Robert, The GAR no longer exists since the last Union Soldier died many years ago. The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War is today what has become of the GAR. Here is a link to their web site, http://www.suvcw.org/ and a link to the women's auxiliary, www.asuvcw.org . Membership in the SUVCW or ASUVCW is open to anyone who is a direct or collateral descendant of a Union Soldier. If you are searching for GAR records, you could try the state library or local or state historical society. If you need a Civil War pension from the National Archives, you should send for it as soon as possible. The copy cost for a full pension record is going up soon from the current $37 to $125 http://genealogyblog.com/national-archives-of-the-usa/nara-proposes-new-and-much-higher-mail-order-rates-5862 Hope this helps!
