Hiland came to Belmont Co. with his father, William BOLON and family in 1813 from Loudon Co., VA. Margaret BOLON d. in 1876 age 68. Their children were: James m. to Mary J. LANE; John C. m. to Marian B. SHOTWELL; De Witt C. m. to Sarah COLE; William (deceased); Thomas (deceased); and Ellis (deceased). John C. was a farmer prior to joining the army. In Oct. 1861 he enlisted in Co. D, 43d Reg., O.V.I., promoted to sergeant, then to 1st lieutenant in 1864 of Co. C, 60th Reg., O.V.I.; was wounded in May 1864 (lost his left leg) and discharged in Nov. of that year. From 1866 to 1869 he was recorder of Belmont Co. In 1869, he was appointed U.S. gauger and inspector and served 7 yrs.
