    2. Vivian KK Moon
    3. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Vivian Moon (513) 705-0486 DEDICATION SET FOR FLAG POLE AND PHASE 1 OF MIDDLETOWN CEMETERY RESTORATION MIDDLETOWN – A dedication ceremony is set for Saturday, May 28, at Noon at the Middletown Cemetery, formally known as the Pioneer Cemetery, on First Avenue. City and community leaders, including Mayor Noah Powers, will recognize the new flagpole and the completion of Phase 1 of the cemetery restoration. Anyone with an ancestor in the cemetery and the general public are encouraged to attend. The cemetery, established in 1827, contains some of the city’s earliest leaders, for whom many city streets are name. Burials at the site actually occurred as early as 1818. With more than 7,000 burials, the cemetery contains early residents from all walks of life and races. The Middletown Cemetery Committee has been working since 2003 to improve the cemetery. Phase 1 included repairing dozens of tombstones, extensive landscaping, enhancing security and fencing, and establishment of utilities. The VFW, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans chapters in Middletown donated the flagpole and flag. In addition, Phase 1 included making photographic record of the tombstones in the Middletown Cemetery and transcribing original cemetery records for the Internet. DEDICATION SET FOR FLAG POLE AND PHASE 1 OF MIDDLETOWN CEMETERY RESTORATION Page 2 Phase 1 was completed with a grant from the Middletown Community Foundation and material and labor donations from: Dodd’s Monuments, Armbruster’s Garden Center, Diver’s Garden and Pet Supplies, Bern’s Nursery, Woodside Cemetery, Denny Lumber Company, Ted's Rental, Edwin F. and Marjorie Root Anderson, Steve Posie and many other individuals. “Our city’s forefathers would be proud of the community spirit demonstrated to complete Phase 1 of the cemetery’s restoration,” said Vivian Moon, chair of the Middletown Cemetery Committee. “Recent vandalism of the cemetery only served to strengthen our resolve and gain more support for the restoration.” Phase 2 of the restoration includes restoration of the 1870 burial vault at the cemetery and its grounds and more tombstone repair and landscaping. The Middletown Cemetery Committee is comprised of area residents Sam Ashworth, Corbett Cox, Caroline Huppi, Vivian Combs Moon, Deb Morrison and Mitchell Ballard. Donations for Phase 2 can be made in care of the Middletown Historical Society/Middletown Cemetery Fund, P.O Box 312, Middletown 45042.

    3. Hi, I stumbled across this article I thought you all might like to see. It's from the Cincinnati Enquirer in Sept. 2002. http://www.cincinnati.com/local/westchester/G12_09062002_News_wchistory.ART_Late.html The URL is sort of long so you might have to copy and paste it in two sections. It looks like the .html is going to drop to another line. And those are underlines_ between the words, not dashes or just spaces. Norma

    2. Sorry for not responding. I am actually working on scanning the ENTIRE book for posting on a website that another woman has built. She is the same one who posted the index for the book that I built. I have over 300 of the 800 pages scanned and it will probably take another month to get it all done. I'm hoping that Nancy can get what has been scanned posted as soon as possible. My George ancestors - so far as I know - lived on South Dwyer, just north of George Road. I could be wrong, or maybe the road was named for them but they didn't actually live on that road??? The existence of two Section 9's have contributed to my confusion. Newspaper articles locate the scene of the fire as "1.5 mi. 3. I have looked at the 1930 Butler County Atlas from the library and photographed the Liberty Township map. The 1930 Map shows Shelby? Palmer owing land in the SE Quarter of Section 9. The west 1/2 of the SW Quarter is owned by Palmer and the east half by M Ellington?/ or perhaps M Pottington. This section 9 is in R3N and T2E. The access to this location is East of Cincinnati Dayton Road and North of Millikin road before Butler-Warren Road The Middletown Library and Hamilton Library have these maps.. I have attempted to photograph the maps on the fly and some of them turn out well/ adequately. I have a variety of images of Liberty Township from 1836 through 1930. 3. When I scanned that map, I had to do it in two sections because of the size. (1/4 a newspaper sheet) The black line down the middle denotes the sections. If anyone wants to right click on each section of the map, you can save it to your own computer and print out each section as an 8x10. It probably will print better than it shows on the screen. 3. That's the map I put up to show the townships and locations. It's from an old newspaper the the Hamilton Journal-News published in 1975 for the 100 years of Butler Co. To give it more resolution, it makes it too big. In that section of the paper, it has each township on a page by itself, and has the names of the property owners. It's on film at the LDS Family History Centers. 3. Monty, If you haven't gotten enough help already, the BCEO map shows two section 9s in Liberty Twp. Those are the red numbers that show on the map. Milliken Road is the southern boundary for both sections so that would have been the property line for your grandfather's property. A section is (usually) 1 mile square and it appears both of these are about that size. The 160 acre quarter section is then 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile; the property would then have extended 1/2 mile north of Milliken Road. The east-west position is a little trickier. There is an 1875 map I accessed through the Butler County site on OHGenweb (http://members.tripod.com/~nanny_4/ButlerCounty.html) that appears to indicate the western section 9 is in Range 2 east and the eastern section 9 is Range 3 east. That would seem to place your grandfather's property in the eastern of these two sections but I am not certain of that. If so, the property would currently be split by I-75 (if it was the SW quarter) or abut the Warren County line (the SE quarter). Hope this helps.
