Hello, Since Charles Dill was my husband's great grandfather and Charles' daughter, Lulu Dill Wallen was my husband's grandmother, and since I've been working on these Hamilton>Butler families off and on for years, here's my two cents! From the census data, 1870 Charles - age 10 - first listed in a census . with Ann 58, and Margaret 33- Crosby Twp. Hamilton Co 1880 Charles - age 20 - listed with Ann 68, Mathew 41, Mary 35, in Crosby Twp. Hamilton Co. 1893 Charles E. Dill married Jennie Frazee 10 July in Hamilton County OH. 1900 Charles E. b. July 1861, (married 7 yrs.) listed with Jennie B. Nov. 1874, Lula A. July 1894, Cecelia Jan 1896, Chelce Feb. 1898, LeRoy April 1900 in Harrison Twp. Hamilton Co. OH 1903 Charles and Jennie's son Karl born in Indiana (Harrison is pretty much on the IN line) 1910 Charles is deceased Jennie and their 5 children are in Hamilton, Butler Co. OH Although there is no 1890 census, the 12 1/2 yr. "leap of faith" claiming Charles of the 1880 Hamilton Co. Census with Ann as the same Charles who married Jennie Frazee (d/o Noah, grand d/o Jonas) in Hamilton Co. was not done lightly. After looking at all the other Dill families in Hamilton and the surrounding counties, there were NO other Charles Dills who were of the same age who could have married Jennie Frazee in 1893. It is, however possible that an unattached, Dill male named Charles wandered into the county prior to the marriage. Although listed in the census as Ann's son, evidence suggests he did not belong to Ann and John Dill but was a grandson instead. Parents for Charles - who was conceived in Oct 1860 NOT John Dill - he was dead or gone by 1855 NOT Godfrey Morgan - Ann married him and divorced him in 1858/59 NOT Likely Ann Dill - no husband in 1860 when Ann was 48.. Life was hard on a very small piece of land and 48 was old for women in 1860. Personally, I find it hard to believe that a widowed, divorced, woman of 48 in 1860 would have gotten pregnant out of marriage - but it's possible. However, in a lengthy Civil War Pension application (made on her son, Elias) Ann listed all of her children and their conditions at the time explaining why they were unable to support her financially. NO mention was made of Charles. NOT Elias F. Dill - stated in Civil War pension application by Ann - he had no wife or children NOT Likely Uriah Dill He and 1st wife Rebecca had only one child - Rebecca stated in the 1900 census that she had only had one child with 0 living. In the 1880 she is listed with 19 yr. old son, Nathaniel Dill. However, something caused the marriage to end in divorce. Mathew (listed in the 1860) age 21, with Anna 47, Margaret 23, Elias 17, and Samuel Testine/Pestine/Destine 6, could have married and fathered Charles in the months after the census or could have fathered Charles without being married between the census and Oct. 1860. Margaret (listed with her mother and brothers in the 1860) could have been Charles' mother - some time between 1860 and 1870, Margaret married Conover and became a widow by 1870. Ahh, your notes are very good, Gale. However, you might want to make one correction for Charles and Jennie's son, Karl, who was born in LA instead of IN. I found an old note from Sally Chrisman who surmised that Charles was the son of Margaret Dill. Gale, if push comes to shove, could we postpone our trip until the end of July or beginning of August? I need to try to get some temporary job assignments pretty soon, and try to work until the end of June. The first weekend in July is our 3-day District Convention of Jehovah's Witnesses in Dayton, OH, so that will cost me for a hotel stay, meals, gasoline, etc. August would also give me more time to get all my genealogy records organized. I am working on these records all of today and tomorrow, Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and all day Friday. Let me know if this would work for you By the way, whenever we go to Hamilton, OH, perhaps we should stop and meet Sally Chrisman and her husband in Butler County. Apparently they still have a lot of information and notes on our Dill family that she has not given us. What do you think? Take care, Barbara EdwardWallen <edwall@ccaonline.com> wrote: Hello, Since Charles Dill was my husband's great grandfather and Charles' daughter, Lulu Dill Wallen was my husband's grandmother, and since I've been working on these Hamilton>Butler families off and on for years, here's my two cents!
