When I type in Elk Creek Cemetery it does not list Astoria as a variant and gives different lat/lon coordinates which appear to be about a mile apart. Hmmmm...being that the "Venice Cemetery" is at Ross, Butler County, (formerly known as Venice, Butler County, Ohio), and has never been part of the Fairfield Township area, Dennis is probably more correct than we would like, when it comes to the data that is in that specific data-base. It also reminds me that Hazel Stroup and her legion of Boy Scouts did an admirable job, but they didn't always get their information correct, so it still pays to get the facts from the original source, such as the cemetery records, tombstones, etc. I guess we will never completely get away from having to research hard data, and that is ok. It is what makes our avocation so enjoyable, even if we do run into brick walls, and why we are so willing to help each other. Keep on searching. The truth will eventually come out. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis Kowallek" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 06, 2005 11:18 AM Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Richards-Gilbert Cemetery == Fairfield Trustees Cemetery? > On Wed, 06 Apr 2005 10:33:48 -0400, [email protected] wrote: > > > I typed "Fairfield Trustees Cemetery" into the USGS-GNIS and got these variant names... > > > > > >Variant Name(s)Gilbert-Richards Cemetery > >Mill Road Cemetery > >Venice Cemetery > > That's interesting. Astoria was actually the berg that this cemetery is in also known as Jacktown but it is listed as Pleasant Hill Cemetery on Elk Creek Road. There is an Elk Creek Cemetery in Trenton Ohio and The Elk Creek Cemetery on State Route 122 in Madison Township Deb Morrison ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 06, 2005 12:18 PM Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Richards-Gilbert Cemetery == Fairfield Trustees Cemetery? > I think there are two Elk Creek Cemeteries. > > -----Original Message----- > From: Dennis Kowallek <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Sent: Wed, 06 Apr 2005 11:18:33 -0400 > Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Richards-Gilbert Cemetery == Fairfield Trustees Cemetery? > > > On Wed, 06 Apr 2005 10:33:48 -0400, [email protected] wrote: > > > I typed "Fairfield Trustees Cemetery" into the USGS-GNIS and got these variant > names... > > > > > >Variant Name(s)Gilbert-Richards Cemetery > >Mill Road Cemetery > >Venice Cemetery > > That's interesting. who actually knows what this usgs-gnis is? this is the first time i have encountered it. it reminds me of another web-based repository where the source of the data is not that clear... I have seen the Gilbert-Richards cemetery referenced as the Venice cemetery before, but also realized there is an actual venice cemetery in Ross, Ohio. The Mill Road Cemetery variant was the first time I have encountered that name, as well as the "Fairfield Trustees Cemetery" (where did that one come from?) can anyone enumerate or add any other info? -----Original Message----- From: Dennis Kowallek <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, 06 Apr 2005 11:18:33 -0400 Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Richards-Gilbert Cemetery == Fairfield Trustees Cemetery?
