    3. As I was scanning in an 1836 Oxford Twp. map I noticed, in Section 36, a notation which says "Ancient Work" about 1/4 mile east of where Woodruff Rd. now runs on a bend in Four Mile Creek. Being curious, I thought I would ask on the list about this. Is this an Indian mound or burial site? P.S. We will be making all of McBride's 1836 Butler Co. Township maps available online in the next couple of weeks. -- Dennis Kowallek Hanover Twp., Butler Co. kowallek@iglou.com ******************

    3. Dennis, From What I've read, Butler County had the 2nd largest number of Indian/ ancient Works of any county in Ohio outside of Ross County. The 1836 maps show some of the working. JP Maclean 1848-1859 worked in the area and published a book in 1887 describing his results the books title begins with The Mound Builders... This book has disappeared from the Middletown Library. Some of Butler County's ancient works are on the Historic registry as found online- however you have to guess where the sites are and whether or not they are in existance today. Some of the Butler County "Historic sites" on the registry are no longer standing including an Indian Mound in Liberty Township and a Hughes House in Liberty Township. I'm glad you have access to the 1836 map and are putting the images online.
