I am searching for a Thomas Neilan who died sometime between the 1870 census and the 1880 census. In 1860 he lived in the County of Butler, Ross township,by 1870 the family is in Hamilton city. The other family members were buried at St. Mary's. Also, I plan on making a trip to Butler sometime this year. Can you find old death certificates from around that time frame there? Can you search old death certificates in any Ohio library or just the ones since 1907? Thank you, Audra
There is a long list of Neilan's in the St. Mary's Cemetery, but the Thomas Neilan that you are looking for is not there. The only one listed is a 5 year old child. He is not buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery either. I do not find a will or estate for Thomas. And he is not in our death books from 1867 - 1893. Death records from 1867 - 1908 are at the Butler County Records Center. Those are searchable and are 5 cents a page to photocopy. Death records after 1908 are held at the Health Department and they do not let you just search their records. If you have a name and date of death, you can purchase a death certificate for $20.00 There is a searchable index to the Ohio Death records from 1913 to 1947 at http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/ The Cincinnati Public Library in Cincinnati has these death records on microfilm at their main library branch in Cincinnati. If you plan to come to Hamilton, Butler County to do research, you should also plan to come to the Butler County Records Center as all of the original marriages (from 1803 to present), births 1867 - 1908, deaths 1867 - 1908, wills, estates etc are housed there. Hope that this helps.
