    1. Re: [OHBUTLER] Scottis customs
    2. I think this went beyond Scottish naming customs. My GGG-grandfather and mother seem to have used the same system after marrying in 1797, and he was English and she was English or Irish. But I'd never thought of this as a way to figure out what my unknown GGGG- grandparents's first names were. Thanks for the clue! So now I'm looking for Fannie and Joshua GEORGE from VA where their son Reuben was born in 1776. 3. Hi Nancy, Here is a suggestion. Your GGG-mother could have been Scotts-Irish, as many of mine are. Thus she would have very likely had the custom handed down. The pattern generally went as follows: * The first son was named after the father’s father. * The second son after the mother’s father. * The third son after the father. * The first daughter after the mother’s mother. * The second daughter after the father’s mother. * The third daughter after the mother. Sometimes when a child died, the next child of that gender born into the family was given the same name as the deceased child. Occasionally two or more living children in the family were given the same given name. When they were christened, children were usually given one or two given names. This can be found at FamilySearch.org, Research Helps, Scotland, Scotland Research Outline.

    3. I believe this is also a German custom. Germans also gave two names along with the surname: the first was the saint's name and the second one the given name. So Johannes Michael Koch was Michael Koch.
