Barb: I checked the Belmont County marriages from 1803-1890 and could find no reference to the surname you are researching. I also checked the census for 1860 and 1870 and here's what I found: RICHLAND TWP. - ST. CLAIRSVILLE 107-117 G. G. NEISWANGER 25 OH Livery Mary N. 22 OH Keep House Thomas J. 1 OH Ann HANIGAN 25 OH Serve Israel YOUMAN 32 OH Hostler This is from the 1860 census. I realize that it's not exactly the same surname, but it was so close that I thought I'd include it. ______________________________ In the 1870 census I found a couple of references to a surname spelling that is close. BELLAIRE CITY - PULTNEY TWP. 338-335 James MC ELWEE 40 IRE Coal Miner Elizabeth 40 IRE Keep House Mary HENNEHAN 13 OH Winnie MURPHY 51 IRE 394-391 James HENNEHAN 45 IRE Laborer Mary M. 45 IRE Bridget 14 WV Margaret 13 WV James 10 WV Thomas 9 WV Ellen 11 WV William 6 WV Anne 3 OH Catharine 1 OH _____________________________ I am researching the surname ALTHAR (with 20 variant spellings) in Belmont County, OH and Greenbrier County, WV. I am also researching FOREMAN, FLESHMAN, and VANDAL in OH and WV. So, if you happen to stumble across any information, I'd sure appreciate it if you'd send it my way. I'll be in Greenbrier County (Lewisburg), WV on Aug. 5-6 for the FLESHMAN family reunion. That is my ggggrandmother's line and I'll be meeting a whole bunch of "cousins" for the first time. We're having dinner in the Old Stone Church. Are you familiar with that? Since I'll be coming from MI, I have no idea where a good place to stay would be or where to go to do any research. Any suggestions? Would you please be so kind to look in your Belmont marriage book and tell me if the surname Hanifan/Hanifin/Hannifin appears there? We know some of our family left Randolph Co. and went to Ohio about 1870. Once I can find the county, I could do my own research. The surname is not a common one. Many thanks and if I can look for anything here in WV for you, I get to the archives in Charleston every couple of months for a half to full day. Barb
