    1. Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Butler Co Bios
    2. Thanks, Todd. I'll add a link to something Larry Stevens compiled about the 39th OVI to the resources page on the site. I think you could be right about people coming to Kansas after the Civil War, but in my Butler Co families, more people moved to Kansas in the 1840s and '50s. (Except for me, who moved here in 1971....) Kansas became a state in 1861 from the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Free State debate inspired many Butler Countians to pour into Kansas to make a political statement and vote their consciences. Did the vets of the Civil War get land in the west like the vets of the Revolutionary War and of the War of 1812 did? There were health problems in Ohio - typhoid fever for one - that may have encouraged people to move west. I've recently been reading about the effect TB had on several people in southwest Missouri (right across the Missouri River from Kansas). Some moved to Montana and others moved to Colorado to recover, but neither extended their lives much, apparently. Another branch of the family moved to Wisconsin (!!!) to get away from a particularly bad Missouri winter. You've got to be right about the importance of the railroads, and that "Go west, young man, go west!" invitation having big influence. My GGGrandfather was with the unit. I have often wondered if that exposure led some in later years to come to this part of the country perhaps from stories their fathers told. Of course, the other aspect was the opening of railroads and general western expansion. There was a newspaper blurb about another relative reporting several deaths in the Kansas winter and then the newspaper editorialized something to the effect that "and still the land agents paper us with flyers". I think there was a definite marketing campaign that drew many easterners to the golden plains.

