Hi Butler County Listers, First of all I wanted to say how helpful the Butler County Records Center and Archives was to me in my recent visit there researching my Lowry's of Butler County. My ancestor, John Lowry, first came to southern Ohio ca 1800 from Kentucky (probably Fayette or Woodford County). He was listed in Hamilton County but I believe his land was in what is now Warren County. He died there on October 28, 1801. At some point after his death, his wife, Elizabeth Fleming Lowry moved to Butler County where she left a will and died ca January 13, 1808. John and Elizabeth and their children lived near the borderline of Butler and Warren and many records are found in both counties. Their children were: Sarah (Sally) who, according to Sarah's sister Martha's will, was married to John McChen. I have found no other reference to a John McChen of this time and place and I wonder if his name could have actually been John McCain or something similar. I cannot find any further reference to John and Sarah McChen so I would love to hear if anyone had McChen's in this area and time. My best guess is that either the name was not really McChen or they moved away shortly after Sarah's mother Elizabeth died. The next child of John and Elizabeth Fleming Lowry was Fleming. He was born July 30, 1793 in KY, fought in the War of 1812 under Capt. John Robinson, and married Anny Robinson, daughter of the same Capt. John Robinson on Jan 23, 1816. He died November 2, 1818 and is buried in the Bigger Cemetery. His widow, Anny, later had three more husbands: William H. Clark, John Bigger, Jr., and Matthew Corry, Jr. The next child was my ancestor, Abraham Lowry. He was born ca 1793 in KY and married Rachel Hicks at the home of Capt. John Robinson on December 10, 1811 in Warren County. He also fought in the War of 1812. Abraham and Rachel lived in the area until the 1820's when they moved to Fountain Co., IN where Abraham died March 9, 1836. Daughter Elizabeth Lowry (Sep 30, 1798-Nov 11, 1848) married William Wakefield on Oct 29, 1816 in Butler County. This couple raised their family in Crosby Township, Hamilton Co., OH. The last known child of John and Elizabeth Fleming Lowry was Martha. She apparently never married but owned a house in the town of Monroe, Lemon Township, Butler County. She left a will and died there in October, 1823. There were two other daughters of John and Elizabeth who were mentioned (not by name) in their father John's will but not their mother's. I thus assume they died between 1801 and 1808. Finally, according to John Lowry's will he had a son named John Lowry (Jr.). This John Lowry (The Younger) was not mentioned in his wife Elizabeth's will, however. I believe this was because he was from a previous marriage of John's. Details are very scarce but in the Records Center and Archives in Hamilton I found that administration of the estate of John Lowery, the younger, was given to Fleming Lowry in 1814. Unfortunately, there were no other details. I infer from this, however, that this John Lowery (Lowry) was the son of the John Lowry that I mentioned above because of who the administration was given to: Fleming Lowry (who would probably be his half brother). I have several leads (but no proof yet) who this John Lowry the younger may have married and what some of the names of his children were. I would love to hear from anyone at all who has information on John Lowry of Butler County who died 1814. I have much information to share with anyone with Lowry connections in Butler County. Let's work together!
