Thank-you for the information. I will update the name as I put things online. It's too bad the inventories of the cemeteries in Butler County have not been checked since the 1960's. Linda, Thank you for the information on the 1860 and 1870 census. Is there anyway to check the marriage records on line so that I could see if Nicholas and Anna Maria were married over here. In the 1860 Census for Butler County Ohio is the family of Nicholas Hassan age 37 born in Germany, wife Mary Hassen, age 34 born in Germany, daughter Mary age 10 born in Ohio, son Michael age 7, son George age 5, daughter Louisa age 4, daughter Lana age 2. All children born in Ohio In the 1870 Census for Butler County is the family of Nicholas Hessen age 47 born in Germany, no wife listed, daughter Mary age 20, son Michael age 17, son George age 15, daughter Louisa age 13, daughter Lana age 11 and son Frank age 9. No wife is included, so she probably died by 1870 although I did check the death records and she is not listed (nothing unusual for the early death records.) Hope that this helps. I came across a list of Butler County soldiers who died in the Iraq war, and have added it to the Butler Co site. Just a note - the web page for that Elk Creek Cemetery _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohbutler/cem/elkcreek.htm_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohbutler/cem/elkcreek.htm) actually has links from the names GARRISON and GIRCHE that click down to this correction: "CORRECTION: Don Garrison, dongarr@oz-online.net, wrote (18 Jul 2005) In reference to the Elk Creek cemetery in Madison Township, Butler Co. under the surname of GARRISON, I would like to offer a correction if I may. Hi, does this site cover the years 1824-1828. I am trying to find out what happen to my 3rd great grandfather's family and I assume they died in the epidemics around Cincinnati.. Here is the info I have on him. (I don't have his parents names, thus my genealogy identy problem.) OBITUARY, March 28, 1890, THE GREENSBURG STANDARD NEWSPAPER, Greensburg, Decatur Co., Indiana SAMUEL BARKER WILKINSON Samuel Barker Wilkinson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, June 6th, 1821, of English parentage. Left as an "orphan" at the age of six, he was brought up by John Baxter, of Warren County. He was married to Prescilla Johnson, on September 25th 1845. They moved to Jennings County, Indiana in 1854, but returned to Ox ford, Ohio in 1858, where they resided until 1875, when they came to the farm near Westport, Ind., which was home until the time of his death, March 21,1890. He was stricken with paralysis over two years ago, and has suffered much in that time. A second stroke one week before his death left him speechless and unable to take food. Funeral services were held at Union Presbyterian Church on March 22nd conducted by Rev. F. M. Westhafer, after which his body was laid to rest in the cemetery at that place. His wife and son have the sympathy of a large acquaintance of friends of many years. > [Original Message] > From: <genewill@sbcglobal.net> > To: <OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 8/7/2005 8:59:12 PM > Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Conditions in 1800's > > During that time, there was a cholora epidemic that cost a lot of local > lives. During that time, there was a cholora epidemic that cost a lot of local lives. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to rootsweb. One of our heroes is putting on a lot of information from the MEMOIRS OF THE MIAMI VALLEY, and there are a lot of excerpts from many other sources, such as the Butler County web site, that different people have contributed a lot of time to helping the rest of us discover how exciting our history was in these parts. Even an old codger like me is learning a lot, despite growing up here. Rootsweb doesn't even cost anything. There is specific information concerning West Middletown, Jacksonburg, Poasttown, and the whole of Madison Township as to their history and much information about specific people. Lane Library, in Hamilton, and the library in Oxford also do a lot of research that ends up helping us. You also might think about joining one of the two genealogy groups in Butler County. They both are able to help with information, and it just doesn't cost that much to be a member, even if you don't live around here. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mr & Mrs Don Garrison" <dongarr@oz-online.net> To: <OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 07, 2005 5:51 PM Subject: [OHBUTLER-L] Conditions in 1800's > Subscribers: > Is there anyone who would have any information of the conditions in Butler > Co. in 1830-1835?. The Westfield New Jesery history website has been of great value in finding out about people buried in Butler County Cemeteries. Westfield is a part of Essex County and referenced often in the Butler County Cyclopedia 1882 that http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohbutler/cyc/ has online. The Westfield site may be of value to those researching early Butler County residents. http://www.westfieldnjhistory.com The Westfield Presbyterian Church marriage records etc online have been helpful as well. http://www.westfieldnjhistory.com/files/lr12.htm I have found references for the Beach family buried in Amanda Cemetery, Scudder family buried in the Liberty Township Springhill cemetery and Clawson cemeteries. I was surprised and delighted to find so much material online about people in Butler County. I plan to send a donation to support their efforts at putting material online. Hope this helps somebody as much as it has helped me. Caroline Huppi
