Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xVB.2ACE/1593.1.1 Message Board Post: i know who Sybil JACOBS is. She was born Sybil LITTLE, sister to my ancestor, Rhoda LITTLE who married Richard RILEA in Morgantown, WV. Richard drew a pension of $96.00 a year from the 8th of May 1819 until the time of his death, August 7, 1839 in Brown County, Ohio. According to Thompson's HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS OF BROWN COUNTY, Richard lived in Washington Township in 1829 and was a Township Trustee for 3 terms. He was buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Section #E, Lot 5, gravel, 2 miles S.E. of Sardenia, Ohio, off State Route 74, near Slab Camp Creek in Washington Township. Two months after Richard's death, on 4 October 1839, Rhoda appeared in the Brown County Court of Common Pleas and applied for a widow's pension. She testified to the date and place of her marriage and filed a page torn from the family Bible to show the names and ages of her children. Her son, William, then thirty years old, appeared with her and filed an affadavit as to the authenticity of the Bible record. Her sister, Sybl Jacobs, aged seventy years, also certified Rhoda's statements. Rhoda received her pension, the record showing her award of $96.00 a year to commence on March 4, 1848, and a certificate of pension issued on the 7th of June 1850 was issued in Cincinnati. It is not stated when she died. She also is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Notes for Rhoda Little: According to the 1850 and 1851 Census Records, Rhoda Little Rilea was still living in Brown County, Washington Township, Ohio. Her husband, Richard Rilea died in 1839. The spelling of her last name in the census records is "RILEY". You can contact me at [email protected] Jan Lund.

Looking for any info on early McCormick's in Brown Co., Ohio. I have John E. McCormick b. 1788 in Pa. living in Bracken Co., Ky. from 1809. In 1810 census for Bracken Co. there is listed a John McCormick (age 26-45) and a James McCormick (age 26-45). James is gone thereafter but John stays, marries Mary Anderson of Mason Co., Ky. in 1809, and dies in Augusta in 1868. John's son William b. 1814 graduated from Medical College of Ohio in Cincinnati in 1837 and practiced medicine in Lewis Twp, Brown Co., Ohio through mid 1850's before going back to Bracken Co. I'm wondering if John E. McCormick has any roots in Brown Co., Ohio. Anybody with any thoughts on this matter please advise. Art Miller, Louisville
Capt Robert Higgins,of the South Branch of the Potomac, Hampshire Co,Va [WV] and husband of Wright and Jolliff wives of Frederick Co,Va was namesake of Higginsport. Likely closely related to Lt Peter Higgins, seen early around Harrodsburg, Ky. It was written that Capt Robert Higgins was the "only" Va resident to settle on his own Va Military Land Bounty survey. Capt Robert Higgins was captured [Sept 1777?] when the British marched on Philadelphia [?] and held prisoner in se Pa. His slave cared for his children and farm after his 1st wife died. He was,in WV,a drover of cattle east to Baltimore. Likely that's wrong, but there were not many. . I'm thinking Elder John Phillips ministered at Higginsport Christian, and at Pisgah Ridge Christian, and at Shinkle's Ridge Christian, and ,we are learning,a bit at Mt Pleasant Christian. He had to be a friend of Mathew Gardner, Powell, Knowles.I don't know what Phillips family he was from-just that he married in 1839 my wife's James Kirkpatrick to Mahala Sellers, and 1849 Sanders to Robinson s of Felicity. Anybody know why the Edward Carrington survey no 613 at Fayetteville, and Perry township is so named and numbered. A Va military survey numbered around 613 should have been surveyed about 1788,by ,likely,John Obannon, and located on the Ohio River,or the east bank of the Little Miami River,or the lower, or western East Fork of the Little Miami rivern . Almost certainly no survey team braved the Indian dangers to survey so far into the interior, unless maybe Carrington's no 613 included a major salt lick, and deer lick, well known to hunters. I suppose that it's more likely that the location of no.613 for 1000 acres at Fayetteville, was the result of some land suit. I see survey's in the high 500's on Cloverlick fork n of Bethel, and s Williamsburg twnsp had a bit of 500-600. North of Williamsburg,on the creek, are 900's-1000. Why the isolated no 613.? Must be 15-20 miles from another 500-600-700 survey. Might be a story here. ?????? ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! If, in the 1850s, a Catholic girl would have been unwanted in her father's new marriage and he sought to "indenture" her to a family so that she would be "out of the way," might this have been done via an orphanage or the Catholic Church? How were such arrangements made? Brown County Probate Court had no guardianship records. I didn't find any in Clermont County Court, either. Her last known address with her father was in Campbell County KY and they had no record either. Her father's church in Clermont was St. Philomena; in Newport, it was either Corpus Christi or St. Stephen. What was the name of the Catholic Church at Arnheim in Brown County? Thanks, Buffy
