    3. Thank you all for the information. And a special thanks to Gary King, of Batavia, Illinois, who has been kind enough to post the Memoirs online; I think we all realize what a huge task that has been. Sandi, I did receive the 1860 census direct to my inbox from Ancestry without a problem. Do you know the religion of your Gartner/Gardners??? -- mine were Catholic. There are apparently several discrepancies -- the spelling of Mary's maiden name, the date of Mary's immigration, and the place of John Jacob's birth being among them -- the census says he was born in Ohio, the Memoirs place his birth in Newport, KY. My great-grandmother was Nicholas and Mary's daughter, Catherine, who in the census appears as Kate. Catherine was born in Butler County. The Memoirs were published in 1919. The following passage seems to indicate that both Mary and Nicholas passed away prior to that book's publication... "...In the evening of life they retired from all active pursuits and took up their residence at Hamilton, where both passed away, honored and esteemed by those who knew them and recognized their many excellent traits of character." Again, thanks for your help; I appreciate y'all helping me fill in the details a good deal more.

    3. Could someone on the list with access to the 1850 and/or the 1860 census look up the following names??? Nicholas Gardner Mary Viellieber Gardner [a family member said Mary's maiden name might possibly be Freilieber and of course there could be a multitude of spelling variations of that] Mary is my great-great grandmother. Below is the info I have: Memoirs of the Miami Valley Volume lll "Of the resourceful agriculturists who have fashioned their careers within the boundaries of Hanover township, one who has made a success of his life and is accounted one of the substantial citizens of his part of Butler county, is John J. Gardner. Mr. Gardner is a native of Newport, Ky., born December 2, 1855, a son of Nicholas and Mary (Viellieber) Gardner, both of whom were born in Germany. Coming to the United States separately, before marriage, the parents met and were united in marriage in Newport, Ky., and after residing there several years came to Ohio and settled first near Hamilton. Later they resided near Darrtown, subsequently moving to Hanover township, and eventually settled permanently on the farm a part of which is occupied by their son." Thanks. Any info you can provide will be most appreciated.

    3. If you can find out if Hanson eventually had a son, Ray or Raymond, late 1920's/early 1930's, then I probably know the family. The timeline is about right, although I may have mistakenly taken them for Kentucky heritage.
