    3. Cindy- Most "undertakers" began as the cabinet or furniture makers in the early years of Belmont County. Undertakers went to the home to prepare the bodies and he was not usually called for sometime because they wanted to make sure the person was indeed dead. There was a great fear of being buried alive.Embalming was not common until after 1900. Many times families prepared their own for burial.Funeral services were held in the home. Funeral homes add a new name each time there is a new owner. It might start out as Riley Funeral Home then when Mr. Harris takes over the business it is Riley-Harris and maybe later Riley-Harris-Emerson. I believe it is a rule they keep the last two or three names. So over the generations, it will change many times. If the business remained in the same family,it would have the original name.Wilson and Son in Bridgeport,Ohio for example and I do not know how long they have been in business. In Barnesville Ohio, there are two old cemeteries which the city maintains. They think there are two because in 1858 when they began,it was the custom to bury the dead east to west. That is how it was done in Northern Cemetery in Barnesville. However in Southern Cemetery, the lots are laid out in a circle over the entire cemetery. My own ancestors in that cemetery are buried north to south! It is a very interesting subject, but one whose customs have changed over the years. nfogle@columbus.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <ohbelmon-request@rootsweb.com> To: <ohbelmon@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2007 3:01 AM Subject: OHBELMON Digest, Vol 2, Issue 97 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1.
