    1. [OhBrown] Taylors' 1700's 1800's
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xVB.2ACE/1606 Message Board Post: Has anyone else noticed that there are so many Taylor families, from England, Australia, US, Ohio, just about everywhere, that were considered mute or "deaf & dumb" (terrible term) or hearing impaired? I have found four siblings from one Taylor family from NJ in the early 1800's. Over the years I have noticed many others, especially in England. It must be genetic! I would love to know if anyone else has noticed the same problem. On one of the boards I had even noted one nervy woman who was calling these unfortunate people "daft" and making fun of them. If anyone had ever done a study on this problem, what a help it might be for researchers! Is there any of the Taylors on this board who have an ancestor who was considered mute or deaf & dumb? Please contact me. UPDATE: Many people have mentioned checking out this website: http://www.mvy.com/spokehand.html My library has found both articles and faxed them to me. I think I'm on the right track!

    1. [OhBrown] 1790 census Dutchess Co,NY Quakers
    2. HERMON B FAGLEY
    3. I went to www.usgenweb.com and selected the sub-topic "STATE ARCHIVES SEARCH ENGINE" and set it at NY and searched for EVERHART and had 5 hits, that included the " 1790 Dutchess Co, NY CENSUS. " DUTCHESS is a s e NY county just above NY City. Many of it's people came to sw Ohio, directly,or thru western NY. Orange Co NY is west, across the Hudson River. Long Island Sound and Westchester Co,CT is east. >From there, thru assorted links, I wound my way to the Swathmore College Library's Quaker collection. 1st thing I read was that many disowned Quakers remained in the Quaker religious community, but were excluded only from their business meetings. This was new infromation to me that will take time to digest. I thought I downloaded a glossary of Quaker terms to share with you,but I got only 3 words, not the glossary. Sorry. And that was part of my reason for bothering you. My own Clermont Co,sw Ohio and Brown Co,Oh had a few Quakers, and many with Quaker roots, but only traces of Quaker meetings. Cincinnati had a Quaker meeting house by 1818,when my Mathias Fagaly's obit locates his 5th and Smith home next door to it. Warren,Clinton,Highland and other sw Ohio counties had large, active Quaker communities. Just a week ago,I rode past the west edge of the Quaker Wilmington Colege,in Wilmington, Clinton Co,Ohio .My parents, and many of my elementary school teachers had credits,and/or degrees from it. I also noted at least one small frame Quaker church on US RT 68 south of Wilmington. I know of 1 of my ancestors, the John IDEN's ,lastly of now famous Montgomery Co,Md ,who got a Quaker certificate of removal to Ohio in 1834. Perhaps Mott TITUS, and his widowed sister,Anna Titus Stone, and families got Dutchess Co,NY certificates of removal,or, at least, they came from Hempstead,Long Island Quaker roots. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! She died on 11 Nov 1900 in North Judson, Starke County, Indiana and was buried on 13 Nov 1900 in Pioneer Cemetery, North Judson, Indiana. 3. Like most of you HAVE DONE ON OCCASION,I deleted an Email I was going to reply to. Bethel was never in Brown Co. However,John Frazee, who m a Shipman, lived 4 miles east of BETHEL, and just in Brown Co,as created in 1818. He was about the nw most farm in Clark township,Brown Co then. The Sanford 1st name was used in that neighborhood. I can remember Sanford,or Sant, Leonard in Bethel in 1955. 4 townships nearly corner at John Frazee's. Clark and Pike of Brown Co,and Williamsburg and Tate [Bethel] of Clermont. Jasper Shotwell, and the Colthar's,Meeker's,Hunt's,Church's,Earhart's, Moyer's, Ogden's et al lived nearby and mostly Jerseymen like the Frazee and SHIPMAN'S, ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 1. [OhBrown] Wilks family
    2. Meg Wilkinson
    3. I am trying to find informaton about the Wilkes (Wilks) family and Perkins family. Miles Wilks amd Maria Perkins were married in Brown County 10 Nov 1836. They are listed in the 1850 Census for Lewis Tsp. along with two children, Leander and Emma. In the 1860 census Maria is listed with the two children. Then in 1870 Leander is shown with Maria and his wife and son. I am guessing Miles died sometime between 1850 and 1860. Leander served in the 188th Ohio Volunteers. If anyone has information about these people, I would appreciate hearing from you...

    3. Judy, Thanks for the added information. I was particularly interested in this marriage because of the Frazee connection. I have three John Frazees in my FTW, but he doesn't match any of them. I was also interested in the Sarah Fry connection, in case she is related to Sybilla Frye, the wife of Michael Pence, an early settler in Adams Co. Whether the information you provided will help or not, it's too soon to say, but t hey could be pieces of the puzzle. 1. [OhBrown] Re: Taylor marriages in Brown Co.
    2. Sharon, Both of the following entries in the Brown Co. marriage records give his name as William P. Taylor. Family records say the P. stands for Parker. His first wife, Sarah Frazee, was previously married to John Frazee. She was the daughter of John Derry and Anna Rardin. According to family information, Sarah is buried in the Warner Cemetery with other Derrys, although no marker is present for her. Sarah and William had 3 children: John C. Taylor, Robert Hilgrove Taylor, and Sarah Taylor Leeds. (Sarah and Robert were named in John Derry's will, their grandfather.) William P. Taylor and Sarah Fry/Frye were the parents of 4 children: William Taylor, Katherine Taylor Davidson, James P. Taylor, and Mary Elizabeth Taylor. William P. Taylor and 5 of his children are buried in the New Harmony Cemetery. Hope this helps. -Judy Derry Mahoney In a message dated 10/1/2002, J & S Mills <[email protected] > William Taylor to Sarah Frazee on 2 Nov 1836 by P L Wilson JP E-37 > > Wm P Taylor to Sarah Fry lic F-166 and return G-113 Jan 1843 by Wm Thompson > JP

    1. [OhBrown] Maplewood Cemetery visit
    2. Doug Gordon
    3. I finally visited Maplewood Cemetery this week. It was raining lightly both days (tail end of Isadore), but I was moderately successful. My first observation is that the graves in the old section of the cemetery are in really bad shape. Many are of that white marble that tends to dissolve over the years, and especially in acid rain. Many of these are now totally unreadable. Most of the gravestones are also obscured by a heavy growth of green moss. All in all, not good for research. I also think that if someone attempted to do a "reading" of all the graves in this part of the cemetery that it would be a very difficult task. The city offices were very helpful as they do have books that document the purchase of the gravesites. However, these only show the name of the person who bought the plot. They said that they don't know who is actually buried there because those books were lost in a flood some years ago. I also wonder if the cemetery itself used to be flooded once in a while -- that could be another reason for the poor condition of the older graves. Using the information from the books and a map of the cemetery, I was able to find the gravesite and a knocked-down monument from one of the families that I was looking for. So at least my visit was successful to this extent. I was unable to find graves for some other people that I was looking for who died in Ripley between about 1870 and 1900. Were there any other public cemeteries in Ripley at that time? Any idea of other cemeteries to check out? Doug Gordon
