As late as the 1950's there was no degree requirement to teach in Ohio. -------------- Original message -------------- From: Jknitl@aol.com > > In a message dated 5/23/2006 3:04:48 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > Sftrail@aol.com writes: > > For your aunt to have been a school principal, I'd think she would have > gone > to > college somewhere. > > > > Not necessarily. I would just like to mention that we need to remember how intense the curriculum was in the past. Long division was done in ones head for example. Long passages of classics were memorized where maybe now it seems to be skimmed over. Readers did not have the variety of reading material as now and from what I have surmised, most was more difficult than now. Writings by Ben Franklin and others were far more difficult than what the average person reads today. Aren't our newspapers and pamphlets written at an 8th grade level even now? Maybe it is 6th? One or the other..just cannot remember now. I am a RNBSN and have homeschooled for 7 years. I have come to the conclusion that children who were able to go to school in the "olden" days received a great education in comparison to what many children receive today. Mcguffey readers were not easy. Education was very important to parents and children..it was a great privilege to be able to read and write and parents enforced children to learn and behave. Now sadly, children are so undisciplined that many..not all of course are not concerned about learning...and those children in turn ruin it for the rest of them by being disruptive. You cannot teach children who don't want to learn. Just my opinion but a one room school house full of children who wanted to learn would surpass an elaborate building full of children who "have to go to school." Kudos to our past teachers regardless of their official education. I bet they were some pretty intelligent teachers...

Not necessarily. I taught school in the 1970s in Atlanta and the principal of the school (K-8) never went to college. The requirements were stiffer by the 70s, but he was grandfathered in. So, in the 1890s it's quite possible there was no such requirement. My grandmother taught school in Indiana in the 1920s and she went to a special school for teachers in Indianapolis which was only a year or less. There were many teacher schools and Normal Colleges for teachers to prepare, with varying lengths of preparation.
My grandparents farmed near Okeana, but both went to college for several years in the early 1890s. They went to Otterbein College in Westerville OH. During that time period, there were also colleges in Cincinnati and of course Miami U. For your aunt to have been a school principal, I'd think she would have gone to college somewhere. Kathleen, Google "normal schools" and see what you come up with. Here in Indiana, a person attended what they called Normal School, the equivalent of a teacher's college at that time. The Middletown Library had this person contact me to see if I could help her. I am afraid that I will not be much help, but I thought someone out there might be able to help her. I found her committs about the connection to Charles R. Hook very interesting. Roger Miller ----- Original Message ----- From: KMartin133@aol.com To: rmiller001@cinci.rr.com Sent: Sunday, May 21, 2006 9:31 AM Subject: WILLIAMSON/HOOK genealogy Mr. Miller: I just got your message, sorry for the delay. I'm trying to find the family of the CHARLOTTE WILLIAMSON that married Ira Gage HOOK on June 30, 1835 in Cincinnati, OH. She was born about 1810 in Ohio to parents born in PA (at least that's what the 1880 census states). Ira had passed in 1843 in Mobile, AL so she was back in Cinci by 1850 with her 3 boys John Canada, Henry Hamilton, and my ancestor Charles. Ira had been the owner of the riverboats "Victoria" and "Anne Calhoun" mfrd. by his family boatyard in Marietta, OH. (Knox & Hook). They lived in Mobile (per 1840 census), but he was "of Cincinnati" running between this location and presumably New Orleans and points west. By 1860, Charlotte was working for a Cincinnati doctor as a nurse, with her sons assisting. John and Charles enlisted for the Union in IL. in 1864. I think Charlotte was involved as a nurse for the Union during the war, as Henry was later a director of the Cinci Sanitation. She is listed in the 1870 and 1880 MO. census (Kaw and Kansas City) as a nurse. Charles R. (Ruffin) Hook, son of Henry Hamilton Hook wrote a small genealogy for the "Humphrey Hooke of Bristol" book that he initiated in the 1920's stating Charlotte died in 1884. I don't know where though or who her family was. Charles R. Hook was a pretty prominent man in your area, and I feel he must've left more papers somewhere in the area. He was founder of Armco Steel and Junior Achievement. Thanks so much for any assistance, Kimberly Hook Martin Kim "Life is a promise, fulfill it." Talking about the education of a teacher depends on the time frame when the person taught. Here in the midwest back in the early days of settlement and thereafter in many states you only had to have so many years of schooling and take a test and you could be a teacher. Then I imagine after so many years of teaching and if needed you moved up to be the principal or administrator. I have friends in their 70's and 80's who started out in their teaching careers with only a certificate gained after taking a test. Maybe that would explain this situation in Ohio too. Just a thought! ----- Original Message ----- From: Sftrail@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, May 23, 2006 2:08 PM To: OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] teacher education My grandparents farmed near Okeana, but both went to college for several years in the early 1890s. Hello All, I am new to your list, but because of information I just received I am searching Hamilton, Butler co, Ohio for a marriage record. My GGF seems to have been married at least six times and the last (illegal) wife was Ella Ellen Townsend Thomas Boden. It seems that Lewis Boden did not believe in divorce. He would just walk away, sat his wife was dead and marry again. Elizabeth Johnston, married in Webster, Westmoreland co. PA 1858 Mary Mitchell, Washington Co, PA married in Wellsburg, WV 1868 Harriet Gover, lived in Belmont co Ohio, Wheeling WV and East Liverpool, Ohio 1870 Ellen Pascoe, from Ohio married in Somerton, Belmont co 1886 Ella Ellen Townsend Thomas from Canada maried in Hamilton 1908 There were 18 children (and still counting) 13 daughters and 5 sons I there marriage records online for Butler co. online? Does anyone have access to marriage records? This man has driven me crazy for 20 years now I am finding all kinds of information on him. Sometime around the Civil War he changed his name to Lewis Willgues, then about 1905 in order to collect on the Civil War pension he had to change his name back to Boden, and on pension papers he names all his children as Boden's but Harriet Gover and Ellen Pascoe raised their children as Willgues's, then he went back to Boden again. Thank you for any help Terry

I believe the girls were born first. I don't have dates till John Jr. in 1796; Isaac b. 29 Sept. 1800 and George Hill Skiles (my line) b. 1809 Unfortunately and I am not sure where now that I got the information but as you can see from my previous email Rachel and Rebecca both married in Ohio prior to the birth of their brother George.
