    3. Just note here to my fellow list members. The Scott's generally used one of two naming patterns. You should be cautious as to which one was used in your family. They also did not always adhere to the convention depending upon the time period of Scottish history you are researching. In my own family the first son was named after his maternal grandfather. The first daughter was after the paternal grandmother. The second son was after the paternal grandfather. The third son was after the father and the second daughter after the maternal grandmother. There is an excellent work by Hamilton Edwards that gives details of Scottish naming patterns in his book In Search of Scottish Ancestry. German patterns used the baptismal 1st. name which is never used to address the person within the community. You can find these on their Taufschein or the Fraktur. Also be aware that the second name or what we commonly refer to has first name was often that of the god parents. The God parent was very often not related to the child in the German community. They were a person in the community generally of some means or wealth. This was commonly done as an honor to insure that the child would have a guardian to look after then if the parents died. Parents therefore commonly selected people outside the family but within the congregation who had the means to provide for the child should the parents die. > 1st son after the father's father > 2nd son after the mother's father > 3rd son after the father > 4th son after the father's (or mother's if the father doesn't have one) > eldest brother > 5th son after the mother's eldest brother > > 1st daughter after the father's mother > 2nd daughter after the mother's mother > 3rd daughter after the mother > 4th daughter after the father's eldest sister > 5th daughter after the mother's eldest sister > Richard Martin
