Greetings List: Its pretty sketchy information that I have -- Would someone with an 1860 Census kindly lookup Eliza Evans, approx. 25 years of age living in possibly Greentownship at the time of the Brown County census was taken. I'm sorry about the less than complete information, I am having trouble pinning down exactly who her parents are and who she may have been living with at the time. My appreciation Micheal Mathews
Dale I have a William HALL who is listed in the 1860 and 1870 census of Ripley, Ohio. He is listed as 50 in 1960 and is a boat builder. He enlisted in Company G, 182 Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was mustered out 7 July 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. He died in Brown County Ohio on 5 April 1878. I don't know the name of his first wife, but he married Rose Ellen Degman, my great grandmother.(her second marriage) 22 February 1857. The 1860 census lists the following : William Hall age 50 boat builder. Rose Ellen (Degman) Hall age 32 Housewife. Julia Degman age 18 Laura Degman age 16 James H. age 14 John P. age 12 Sylvester Howard age 9 (my grandfather) Alexander Hall age 25 Engineer George Hall 14 Lucy Hall age 12 Ann age 9 Rachel age 7 Martha E. age 3 Apparently they had another child together (Thomas). He published his History of Ohio shortly afterwards. Then later, in the 1880s, he revisited each county and updated all of his previous notes and made many, many drawings. He then almost totally re-wrote the entire book and republished it in 1886 in a two-volume set containing nearly 1000 pages. He has general history chapters and then he has a separate chapter devoted to each of the 88 counties in Ohio. The Ottawa County Historical Museum has reprints of each of the county chapters as well as several other publications and used books. Please email the Museum or Curator for more information. Thank you and happy hunting to all! Vicki Ashton, Curator Ottawa County Historical Museum [email protected] [email protected]
Which Brown County court facility might have the clerk of Franklin Township's records? (the Village of Arnheim is in Franklin Twp, correct?) Do township clerk's records still exist? I remember that the first time I visited the Brown County court facility in Georgetown, I visited a room which was full of old court books. I think that I did see some guardianships there. I do not remember the address of this facility. Also, is there a telephone number for this place? Thank you Buffy

Does anyone know whether there were any orphanages or children's homes in the mid-1850s in Brown and Clermont County? To find out about how my great-grandmother, Catherine Berst (whose father, Jacob, was a resident of Miami Twp in Clermont County, was placed as an indentured servant with the Ludwig Braun/Louis Brown family of Arnheim in Brown County, I am "studying" The Revised Statutes of Ohio by Curwen, which provide insight about the law as it stood in 1854 with regard to "orphaned" or unwanted children. I am just starting to investigate this, but so far, it seems that many children were placed in indenture after first being placed in an orphanage or children's home. I believe Catherine Berst was sent away when her father remarried in 1854. She was enumerated with the Braun/Brown family in Arnheim in Brown County by 1860. Have not found any probate records in Brown or Clermont pertaining to this. Thanks, Buffy

The Vital Records of Dartmouth Massachusetts to the Year 1850, Volume I–Births, published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society Boston, Massachusetts (1929), available on microfilm from LDS Family History Centers, lists the following: Howland, John, son of Nathaniel [church record, records of the Society of Friends, Dartmouth monthly meeting], April 14, 1687 Howland, John, son of John and Mary, [church record, records of the Society of Friends, Dartmouth monthly meeting], Nov. 28, 1719 Howland, John, son of John and Deborah, Feb. 16, 1755 Howland, Thomas, son of John and Marcy, Oct. 10, 1794. >From Volume II–Marriages (1930): John of Dartmouth and Mary Cook, daughter of John of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, 2nd day, 8th month, 1712 John, son of John and Mary of Dartmouth, and Deborah Shepherd, daughter of John and Dorcas of Dartmouth, 5th day, 12th month "called February," 1745-6 [church record, records of the Society of Friends, Dartmouth monthly meeting] The history of Byrd Township (from the Brown County, Ohio, Rootsweb site) lists John Howland and his family among the early settlers and also indicates that those who served in the Revolutionary War and are buried in Brown County include John Howland, buried in Liberty Cemetary (presumably the third John, born 1755). The 1850 census for Kenosha County, Wisconsin, Pleasant Prairie township includes Thomas Howland, farmer, age 55, born MA, whose three oldest sons (ages 28, 26, and 23) were born in Ohio. Thomas Howland's oldest daughter, Ruby (born in Indiana) was my great grandmother. Ruby met and married her husband, John Sauber, an immigrant from Luxembourg, in Wisconsin. They later moved to California. Both of them are buried in Chico, Butte County, California.
