Carolyn, I just looked at my file at home and found a little information under Salvation Army. On April 4, 1987 The Middletown Journal ran a supplement about the Salvation Army and their 100 years in Middletown. On page 9 is six paragraphs under the heading "Garfield St. Mission was once a shelter." On the next page there is a photograph of "Garfield Mission day nursey." The mission building must have been at 1404 Garfield. Apparently this was a church started by the Middletown council of Churches and taken over in 1944 by the Salvation Army. At 1406 Garfield was The Haven, which was a shelter for homeless mothers and children. In 1949 they opened a nursery for children 2 to 6 years old. Some time in the early 1950s the whole thing must have closed.
