Hi I have just found this on Ancestry.com about the Nottingham Quakers in Cecil County, Maryland, and wonder if someone who is conversant with Quaker abbreviations and the dating system they used can translate it for me. "Comment: rocf Plaistow MM, in Old England, 15-6-1747, dtd 10-1mo (Mar) 1746/7, recommending him as brought up in the Truth; he was apptd Overseer for Deer Creek Mtg, 20-6-1748; he was gct "to Friends in London, England", 21-10-1752, he intending a sojourn there; he was rocf Davonshire MM, Essex, England, 16-6-1753, dtd 4-4-1753. He was apptd Elder 17-7-1756." I can tell that he arrived in Maryland in 1746/47 from a place known as Plaistow. Then he apparently returned to England, I guess in 1752. While there he apparently became associated with the Davonshire Quakers, from which he returned to the Deer Creek, Harford County, Maryland Quakers in 1753. Given that I don't know the abbreviations (I can guess at a few) I would really be grateful for a translation of them and an explanation of the dating system. Perhaps even better would be the addition of a URL for a site that would explain them all to me. Thanks in advance Bill Dalton
Bill, Go to quaker.org website, it'll help you with the abbreviations and other questions. As a bit of background, when a Quaker moved to another area they were not, automatically accepted into another monthly meeting....they had to bring with them a certificate from the meeting they belonged (rocf), that was sort of a letter that said they were a member in good standing. (appd isn't included in this list, but it simply means appointed.)
