    3. Larry, She is listed in public records in Punta Gorda Fla, but there is no death record listed for her, so she may still be living. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry Helton" <spoors@localnet.com> To: <OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 16, 2006 11:27 AM Subject: [OHBUTLER-L] info. on someone > I have written to my grandfather's cousin, Golden (Pence) McWilliams, for several years that lives in Punta Gorda, Florida. She is in her 80's. She was in poor health and was recovering at a granddaughter's house. I have that address and continued to send cards there for the past year and a half. I do not get a response from her, nor will her granddaughter let me know of Golden's status. Is there any definite way for me to find out if she has died? Thanks. > > Take care, > J. 2. _http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi_ (http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi) lets you check the SSDI. I tried for Golden and just for G McWilliams. No Golden, and no G McWilliams in Florida. Not sure how current this SSDI is, though. 1. McBride's 1836 Plat Maps...
    2. Dennis Kowallek
    3. We now have medium resolution images of all of McBride's 1836 Butler County Plat Maps online at... http://kowallek.myiglou.com/dennis/genealogy/butler-plat-search.htm From that page you can also search my index to the names on these plat maps. This index ***is not*** the Shirley Baker index from the book "The County of Butler, Ohio, McBride's Map of 1836 Combined With Atlases Of 1875 and 1895". A small sampling of Shirley's index was found to contain omissions and other errors, so I decided to create a new (and hopefully better) index from scratch. Hanover and Reily Townships have already been loaded in this index. I will be adding more townships to the index as time permits, hopefully at a rate of 1 township every 2-3 weeks. I am currently working on Ross Township. We may also be putting higher resolution images of these maps online soon. I need to talk to Nancy about this. Enjoy! -- Dennis Kowallek Hanover Twp., Butler Co. kowallek@iglou.com ******************

    3. From my understanding, the Mound Cemetery at Monroe is originally an Indian Burial Ground that was taken over by the first settlers and then used as an interment for their dead.....also, there is an Indian Signal Mound on Wayne Madison Road, almost to the end, where Thomas Road intersects, near Jacksonburg. When I was a "youngin", we used to find a lot of Indian tools (stone) on Dry Fork Creek and Kiatta Creek, very few arrowheads, but lots of specifically shaped stones, probably used for turning corn into meal, etc. Dad even used some of my finds for doorstops, since all the rooms in the house had doors. Most of us boys had our own collection in our Dad's garage, in the basement, or on the back porch......lots of pieces of flint, but, alas, no pottery, although there were quite a few banks of the "blue" clay on the local creeks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Caroline Huppi" <chuppi@cinci.rr.com> To: <OHBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 10, 2006 10:50 AM Subject: Re: [OHBUTLER-L] Ancient Work > Dennis, > > From What I've read, Butler County had the 2nd largest number of Indian/ > ancient Works of any county in Ohio outside of Ross County. 3. Dennis, From What I've read, Butler County had the 2nd largest number of Indian/ ancient Works of any county in Ohio outside of Ross County. The 1836 maps show some of the working. JP Maclean 1848-1859 worked in the area and published a book in 1887 describing his results the books title begins with The Mound Builders... This book has disappeared from the Middletown Library. Some of Butler County's ancient works are on the Historic registry as found online- however you have to guess where the sites are and whether or not they are in existance today. Some of the Butler County "Historic sites" on the registry are no longer standing including an Indian Mound in Liberty Township and a Hughes House in Liberty Township. I'm glad you have access to the 1836 map and are putting the images online. Sayler Park is a Cincinnati suburb. Does this indicate that she stayed in Cincinnati? Mr. Miller: Thank you so much! I finally have tracked down a bit more information on this family. Charlotte married William Webster on August 5, 1869 at Miami, Ohio (I don't know if this is a town or the county). She supposedly passed in 1884, and I've found her with William in the 1870 Lemon Twp. and 1880 Middletown, Butler Co, Oh census listings. So, they must've moved again. Her parents WERE John and Elizabeth Williamson, Elizabeth and brother Daniel having been buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. Are there quite a few older cemeteries in Middletown where Charlotte may have been put to rest? Thank you so much! 2. I wonder if your Lewis family has any thing common with my great grandmother, Louisa Sophronia Lewis, b, abt 1844 in Indiana. She was the dau. of Ara Sherbon Lewis,b 15 Jan. 1822 in Virginia. He was killed by Indians 21 Feb.1851 and buried in Jefferson Twsp., Adams Co., Ind. Louisa's mother was Sophronia O'Harra,b 15 Jan, 1826 in Franklin Co., Ohio and died in Topeka, KS 11 Jan 1901. Her 2nd marriage was to Benjamin Franklin Bowman, an educator and Methodist preacher, who raised Louisa. Louisa Lewis married my great grandfather, John Dickinson Round, 1 Jan 1861 in Doniphan Co., KS. He was the son of Ezra Round, b 14 Oct. 1810 in Butler Co., Ohio. John was born in , what is now White Co., Ind. in 1839. Charles Round

