    2. Arthur Miller
    3. I find the following males listed in 1850 Brown Co. census: -James Carson in Jackson and in Byrd -John Patterson in Lewis -Samuel Rankin in Saidima These names match with marriages to McCormick females in Bracken Co., Ky. i.e. -James Carson md. Eliza Mary McCormick 1/10/1838 -John L . Patterson md. Lucy Ann McCormick 12/05/1826 -Samuel Rankin md. Maria McCormick 12/28/1830 In addition, Dr. Wm. B. McCormick b. 1814 in Bracken Co. lived in Higginsport before moving back to Bracken Co. in mid 1850's. He married Anna Maria Meeks about 1837---I believe she was from Brown Co. Any insights into these families and their connection to the McCormicks would be appreciated. Art Miller, Louisville

Most of the records that I >would want would be in the time frame of the 1850s-1870. Can I get buy >with buying just one of the two available? Which book do I want? The 1860s was a pretty sparse decade for records from the Arnheim Lutheran Church. The church was probably inactive from 1862 (or 1863) until 1869. On the first leaf of the original text of THE ARNHEIM LUTHERAN CHURCH PARISH REGISTER (Book I) it reads "1830-1861". However, the parish was not even founded until 1832 and the actual *contemporaneously* recorded register entries do not begin until 1846. Prior to 1846, either records were not kept or they were lost. Despite this, the volume does begin with a "Family Register" containing what appear to be *retrospective* entries (births, christenings, marriages) for the families in the congregation, some of which date back to the late 1700s. This information was apparently compiled from personal records in the possession of the individual members of the congregation: family bibles, church certificates, personal memory, etc. Most of the entries in this *retrospective* "Family Register" appear to have been recorded in the mid 1840s (about the time the *contemporaneously* recorded register entries begin), but some may have been recorded as late as the 1860s. THE ARNHEIM LUTHERAN CHURCH PARISH REGISTER (Book I) also does not end abruptly in 1861, but contains some entries from 1862 and a very few entries from both 1863 & 1869. THE ARNHEIM LUTHERAN CHURCH PARISH REGISTER (Book II) covers the years 1869 to 1907. The first line of page 1 begins, "These are the seconding members for the re-establishment of the German Protestant Peace Church in Arnheim, Brown Co., Ohio, Franklin Township, in the year 1869." So there's a gap between 1862 and 1869, covering most of the latter half of the time period in which you're interested. There is no evidence that records for this period once existed and were simply lost. Rather, it appears that the church was inactive/without a pastor during this period. Additional support for this comes from the fact that during this same period entries for a few of the Arnheim Lutheran families show up in the records of other Brown County German Protestant churches. The most likely church to have served the bulk of the Arnheim Lutheran families during this gap would have been the German Reform Church just outside of Arnheim. That congregation had split from Arnheim Lutheran in 1846. Unfortunately *no* records from the German Reform Church have ever been located and they are probably lost for good. So, some records for your research time frame (1850s-1870) may be in Book I. Anything from 1863 through 1868 is probably lost. And the 1869-1870 records would be in Book II. I hope this helps, Brian

    1. [OhBrown] debtors to Nicholas Devore estate c 1829
    2. J & S Mills
    3. Nicholas Devore died early in 1829 in Union Twp, Brown Co OH. His probate began about 20 April 1829, when his widow Sarah (who would die before his estate was settled), relinquished her administration. For those looking for ancestors in Brown Co OH c 1829 and a few years before, the list of people who owed Nicholas money might be helpful. Many of these individuals are not related to Nicholas Devore in any way that I know about. One involves a court case against his relative Abner Devore that would bear more research. Two debts were called "desperate" by the estate administrators, David Devore and Jonas Mann. These were made out to Thomas Hull and Jas Kerchivill. Others were listed along with the interest they currently bore. Because only two were listed as uncollectable, it appears these other individuals were in Brown Co OH c 1829. An account of notes and moneys on hand on 10 July 1829 bt David Devore and Jonas Mann: The following debtors owed varying amounts of money to Nicholas Devore, from$10 to 80.50. They included William Glase, Peter Bishop, Basel Glaze, Jacob Jolly, David Hanstabl(?), John Sreave, William McKinny, Joseph Jones, Sam Fitch, Samuel Pickeral(?), John Shreve, Stout Drake, Enoch Drake, Samuel Glase, William Fisher, George Crossley, John Lafaber, James Morrow, John Glase, Benjamin Devore, Dunnies(?) Pickerl, John Sreave, Basel McKelfrish(?), Michael Zellers, James Alexander, John Mann, Ben Devore, Thomas Hull, Jas Kerchivill, and "on a judgment on James Moores Docket against Abner Devore." Of these, Jacob Jolly was likely related to Elizabeth Jolly, who married Nicholas's grandson or step-grandson, Nicholas Sherry, a son of Daniel Sherry and Nancy Devore; the Drakes were likely related to Samuel Drake, who married Nicholas's great granddaughter, Mary Miller, a daughter of James Miller and Sarah Sherry; Benjamin Devore may have been his son Benjamin; Abner Devore may have been his son Abner; John Mann was married to Abigail Devore. Nicholas Devore has been said to be a weaver of coverlets. His estate contained a number of coverlets but no looms or large quantities of yarn. He appears to have been almost 100 years of age at his death, if I have the correct birth information of 1731-32 France or Germany. Sharon Mills

    3. We ate last night at Lake Manor,US Rr 68,and Ohio RT 774,between Mt Orab and Grant Lake. Because Starling Rd had just been tarred and chipped, we detoured over roads I haven't been on in many years. We went,en route, thru Locust Ridge hamlet, and Oakland Rd. Along it,we passed Shiloh Church, evidently namesake of nearby New Harmony-Shiloh Rd. It does not appear on my 1876 atlas, but the Surrey family does,so I suppose that neighborhood was called Surreyville. When we came out on RT 774 just west of Grant Lake, and Grant Lake Rd, there was 'no" frame church there that my failing memory thought was Shiloh church, a stop on the Underground RR after Clover schoolhouse on RT 133 in Clermont Co. After a nice dinner,we returned via RT 774, past the Warner cemetary that has been recently mentioned here. It's a well tended about 1 acre cemetary in the middle of no where. Too big to have been 1 family's cemetary. Either it was a churchyard pre 1876,or a township's cemetary. Then at Neal's Corner,we turned on Bethel-New Hope Rd past the winery. That becomes Spring Grove Rd in Clermont. Georgetown in about 1818. The highway between 1798 Bethel, and 1802 era West Union passed well north of Georgetown. It may have passed via White Oak Valley Rd and Wahlsburg, or maybe Bethel-New Hope Rd. Regardless, with new Georgetown in 1818,a new highway was rerouted, starting at the east edge of Bethel. In Adams Co, one sees portions of 'the Old State Rd". It ran south of Arnheim, where the paper town of Bridgewater was on Straight Creek. I was surporized how well drained the land along Bethel-New Hope Rd is. It must have been settled early. It has low survey numbers.
