Hi, I am going to be in Belmont, Ohio in about a month and would like some guidance in my research. I am looking for the Thomas Sinclair and Margaret Duncan family. They were married in 1823 in Belmont Co., and are in the 1830 US Census for St. Clairsville, Belmont Co., with 4 children. Thomas died in 1837 and I found Margaret Sinclair alone in the 1840 US Census for Town of Jacoburgh, Smith Twp., Belmont Co. I found a Thomas Sinclair buried in St. Clairsville Cem. I have some probates records of Thomas which gives Margaret and children, but no names of children. I could not find Margaret after that. I have an Elizabeth Ann Sinclair born Nov. 26, 1826, that married Samuel Francis in 1846 in Muskingum Co., Ohio. They are my G-Grandparents. I am sure that Thomas and Margaret Sinclair are her parents, but need proof. I think that Thomas Sinclair parents was William and Elizabeth Sinclair, but no proof. What I need is where can I search in Belmont Co., to find the names of their children, and more information on the family. Are there any school records, adaption or guardianship records that I might have the children names and where would they be? I also need to know where there is a camp grounds in Belmont Co., to park a trailer for a few days? I will thank you for any information that you can give me. Richard Swank in So., California
if you do a google.com and use "campgrounds" +belmont county ohio as your subject, you'll find several lists. I looked at early tax records and find 3 different Sinclairs in 1806 - William, George, and James. In 1810, the following with their township of residence; George Richland twp James " James Washington Wm Richland The names of children are included few places, really.....wills (which you've explored?), newspaper obituaries also spring to mind. If you have wills then you have death dates, so see about a death certificate (possibly a child gave the info, and their name will be included)...the gen. library in the St. Clairsville Library, across the street from the courthouse, has many old newspapers on film...and, with some death dates to work with, read the local newspaper. (I'm sure you know, though, that in earlier times obits were not free, but paid for by the family, and many folks chose not to incur an extra expense, so lots left no obits...but, if they did, they are often a wealth of family info.) Guardian records are in Probate court records (at the courthouse), but you'll need dates to look for them....I'm pretty sure there isn't a name index to use....Forget school records, I'm afraid. That leaves church records, and those are a hit or miss proposal at best. But, if you know their religious preference, I'm sure you'll find books of church records at the library. ` I checked in the CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF BELMONT COUNTY, but found nothing of any help. The court house records don't contain any info on a marriage between Thomas and Margaret.....or a William Sinclair and Elizabeth.
