While adding a link on the county OHGenWeb page to this thread of discussion about planning a trip to Hamilton, I noticed that there is also a bed and breakfast in Hamilton. Says it is a pre-Civil War home with the amenities of modern life. Does anyone know if the owners are history buffs? Anyway, this might be another option for staying in Hamilton. Nancy http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohbutler
Audra: The present courthouse was erected in 1889; there was a different courthouse previous to that. See the following link for courthouse history: http://www.butlercountyprobatecourt.org/index.cfm?page=virtualTour You are correct on both the location of the cemetery and where the records are located. I believe a church representative is the only person allowed to work with the records so you might want to do that by mail. The smallish cemetery of St. Mary's is located on the east side of Pleasant Avenue and is not very noticeable from the street; keep a sharp eye to your left once you pass St. Clair Avenue while heading south or you will miss the entrance. Diane Beaty Before us lies a new day, and in the distance a new world, ours to create by the strength of our faith.
Thanks again for the help. St. Mary's church combined into St. Julie Billiart from what I am understanding. The cemetery (St. Mary's cemetery that I want is the one at 4030 Pleasant Ave correct? Does anyone know? Also, here are some places that I plan on going 1. Butler county Archives 2. Butler county museaum/historical society 3. St. Mary's Cemetery (some are there, unsure about Thomas though 4. Lane library 5. Courthouse to take a pic and look at it since John was a judge there in the past and would have actually "stood" in there. How awesome is that? lol I am such a silly sentimental but I cannot help it:) 6. Want to see Neilan Bld 7. Want to look at the old addresses where a few lived though am sure new bulidings by now 8. Want to see the monument lol, I am gonna have to run!! lol Anyway, Is that a good list? Better choices than any of those? What about the recorders office? What about Butler County health department vs Hamilton Health department? The Butler health department says copies can frequently be obtained free. What is the criteria? There were other St. Mary's cemeteries on google so is this the right one that I need? I am only going to have one day and hope to get a lot but will never be able to get it all by any means so I am trying to make a plan, and be organized. Thanks again, Audra
Ask for Linda Thompson at Lane Public Library....lots of info/knowledge..SW Ohio Genealogy society. Call John Francis at New London Cemetery....Paddy's Run is Shandon, Oh, and the New London Cemetery is at Shandon...plus there is another, older cemetery in the middle of Shandon. St Alouisious Cathlic Church outside of Shandon may have record of Thomas, since it looks like he might have been a farmer around Paddy's Run (Shandon)....OR St Marys might be the answer....my understanding is that the family is Irish Catholic?? Before you leave home, go to the Butler County website through Genweb. It has lots of info that may help you in figuring out which cemeteries that you may want to concentrate your search. The official Butler County (gov) website will give you all of the addresses for your searches. The others are correct about the Hamiltonian. It will be the most centrally located for your endeavors, since it is two or three blocks in each direction from where you are wanting to go (the library, courthouse, archive center, Veterans museum, easy access to any part of Butler Co from that location). Venice Cemetery is at Ross. Bunker Hill is at Reily. Millville Cemetery..St Charles Cemetery, on 129. Macedonia Cemetery on Drewsburg Road, towards Indiana, but still in the general area of Paddys Run, plus there are a lot of "family plots" scattered all through the area. That is where the info from the Butler County website may save you a lot of time hunting, once you determine what area Thomas might have had as a final resting place. Most of the folks are real friendly and helpful, especially when they find out you are one of us, a couple of generations removed. And, of course, Neilan Blvd runs right along the river from almost downtown Hamilton to Fairfield. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Audra4RLS@aol.com> To: <OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 17, 2006 5:22 PM Subject: [OHBUTLER-L] help please > Hello, > I really need some advise from any kind soul in regard to planning a > trip > to Hamilton City to work on genealogy. SORRY....I just now noticed that you said you lost the emails that we sent you. I believe all of the info included in this is still correct, plus, try going on the ohiogenweb site for butler county. It has a lot of information about the entire county. Also, try contacting Linda Thompson at Southwest Ohio Genealogy. I believe they still meet at Lane Public Library, so Lane Public could forward this on to her, although she usually is somewhere on the Butler County List. ----- Original Message ----- From: "G.Williams" <genewill@infinet.com> To: <OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 17, 2004 9:35 AM Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Looking for a cemetery > Shandon has two cemeteries.......the one you are wanting is "New London > Cemetery Association". Hi, Audra! I've lived in Hamilton for about 13 years now. Hope you enjoy your visit here. The Hamiltonian is a very nice 5(?) story facility next to the river. It is within walking distance of most of the facilities you will want to visit. The library (open 7 days/week) is about 4 blocks away, and has a very nice history room with plenty of microfilm to peruse--newspapers, census, etc. The Butler County Records Center (http://www.butlercountyohio.org/records/) is just a couple blocks up Third Street from the library--M-F hours. The Butler County Recorder's (http://www.butlercountyohio.org/recorder/) office is just a block from the hotel on High Street--NOT in the very impressive old courthouse, but on the hotel side of the street. The museum is between the library and the hotel--shame on me, but I've never been there. If you are here when it's open you should pay a visit to the Soldiers, Sailors & Pioneers Monument on Monument & High Streets (at the bridge) http://www.butlercountyohio.org/monument/. We also have a Welcome Center across from the Vet Museum--again, the hours vary. While the Hamiltonian has a very nice restaurant, we also have a couple "small-town" type places on High Street. My personal favorite is the Cozy Cafe--open Tues-Sunday for breakfast and lunch. There's also Ohio Lunch across the street from the Cozy and up about a block. Of course, we also have the chain restaurants across the river on the "West Side" and all the way through town. About 5-10 minutes from the hotel--cross the bridge and stay on Main. Hope this helps, and that your visit is fruitful! Audra, The hotel is very nice. I read that it is going to be changing to a Marriott Courtyard hotel soon. There is a restaurant in the hotel. The library is very close to the hotel and there is a small museum nearby. Since your time there will be limited, it might helpful to give the list members some background information on your ancestors. We might be able to point you in the right direction as to where to go to gather the information you are seeking. What names are you looking for? Do you have a time frame of when they lived there? Are any ancestors buried there? Do you know what faith they were? Are there specific documents that you are looking for? Hope we can be of assistance. The Hamiltonian is a nice hotel and right there for lookups. That is where I stayed. He has some Georges on it that look awful familiar, plus I have already discovered that he is related through the Joyce and VanAtta gang from our neck of the woods. To put some more light on the subject......no big deal, but he is part of the Gilbert Avenue and Gilbert House family from Cincinnati....some of the earliest people in Hamilton County. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Sftrail@aol.com> To: <OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 15, 2006 3:50 PM Subject: [OHBUTLER-L] Charles T. Do any of you know anything about Charles T. Jenkins who was a freshman advisor at Miami U back in 1938? I have a letter from him to one of my aunts, giving some family history. The letter says he was in the N.Y. A. Office of Student Personnel. I'm wondering if he had other family members, children, maybe still living in Butler Co, who could answer some more questions. His wife's name was Noble Jenkins. Thanks. Nancy Sween
