    3. Obviously, nicknames are a problem for all of us trying to untangle old families! I was recently told that "Nancy" was a common nickname for Anne or Anna - I'd never have thought of that, but it sure helped me out in sorting out a marriage relationship. As to Nellie, sometimes I think people just used it as a name in itself - and often as a nickname for Helen, too. Joanne Gaudio

    3. A Virginia ancestor of mine, Anne Jett Rollow 1759-1830 - was called Nancy....even in her obit...so, when searching for an Anne, don't neglect checking out any Nancys you find. My husband's half sister is named just plain Nellie....no nickname.