    3. I have the Thomas and Anna Lewis [1778-1870]--- PA/NJ, OH, IN--line traced fairly well from Sheffield Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana and west--1830 on. Thomas's land grant for 1829 in Tippecanoe states he is from Butler County, Ohio. The four children were Elizabeth, Jane, Henry, and James. Almost all of the children of Elizabeth and James eventually migrated to Kansas. My grandmother, Hazel Lewis Parsons [1895-1993] was born in Jewell County, Kansas and lived there until 1935. 1. Elizabeth Lewis Miller: married George Miller, eight children, lived in Bath Township, Franklin County, IN; after George's death, after 1850 census, she and the children moved to Iroquois County, Illinois, to be near her widowed sister-in-law, Lydia Patton Lewis, widow of James Lewis. Elizabeth Lewis Miller and Lydia Patton Lewis moved to Burr Oak, Jewell County, Kansas in the 1870's with many of their children, where both died around 1881-82. 2. Jane Lewis Mattix: married Jacob Mattix and lived in Clinton County, IN. After his death, about 1850, she lived with her parents until they died, both age 92, in 1870. Afterwards, she lived with her son Ira until she died in 1882. Three children. 3. Henry Lewis: married Sarah Drake, daughter of Moses and Elizabeth Pound Drake [NJ--Butler, OH]. Lived in Clinton County, IN, just over the county line from his parents. Three children. 4. James Lewis: married Lydia Patton [Marsh and Patton lines from NJ--early settlers of Hamilton and Butler counties in OH]. Seven children. Moved to Iroquois County, IL in 1853. James died, apparently suddenly, in 1855, age 44. Three sons served in the 9th Illinois Calvary from 1862-1865. Same three sons later pioneered in Burr Oak, Jewell County, Kansas, including my great-grandfather Calvin Elvin Lewis [1840-1926] While I have not researched the Miller family, the other Lewis marriages are to New Jersey families [Mattix, Drake, Patton]. This line is so puzzling. Thomas Lewis, son of James and grandson of Thomas and Anna, stated that he came from a Quaker family. However, this Lewis line does not show up in Hinshaw. I've searched and so has another researcher. The Patton and Marsh lines appear to be Presbyterian. I was interested in the UB minister neighbor, wondering if Anna had a German linage. On the 1870 Census, she is listed as unable to read/write, and states that her parents were foreign born. Rev. Kumbler was noted for not believing in education, especially for women. It's hard to believe that Thomas and Anna migrated to Butler County with no other relatives. Their neighbors in Wayne Township are rather stunningly intermarried. jeanne bedwell

    3. The Pioneer Biography: sketches of the lives of some of the early settlers of Butler County, Ohio, 1869-1871 devotes a chapter to Dr. Jacob Lewis. Jacob Lewis was born October 13, 1767 at Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey. His father, Zachariah Lewis, served in the Revolution and died of camp fever contracted while serving. Around 1790, Jacob visited his sister ? and her husband Joseph Kinan in Tygart's Valley, Virginia, west of the Allegheny Mountains. Joseph Kinan was killed in an Indiana attack, his sister captured, and their small children left bereft. Jacob escaped and rescued the children, returning them to relatives in NJ; Jacob later traveled to Michigan to ransom and rescue his sister. Some time later he settled briefly in PA before settling in Butler County, Ohio in 1802. Jacob Lewis' mother was Ann Doty. The Butler County pioneer Daniel Doty [1765-1848] was probably either her nephew or cousin. Dr. Jacob Lewis married, in 1796, Mrs. Deborah Randolph, widow of Samuel; she died in 1811. A Thomas Lewis witnessed a land purchase in Butler County in 1816 of land formerly owned by Samuel Randolph, which was inherited by Drake Randolph and purchased by Jacob Lewis. On the 1820 Census for Wayne Township, Butler County, Thomas Lewis is listed: 110001 02001, which matches the ages and genders of his four children. From examining the property records of his neighbors, I ascertained that Thomas lived in either section 24 or 25 T 3, R 3 of Wayne Township. He did not purchase property until 1829, when he entered a land grant in Sheffield Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Next door in Wayne Township was Henry Kumler, Sr., a United Brethren bishop, who officiated at the 1827 wedding of Thomas and Anna Lewis' daughter Jane Lewis to Jacob Mattix. Seven families away on the census is Jacob Bake, who was the Justice of the Peace who presided at the marriage of Elizabeth Lewis, the older daughter, to George Miller in 1823. Families in sections 22-36, include these from New Jersey: Cornelison, Mattix, Bake, Smith, Sherrod, Drake, Hunt, Pierce, and these from Pennsylvania: Campbell, Iliff, Kumbler, Cooper, Walter. Thomas Lewis was born in PA and his wife Anna was born in NJ. Still puzzled about their family lines, though it appears that Jacob Lewis and Thomas Lewis are relatives. jeanne bedwell

    3. Thanks for this summary of the life of Dr. Jacob Lewis and the continuing mystery of Thomas Lewis of Pennsylvania. I've encountered this Thomas several times in my search for the parents of my Great-great-great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Lewis, born in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio in 1810. It turns out that his parents were Jonathan Lewis (brother of Dr. Jacob Lewis) and Elizabeth Coon, who were married in Basking Ridge, New Jersey in 1794 and moved to Hamilton around 1803. The family bible of Aaron Lewis, brother of Thomas Jefferson Lewis, documents the family and descendents of Zephaniah Lewis, father of Jonathan and Dr. Jacob Lewis. There are a lot of Thomas's in this line, all the way back to Edmund Lewis' son Thomas who came with Edmund and Mary on the ship Elizabeth to Massachusetts in 1634. Though Thomas of Pennsylvania may be related in some way to the Zephaniah Lewis family, we can't follow the relationship at this point. Perhaps this Thomas line can be traced through Illinois, where many Butler County residents relocated in the mid-1800s. Michael Alan Lewis Eleventh Generation lineal male descendent of Edmund Lewis
