Pike Island ( around Yorkville,Ohio was built in the 60's maybe and the Hannibal dam was built in the 70's I remember when the Pike Island wasn't there. and the Hannibal dam wasn't completed yet when I graduated from River High school in 72 but they were working on it. My aunt lived in Warrenton and I remember when they tore up the road to make for the back waters. Not a direct date of completion but gives you an idea. Warrenton was at one time bigger than Rayland but floods destroyed the town over the years the flood of '36 finally did it in. My son and I have been looking for a view of Warrenton when it was in its heyday but we still haven't found it. Found Tiltonsville and Rayland pictures. When were the dams built? My parents used to row a boat across the river from West Wheeling to Wheeling. That would have been in the forties. Were the dams built after that? Susan
Several folks have referred to the terrible flood of 1936, and I had ancestors in Belmont Co. who passed on stories of that disaster. For those who lived in the Ohio Valley (some of my relatives lived in Cabell Co, WV and Lawrence Co., OH), it was the flood of 1937 that was so devastating. The Ohio River has some history, that's for sure!