The search link wasn't working after the University of Kansas changed a lot of its older "ukans.edu" URLs to "ku.edu". Their progress was our set-back. 3. Hello Mark: I doubt my STONE family is related to your's. After reading your web site I could find no correlation. To the best of my research to date it seems like my Thomas STONE born 1770 is an isolated STONE. I have two conflicting data on where he was from. One source says PA and another Ireland. I suppose they could both be correct in that he may have come from Ireland thru PA. I have never found a ships list or oath of allegiance for him. -----Original Message----- From: gilburns@aol.com [mailto:gilburns@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2006 9:01 PM To: OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Re: request for local help to do some look ups Hi Jerry. 3. Mark, Thanks so much for the info. I went to your web site and found a lot of Stone/Flynn info I was missing. Stella Ditmeyer Gilbert was my 1stC 2xR. I descend from John Franklin Stone (aka/James Franklin) and Mary Christina Kess(ler) - she is listed as Mary Kess on son Barton Stone's death cert. His father is listed as John, and I have found him as both John and James in census records. Barton's death cert says John/James was b in MD, but census records variously give OH and IN., and the 1870 census says his parents were b in NC. I don't believe he was b in OH. Would you tell me how you derived at VA? Barton William Stone (b White Oak) and Catherine 'Katie' I Flynn were my great grandparents. They were married 4 Mar 1881 in Butler Co, and had 9 children, one of which was a stillborn male twin to my grandmother. Barton d 11 Oct 1925 and Katie d 3 Apr 1934. Katie's parents were John Flynn b 1818 Ireland and Sarah Hill b abt 1831 Ireland. We believe that Sarah was his 2nd wife, but have no proof. They lived in Rialto, which was where Katie was born. We have documented 5 children (+ descendants) for them. John d 12 May 1914, and Sarah then lived with her dau Margaret in Mt Airy until Sarah's death 22 Nov 1915. Margaret Flynn and Frank Kroger had 1 known son, Frank H Kroger, who went to Oregan and worked as an accountant for a lumber mill. I have birth, marriage, census, death and burial records for Stones and Flynns, as well as family and gravestone photos. I have too much informtion to include here, so if you would like to e-mail me off list, perhaps we could exchange more information. Thanks again, I have looked for years for some of the information I found in your wonderful site...Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: <gilburns@aol.com> To: <OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2006 10:00 PM Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Re: request for local help to do some look ups > Hi Jerry. > > My name is Mark Gilbert and I am a Stone descendant. 2. Hi Jerry. My name is Mark Gilbert and I am a Stone descendant. My Stones I have traced beginning in Colerain Twp (White Oak), Hamilton County in 1848. My line moved to Stockton, Fairfield Township, Butler County, Ohio from 1870 onward. Take a look at my online information and I will study what you sent sometime this week. The Stones will be under the 'S' surname. our southwest ohio families' genealogy is at http://www.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=eimarkg and rootsweb worldconnect database: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=mgilbert -----Original Message----- From: Jerry Joe Sonner <intel4004@gmail.com> To: OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, 22 Jan 2006 16:29:42 -0600 Subject: [OHBUTLER-L] Re: request for local help to do some look ups I am in hope that someone local can help me with information on the STONE family who lived in or near Hamliton, FarifieldTwp, Butler Co., Ohio 1800-1870ish? 2. Diane Beaty
    3. I'm not related, but ran across this mention of a fellow who only lived for a year in Butler County before traveling on and thought someone might be interested in his bio... http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/leavenworth/leavenworth-co-p33.html VALANTINE CARL BECKER, farmer and stock-raiser, P. O. Pleasant Ridge, came to Kansas in May, 1855, and first located on Crooked Creek, Jefferson County, where he lived six months, engaged in farming. From Jefferson County he removed to Lee County, Iowa, where he lived one and a half years, and then returned to Kansas, locating in the city of Leavenworth, where he lived twelve years, and was engaged in freighting. From the city of Leavenworth he removed to his farm in Kickapoo Township, where he has since lived. He is a member of the Lutheran Church. He was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, January 28, 1835, and lived in his native country until his eighteenth year, when he emigrated to America, and first located in Butler County, Ohio, where he lived one year, and was engaged in farming. From Ohio he removed to Lee County, Iowa, where he lived three years, and from there came to Kansas. Mr. Becker was married in the city of Leavenworth, April 6, 1858, to Miss Mary Litsch, a ! native of Kentucky. They have two children living, Lillie and Nellie. Mr. B. has a fine upland farm of 133 acres, all enclosed, and all in cultivation, except fifty-eight acres, which is timber land, and is covered with a good growth of oak, walnut, and hickory. His orchard covers ten acres, and contains 1,000 apple, seventy-five pear, 500 peach, and fifty plum and cherry trees. The water supply is excellent, consisting of two fine springs and a good well. The improvements on his property consist of a four-roomed frame dwelling house, large frame barn, 40 x 44, smoke-house, etc. He pays particular attention to raising wheat, corn, and fine horses. His wheat this season (1882) averaged twenty-five bushels to the acre. His corn averaged forty bushels to the acre. He had twenty-five acres in oats this year which averaged forty bushels to the acre. He has one or two blooded horses on his farm, which it is well worth a journey to see. 3. Ann just wrote me that the link brings up the search page. To get the marriages, when you get to the linked search page, put the surname DILL into the correct box. Where it says Event, select Marriages. Then select the Region (North America) the country, (United States) and state (Ohio) In the Box for BATCH NUMBER, put this numer: M514511 Click Search and that should bring up the page with the Dill marriages. You can use that same number for other surnames, too. Norma At 09:33 PM 1/16/2006 -0500, you wrote: >Hi, >I went to Familysearch.org and using the IGI numbers found some Dill >marriages in Butler Co. 3. If you use the 1850 Green Twp, Hamilton Co census with John D Dill 44 Ann 39 Cort A 15 Margt 13 Mathew 11 Elias F 7 and the one I just found 1860 Crosby Twp, Hamilton Co OH p452 Mathew Dill 21 Famer OH Anna Dill 47 House work OH Margaret Dill 23 House work OH Elias Dill 17 Farm Laborer OH Samuel Pesline 6 then John was dead by the time Charles was born in July 1861, as well as dead by June 1860. This does make it harder for Ann and John to have been Charles parents. This makes it look way more like Margaret was Charles's maybe, unwed mother and he was then adopted by his grandmother. I don't even want to start in on who the heck Samuel Pesline was! I'd say much of this can be cleared up by looking at some vital records! Ann

    3. Gee I tried searching a bit differently and look what I found 1860 Crosby Twp, Hamilton Co OH p452 Mathew Dill 21 Famer OH Anna Dill 47 House work OH Margaret Dill 23 House work OH Elias Dill 17 Farm Laborer OH Samuel Pesline 6 THIS is the same Ann Dill married to John D Dill in 1850. Still not sure we can actually say, the Charles Dill married to Jennie is the one listed with Ann Dill and Margaret in 1870. This Anna Dill does match with the 1870 and 1880 listing a Charles Dill however. It is the leap from 1900 to 1880 that I'm not sure about. Ann

    3. Why couldn't Ann Dill be the mother of Charles? Lots of women have given birth at the age of 48. It is always possible however, that Margaret was the unwed mother of Charles who was then adopted by Ann and then listed as a son. I have seen that happen too.
