    2. Thanks, Mary. I think that may have been true. But in looking closer at my George line, the second born son was named after his father, not his mother's father. It would be helpful if they stuck to the formula, but of course then there would be so many people with the same names in the extended family who could keep them all straight??? The practice of using the mother and/or grandmother's maiden names for a son or grandson's middle name was helpful, too. Even when the name was spelled phonetically, like Hanley for Handley.
