Hi All, Just back from 2 weeks in CA taking care of family business. We did camp, were it's cool, on the CA northern coast for a few days. Saturday we're back at the Cemetery. Be sure to bring water and pace yourself with the heat. I look forward to seeing those who can make it. I will update the website soon. (I hope before Saturday) Caroline Huppi

I currently have a subscription with Ancestry and find that I got more info. before they made the changes. I liked it when one could just go to family trees and find diff. info on the same individual. Even though I have sent info. on some of my ancestry, it does not show up when I just type in the name to search for. There are many errors in the censuses that I have found in spelling. True it beats most of the other sources !! I have found a lot more in some instances in just " googling" :o)
I find it infurating when you enter a name for an EXACT NAME it cycle and instead of returning to EXACT it's default position of RANKED SEARCH. For the 1870 census I entered a name using EXACT and what I got was a RANKED response. I was looking for a man in N.J. their RANKED SEARCH had a guy in GUAM. I want to control the choice until "I" change it, not get dumped into RANKED. Three times I informed them of spelling errors, alternative surnames, for various census years. Nothing was done for over 2 months so I wrote Juliana? who writes one of the weekly columns as a complaint, not a plee for help. About 2 weeks later, 3 of the 4 changes I had submitted were changed. I'm sure it was her doing and not the forms I submitted months before. I'm still waiting on the last correction, but I'm not holding my breath. Ancestry is now the only game in town...what a pity. It used to be good, now you have to fight and figure out how to get what you want. The "NEW and IMPROVED ANCESTRY" should go the way of the "NEW COKE" Tom near Dallas
Message I recieved from Ancestry.com Dear Laura, We appreciate your message. Thank you for your submission. In our continued efforts to provide an improved experience for our users, we have created an online error reporting system, called Customer Contributed Content. When you are viewing the record for a specific individual where this feature is available, you will see a "Comments and Corrections" link located in the right PAGE TOOLS column. (PLEASE NOTE: This is not available on any page where an image appears, but rather on the index for the individual whose image you may be viewing.) Please use this feature to submit this suggestion and any future corrections. The information included below indicates how this feature is used. NAME CORRECTIONS You can provide corrections or additions for a record, such as for transcription errors, birth or maiden names (e.g., if a known name change has occurred), nicknames (to increase search options that will locate this record), name variations (if these occur for records), incorrect originals (i.e., the original record is incorrect). To indicate this information: 1. Click on the "Comments and Corrections" link from the individual's record page 2. Click the "Add an Alternate Name" link on the next page 3. Enter information in the Given Name and Surname fields 4. For the Reason, indicate any of those previously indicated 5. Provide a brief but helpful Explanation of the information you enter 6. Click the Submit Correction button USER COMMENTS General comments you wish to indicate can be included here. These comments should adhere to the standard Message Board format. For example, you might include comments that "The rest of this family is found under the surname Smythe, though this individual's name is spelled correctly (Smith)." To add a User Comment, please do the following: 1. Click on the "Comments and Corrections" link from the individual's record page 2. Click the "Add a Comment" link on the next page 3. Fill in the Subject field with a brief description, such as "Other Family of John Smith in SSDI" 4. Fill in the Comment field with information you wish to include as your comment 5. Fill in the Source field if you have a reference that verifies the information you provide 6. You can indicate your Comment Type as Additional Detail, Contradiction, Question, or Link 7. Click the Post Comment button REPORT AN ERROR While some of the above submissions may be classified as errors, those issues you find that cannot be submitted with the above two options (such as an unreadable image, linking to an incorrect image, a page is missing, etc.) should be submitted via this third choice. Following are steps to submit this type of report: 1. Click on the "Comments and Corrections" link from the individual's record page 2. Click the "Report an Error" link on the next page 3. Choose the appropriate issue from the "Problem type" drop-down menu 4. Enter information in the "Description" box that better specifies the steps you took to duplicate this error, the text of any error message you may have received, etc. 5. Click the orange Submit button to post your error report Please note that a new window is typically created when submitting either a User Comment or an Error Report. In both of these cases, you will want to make sure you do not have software running that blocks pop-up windows. Otherwise, the appropriate form may not appear for you to enter information for submission. Additionally, please understand that fixes to errors on Ancestry.com are posted firstly in the order of those which affect the greatest number of users, and thereafter in the order in which they are reported. For this reason, fixes for some errors may take longer than others to be posted. We appreciate your patience. If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know. Ron, They have new feature where you fill out your family tree and add pictures, etc (your own web space). So once you are on their site they will probably use your records. This happened to me when they bought out RootsWeb.com. My family tree is on Ancestry.com they took it from RootsWeb.com who promised that your family tree would not be burned to CD. Now I do not know if it is burned to CD but you are being charged to see what you can see for free on RootsWeb.com. I sent Ancestry.com a complaint and they answered and I did not agree with their answer. Anyway, you have to take the good with the bad on Ancestry.com. We can just try and keep them in line or rather online and make sure you complain. Take care, Judy Minihan

Rod, I think it is only helpful now if you know who, what and when you are looking for. It used to be that if someone on the list was searching for an ancestor I could type in the name and get a recap of all the records. I could then look down the list on the same page and see what records were available. If I wanted to see the Civil War pension record for that individual I would click on that, go to the next screen, click on the name and view the document. Now you have to go to the tab, type in the name, choose the category and scroll through page after page to find what you are looking for. If there are no records there then you have to move to another tab and try again. If you aren't sure what you are looking for it makes it worse. Most of the emails we get on the list are someone trying to find their ancestor who lived in the Butler County area or passed through at one time or another. Before if you typed the name Doe, you would get the recap, take a look at the recap and see immediately if there were any records for Butler County vs. Montgomery, Warren, etc. Sandi -----Original Message----- From: carpente@wcoil.com [mailto:carpente@wcoil.com] Sent: Friday, July 28, 2006 2:29 PM To: OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Ancestry.com changes Sandi, I have been a subscriber for a couple years and noticed the changes last night. Hi Listers, I see no change on Ancestry.com. I have been a member for about 10 years. You can contact Ancestry.com online or call on the 800 #. I agree about searches. When I search on my last name I get a results page with 4 tabs (Historical Records, Family Trees, Stories & Publications, and Photos & Maps). On the Historical Records tab I see a breakdown for Census, BMD, Military, etc. So it appears to me that what they have done is taken what once was a single results page and separated the results into 4 tabs. Is that what you mean by "pick the category"? You now have to look at 4 tabs where before it was all presented on a single long page? I suspect that server performance might have been one reason why they made this change. The only other thing I noticed was that they got rid of the Ranked Search tab. -- Dennis Kowallek Hanover Twp., Butler Co. kowallek@iglou.com ******************

I am interested in speaking with anyone who currently has a subscription with ancestry.com. I have been a subscriber for years and always found it to be helpful, however, they have changed the website this week making it every difficult to do searches without going through page after page within a category. It used to be an easy search, type in the name and a recap would be shown listing categories that records were in. You could then pick and choose what you wanted to view. Now you have to pick the category and go through page after page. Any thoughts? Sandi Orlando, FL
I've had genealogy on freepages, worldconnect for years and never had this problem. I've also been a Ancestry.com member from almost their begining, still no problem. We're doing genealogy and the first thing they tell you, is to check the sources. Now, you are making a statement. What are your sources for this statement of them puting "your" info on CD's.
