MD, on 22 Aug 1832 to Jacob and Sarah (BROWN) ELY. The family moved to Morristown, Belmont Co. when he was 3 months old. He began studying medicine when age 17 with Dr. C. SCHOOLEY, then of Martin's Ferry, finishing in 3 yrs. He then began teaching until 1856 when he began the practice of medicine in Somerton, Belmont Co. He also attended lectures in the early part of 1862 at the medical college of Ohio in Cincinnati, graduating the following June. He was commissioned assistant surgeon of the 126th O.V.I. Nov. 18, 1862 and on Feb. 8, 1864, became surgeon of the regiment. On Apr. 21, 1864, he was commissioned assistant surgeon , United States volunteers after passing the exams of the U.S. board of examiners in Washington DC. Due to the inauguration of the Wilderness Campaign , he resolved to hold this commission and remain with his regiment. Upon the arrival of the army at Cold Harbor, he was assigned at the depot field hospitals at White House, VA. These hospitals were later moved to City Point, VA. He was on duty there with the 5th and 6th Army Corps Hospital. On Dec. 22, 1864 he was placed in charged of the Cavalry Corps Hospital. In Jan. 1865 he was placed in charge of the 6th Army Corps Hospital and he remained there until after Lee's surrender. He was then ordered to duty at Camp Dennison Hospital June 1865 under Dr. McDERMOT, surgeon U. S. volunteers. On the following Aug. 12, he was ordered to take charge of the City General Hospital at Indianapolis IN where he remained until he was mustered out Oct. 16, 1865. He returned to Barnesville on Nov. 7, 1865. In 1868 he recieved a brevet promotion from the U.S. government and was appointed United States Examining Surgeon for pensions, a position which he still holds.
