaac Watson family. Merium Round, as listed in Jacob's Indenture of 1811 is actually Mary Ann Round. Now comes the Snag !! Most of the decendents of Andrew Rowen believe that he was born in Philadelphia on 24 Mar 1775 !! NOTE: Philadelphia is in eastern PA., while, Westmoreland Co. was in western PA. on the frontier. I believe that Andrew's researchers may have deduced that from a Jacob Row or Rowand's marriage to a Prudence Maroe in 1772. My researchers, Carl Dunn, and I don't dispute the date of Andrew's birth; but, do not find any proof of the place. We think that logic points to the fact that Andrew was born in Westmoreland Co., PA. Why would Jacob have lived in Westmoreland Co. in 1766, have , at least 3 children there, sign petition in 1774, then go to Phila. and have Andrew there, go back to Westmoreland Co., have Mary in 1779 and sign another petition in 1784 ? I believe that Jacob and his unknown wife (Anna) had all of his children in Westmoreland Co., PA and that she died or was killed before he ever left PA to sign up for the Butler Co., Ohio " Symmes Purchase" in 1791. NOTE : During the Revolution and before, there was much fighting in Western PA between the settlers, Indians, and British. George Washington and his brother owned land there as well as Virginia. It could very well be, that Jacob Sr. was in the militia in Western PA. There were a lot of lives lost in and around Hannastown. The people who signed petitions, fought together and died together were Irish, Scots, Germans, Swiss, Dutch, English,French, etc. In other words, they fought together, lived together, and died together. They even married each other !! They were freedom loving Americans !! About 1790/91, Jacob Round Sr. took the Ohio River to Hamilton Co.,Ohio where he signed up for the "Symmes Purchase in Butler Co. along the Miami River in 1791. He and his family stayed at Ft. Washington, near Cincinnati at night, while farming their land during the day ( Nelson Rowen's letter of 1925). In early Butler Co., Jacob had two women living with him ( believe they were Mary Ann and Mary (Polly), his two unmarried daughters) Mary married Isaac Watson in Jan., 1805. Catherine had married Frederick Olendorf/Allenduff in nearby North Bend, Hamilton Co. in 1793. He was killed by Indians, after one son, Frederick Allenduff. Catherine remarried John Dickinson/Dickerson ( a Revolutionary War Vet ) in North Bend in 1796. Merium ( Mary Ann) married William Early in Butler Co. in 1818. Andrew married Elizabeth Drollinger abt. 1804 in Butler Co. Elizabeth stayed in Mt Pleasant, PA with her Aaron Shrader and family until abt. 1812, then they moved to Butler Co. where she died in 1826. In the meantime, Philip Round had joined the Army in Kentucky in 1790 thru 1794 as a scout/spy ! It is possible that Daniel may have also been in Kentucky. So far, we have nothing on Jacob Round Jr. until his marriage to Nancy Miller in 1811 in Butler Co., His inheritance of land in the Indenture of 1811 and his death and will under the name of Jacob Rowan in 1819 (probated 1821). His youngest son, Jacob was born after his death. Son, Daniel and daughter, Susan, grew up as Rowans. Jacob had surnames of Rowan,Rown, and Round. Daniel Round died in Fountain Co., Indiana as Daniel Rowan in 1831. The finalization of this will was handled by his nephew, Frederick Allenduff and wife, Nancy in 1840. A son of Daniel, Henry P. Rowan did not remember much of his childhood. He thought he was born abt. 1820 in Kentucky. We know that Daniel was in Dearborn Co., Indiana in 1820 census. He was in Butler Co., Ohio from 1811-1818 when he sold his land to the Shraders. It is possible that he was in Kentucky prior to 1811. My notes on each individual Round/etc. reflects what I thought I had at a particular point of time. This summary reflects where I am now on the earlier ancestors of ours ( Sept., 2006). Now, the question : Why so many surnames in our family ? Some wonder how names of Rowan, Rowen, Rown, Rownd come in to play. We know that Round is the Americanized spelling of Rund ( with the umplatt over the u). We also know that the Maryland Rownds had a different spelling due to Normans coming to England. Let us remember that the Germanic people as well as some French and Scandinavians had a brogue that could easily be picked up as Rown,Rowan,Rowen, Roun !! We can also add in misspellings, mis-reading, and lack of education by census takers, deed writers, wills, etc. I have found errors in Ancestry. com's censues: i.e. 1850 census for Philip Round's dau. in law as Charlotta Rowan and birth place of Philip and grandchildren. Charlotta's husband who died in 1841 was Andrew Round as shown on his tombstone. She and family were shown as Rowan. Children were shown as born in IA and so was Philip. His place of birth was PA not IA. Children were IN not IA. Hers was PA and shown as PA. This is just one of the errors I found in transcribing. The one document that explains it all i s Daniel Round's Probate in 1831. This was one legal sized handwritten page that showed Daniel as Daniel Round, Daniel Rowan, Daniel Rowen, Daniel Rownd, and Daniel Rown. It shows my 3rd great grandfather as Philip Rowen. The 1840 probate shows children as Rowan. By the way, it shows 5 children, 3 girls and 2 boys which fits in exactly with the 1820 census of Daniel Round in Dearborn Co., Indiana. Charles Round ( 7TH GENERATION ) PS Thanks to Lara,Judy,Terri,Debbie,Dick,Lynne,Mary,Martha,Harold,Coleen,Grace,Judith,Tim, Jim,Rita,Mary Beth,Grandfather Round,Gwendolyn,Evelyn,Clarence,Gordon and many others.
