Judy, Our Middletown Library doesn't have the Hamilton papers on film. I wish they did. I seldom get to Hamilton. Maybe someone in Hamilton could look up the obits for you. No, it's the person's age at their death. In a message dated 11/4/2005 9:12:25 AM Central Standard Time, ritaelkins@commspeed.net writes: I wondered: Did it pertain to how long it took before burial? How long they were on their deathbed?
I wondered: Did it pertain to how long it took before burial? How long they were on their deathbed?
Thank you, Diane; valuable information. Out of curiosity, do you know what the time notations (2 das, 3 wks) next to death dates meant? Rita
St. Stephen's Cemetery and St Mary's Cemetery are the only Catholic cemeteries located in the City of Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio. St. Mary's is located in south Hamilton (Lindenwald) on Pleasant Avenue and is the newer of the two. St. Stephen Cemetery is located on Greenwood Avenue in Hamilton, Ohio. The "old" section is on the south side of Greenwood Avenue bordered on three sides by Greenwood Cemetery. Land for the newer section of St. Stephen Cemetery was purchased April 26, 1873. At that time it was decided to sell only individual graves in the old cemetery. Note: The old St. Mary, St. Stephen, and St. Veronica parishes merged to form St. Julie Billiart parish in 1989. St. Julie Billiart, which is located in the old St. Stephen Church, is supposed to have records on hand for the original three parishes. Below is the contact info for St. Julie Billiart... [ It is my understanding that a monetary donation is suggested for genealogical lookups of Catholic records.] St Julie Billiart Parish (513) 863-1040 224 Dayton St Hamilton, OH 45011 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following are taken from the St. Stephen's Cemetery [Old] (1850 - 1994) listings published by the Southwest Butler County Genealogical Society: Gfroerer, Aug. Matilde Ruhe married Charles Gfroerer and lived in Monroe OH. Being Catholic, they were married at the Church of the Seven Dolors in Monroe and my grandmother, Helen Rose Gfroerer, was born in 1899. They moved to Lindenwald where my grandfather was a tile cutter and did carpenter work. The only other date I have is that Charles Gfroerer died in 1967. > I was told a few years ago that the St. Stephen's cemetery records > were destroyed by fire/water sometime after 1867. I wrote it after noting that Greenwood Cemetery was next to St. Stephen's and that St. Stephens has the mausoleum the Gfroerers were buried in, or in the Catholic cemetery off Pleasant Ave. Maybe this address could help you find Elias Ruhl. Thanks for any info you find for me.
For Karen: My G-Grandmother was Matilda Ruhe and she was buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery. Her parents were German but I think she was born in Erlanger KY. Just thought maybe you should try finding your Elias under Ruhe vs. Ruhl. Like you, I have done little research of my ancestors. Let me know if you find a connection please! Rita
Good Morning, I just discovered the Ohio Historical Society has now added 7 years to their online Death Certificate indexes here: http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/ Previously, it only went through 1937. Now, it's up to 1944. They have improved the search engine too. Enjoy! Norma
My Butler County connection is ELIAS RUHL, b. 1812, in HERBSTEIN Germany. He emigrated in 1847 and married Sarah Meininger/Neininger in 1849; Old St. Stephens Church. He resided in Seven Mile, OH for a time. WIEGAND is a very common name in the Herbstein Church registers and I will look a my excel spreadsheets to see if I can find him. He may have been born in the US, as some of these townspeople/relatives came to Cincinnati/Louisville/Hamilton/Milhousen, IN, and beyond before 1852. I am at a brick wall with my ELIAS RUHL. I know he was a civil war veteran and died ca. December 31, 1867. My suspicion is he is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery or Old St. Stephen's portion of the Cemetery in an area devoid of headstones. His brother, Johannes Ruhl, b. 1823, has a very nice headstone in German. Another brother, Daniel, died in 1851. I have tried to find a newspaper obituary for this time frame in Hamilton and in the German papers in Cincinnati, without any luck. I haven't been very active with my genealogy hobby, but lately I have been pulled to resume my quest. I have been starting other lines. If you have a connection to HERBSTEIN and would like me to look for surnames and individuals, I am very willing to share my work. My microfilm transcriptions are not complete yet, but I have finished the marriage records of 1817-1875. Respectfully, Karen Gibson-Ruhl
Hi Karen, Thank you for doing a lookup for my August Otto Weigand/Wiegand on the church records. I have no idea where in Germany he came from. When my Mom and I were in Rudesheim a salesperson saw her name and said, that there were a lot of Wiegand's in that area. Take care, Judy Minihan
Norma, Sometime when you get to the Hamilton, Ohio Library or Butler County Library would you please check to see if you can find a obit on August Otto Wiegand, b. 1852 and d. 1916. Also, his wife, Catherine Meyer b. 1860 d. 1935. Both are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery. I have taken pictures of the whole family in Greenwood that I knew about. Catherine's name may be spelled with a K and the last name could also be Maier. I can get back no further than these two people. I think they both were born and married in Germany so I would like to have some more specifics. Thank you so much. I usually get back to Ohio once a year but I haven't been there this year and I don't think I am going to get there soon. So your help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Take care, Judy Minihan Vancouver, WA

Kathleen The WWl Draft registration card has a Charles Plinay Robeson born May 28, 1880 living on R 5 in Butler County Ohio with his wife Nan B Robeson. The card lists his occupation as telegraph operator. It says that he had gray eyes and brown hair and that he lost his left arm. I have an old business card that was in my grandfather's belongings. It's for a Phil Rothenbush, Capt. Co. I, 35th O.V.I. Note at the top reads: Lincoln's 1st Call, 3rd Ohio. Bottom reads: Hamilton Ohio. There is a photo of him on the card. If the website administrator would like to have a scan of this for the site, I'll do that, but if there is also a family member that would like this card, I'd be happy to mail it after scanning.
