Good evning all, As I sit here...going over my GRIMES research notes, for the umptiumph time...I thought that I would take a moment to post ...just to see if there's anyone else researching...GRIMES. Who knows....maybe I'll find one of my husband's cousins. *S* My research time frame would be before 1790 thru to current. Ethnicity has long been assumed as PA "Dutch" [Deutsch]...but I had several Welsh, Irish, Scots and even English kinfolk very early there in PA...so any ethnicity is possible.*S* Most of my hunting has been in Montgomery Co., and Darke Co., but there were several lines descending from this family. From what I can tell...they have spread out...quite well to the neighboring counties and even...into SE Indiana. Otherwise why name a location...GRIMES Grove, if there weren't any GRIMES there??? Since that county shares a boundary with more than just one OH County...I'm thinking this is possible for our line of GRIMES. *S* This spreading out started sometime in the 1820's...and my husband's line, James GRIMES [Sr] m. Edith WILLIAMSON's son, James GRIMES m. 1847, Elizabeth McGINNIS. This duo married in Darke Co. and by the 1850 Census...both father James and son James were in Darke Co. James Sr...b. 1785 PA [per 1850 Census, d. Darke Co. in 1853. I'm sorry, but I don't have dates for Edith, but I think she didn't live much longer than her husband. The specific GRIMES that I'm hunting were in PA as of 1785, as that's the dob/location per the 1850 Census details out as the of our James GRIMES who arrived in 1805 to Montgomery Co. OH ...with his widow'd mother [Mary] and five sisters. Mary [BROWN or BRAUN] GRIMES, was the widow of William GRIMES. They had at least seven children. So far I have seven names. William GRIMES is known to have had a brother named John...who migrated to OH just ahead of widowed Mary and her brood. At this time...I haven't been able to identify William's or Mary's families any further. They're my major brickwalls. :o( The only one of their children known to not have made the full migration from PA > VA > OH.....was Samuel GRIMES. There is a marriage record for a Samuel m. 1809 Betsy STEEHLE in Rockbridge Co., VA. Until I can verify who that Samuel was ...I have to list very boldly...."???"....in my notes. We do not yet know if that Samuel is ours...or not... BUT... Samuel GRIMES's 1812 Will was probated in Rockbridge Co. VA, and his mother Mary received an annual stipend for the rest of her life. This is why I think that Samuel may be the same one. The rest of William and Mary's children married in Montgomery Co. OH...between 1806-1818: James GRIMES [Sr.] m. abt 1806, Edith WILLIAMSON, d/o Hugh WILLIAMSON ......[long thought to have m. 1806-1817] ......[I have a full list of their children *S* ] Anna m. David McCONNAUGHEY [McCONNAIGHEY, McCONNACHEW] "Polly" [Mary] m. 1806, Robert C. CRAWFORD Betsy [Elizabeth] m. 1810, Edward NEWCOM, "Patsy" [Martha] m. abt 1806, William FULTON Peggy [Margaret?] `m. John FULTON The only known earlier arrival to MtgCo.OH was John GRIMES, the brother of Mary's late husband...William GRIMES. Uncle John's wife's name...is presumed as Elizabeth... due to some 1810 land records there. John also had a son...named, John, but I'm still trying to identify the rest of his kids. I do not know precisely when uncle John [Sr] arrived in OH. I'm trying to locate this family 'anywhere' in PA...pre-1805. I have found an unidentified Thomas.....but so far...ZIPPAROO ....for the rest of the crowd that I detailed above. :o( Published historicals, 1880 & 1890, have listed Samuel, Mary's son, as her husband. THIS IS DEFINITELY INCORRECT. Mary's late husband's name was William and I believe that his father's name was either James or Samuel, based on the over-use of these two names. However...I'm still digging... My best clue to this Samuel NOT being Mary's late husband... was because when she arrived in Montgomery Co. OH in 1805 ...she was a widow. Logic tells me that a dead person.... can't write out a Will some seven years after burial. Anyway this incorrect assumption by descendants was due to Samuel's Will dated 1812, in Rockbridge Co. VA. Designated Executor "uncle John" [GRIMES], providing Mary with an annual stipend. In Mary's own 1828 Will she bequeathed her the balance of her annual stipend to his six [6] siblings. With the exception of Samuel's designation of...'uncle John' ...neither bothered to write down in either Will...the actual relationship between them. So it was left to speculation. :o( Later descendants...have now assumed...a spousal relationship. Like most assumptions...it has gained credence as the years passed, and many descendants are still set on this assumption ......because their parents wouldn't lie. No. They wouldn't. At least not intentionally. :o( There were quite a few GRIMES in OH in the earliest years... but so far, I have not found any connection between any of these in other areas. So I'm looking for clues.
