    3. Carolyn, I just looked at my file at home and found a little information under Salvation Army. On April 4, 1987 The Middletown Journal ran a supplement about the Salvation Army and their 100 years in Middletown. On page 9 is six paragraphs under the heading "Garfield St. Mission was once a shelter." On the next page there is a photograph of "Garfield Mission day nursey." The mission building must have been at 1404 Garfield. Apparently this was a church started by the Middletown council of Churches and taken over in 1944 by the Salvation Army. At 1406 Garfield was The Haven, which was a shelter for homeless mothers and children. In 1949 they opened a nursery for children 2 to 6 years old. Some time in the early 1950s the whole thing must have closed. 3. Carolyn, I have heard of the Garfield Mission, but know little about it. I have an index of George Crout's articles that starts in with articles written in August of 1959. His indexing is not right good especially for trying to find some specific item. I do not see anything about the Garfield Mission. I am fairly certain that I have seen something. If I have some time, I will look at his files.
