I JUST SIGNED ON TODAY. A RELATIVE, JOHN KNIGHT, WAS A RAILROAD ENGINEER WHO WAS BORN IN BELMONT COUNTY, OHIO, ABOUT 1850 AND DIED ABOUT 27 FEB 1885 IN DECATUR, ILL., AS THE RESULT OF INJURIES HE RECEIVED IN A TRAIN WRECK. HIS OBIT MENTIONED THAT HIS BODY WAS TAKEN TO HIS OLD HOME TOWN OF LLOYDSVILLE FOR BURIAL. HE LEFT A WIDOW MARY AND TWO CHILDREN. WOULD ANYONE KNOW WHERE JOHN KNIGHT IS BURIED EXACTLY? Knight, John (very, very, very old stone) Knight, Rebecca (very, very old stone - illegible) Knight, Rebecca 1837 age 23 w/o John Also in the book is: Pultney Twp. Pioneers M.M. KNIGHT D. S. b. 1847, son of Thomas and Nancy of Greene Co., PA. Came to this township and m. in 1874 Emma LINGO, dau. of Jesse LINGO. Boston Christian Church Cemetery - Somerset twp, - At the northwest edge of town across from an old church (1968) Knight, James 1858 age 22 s/o J. and N. Mead Twp. - Knight Private Cemetery - Near a township road off State Route 7 established 1832; .009 acres Knight, Thomas - War of 1812 BTW, most of the readings done for this book were for people born before 1840. So that John Knight in the Lloydsville Cemetery is prob. not your John...I don't think the stone would have looked that old as described. Could this be John W.'s family? In the 1850 Belmont Co. census transcribed by Wes Cochran Richland Twp. 436-444 Selphen (Stephen?) Knight 35 PA Blacksmith Suzannah 42 OH Joseph 5 OH Abagaile 3 OH William 2 OH Would John's middle name be William? There is an explosion of Knights in Belmont Co. in the 1860 census. (Wes Cochran's transcription) Richland Twp. - City of St. Clairsville 597-605 Stephen Knight 41 PA Blacksmith Jane 36 PA Joseph 15 OH Abel 13 OH William 11 OH Bailey 10 OH And then there is a John W. Richland Twp. - City of St. Clairsville 651-659 Thomas White 61 VA Farmer Sarah 51 VA Isaac 20 OH John W. Knight 15 OH Mary Ollon 20 OH Perhaps Sarah is his mother and Thomas his step-father? Or he could be their grandson. I could not find a marriage of a Thomas White to a Sarah Knight in the marriage records I have for Belmont Co. In the 1870, John W. is not around...but the Stephen Knight family is: (Also from Wes Cochran's transcription) Richland Twp. 67-67 Jacob Neff 63 OH Farmer Mary 63 OH Keep House Lucinda 20 OH Mary 19 OH Jacob Day 10 OH William Knight 21 OH Farm Laborer 108-108 Stephen Knight 54 PA Blacksmith Jane 44 PA Keep House Sarah Rose 80 PA No occupation 126-126 William King 29 OH Farmer Emeline 21 OH Keep House James 1 OH Bailey Knight 20 OH Farm Laborer I think Stephen married 2 times as taken from Wes Cochran's "Belmont Co., OH Marriages" series: Stephen R. Knight m. Susan Bailey 11 Apr 1843 Stephen R. Knight m. Jane Rose 14 Oct 1857 Thomas White was still alive during the 1870 census, but his wife is gone. Is there anything with this family that seems to come together with John W.? What was his wife's Mary maiden name. I wonder about that Mary Neff that was in the family he was enum. with. Perhaps they went to IL and he followed cause of Mary. I found no marriage for John W. or William in Belmont Co. to a Mary. There was a marriage of a John W., but that was in 1885 AFTER your John W. died. This is from "Genealogical Records in Belmont Co., OH" Vol. 5 (GRBC) From the Belmont Chronicle 12 Mar 1885 John W. Knight of Decatur IL, born and raised in Loydsville, d. on Feb 27th from injuries received in Jan in a collision on the Wabash RR upon which he was working as an engineer. He learned the machinist trade in the B. & O. shops in Bellaire. He had lived in the west about 15 years. Maybe there is something else you can use in that obit. He probably left Richland Twp. just before the 1870 census, so perhaps the John W. I found was he. Have you checked out the 1870 IL census to see if he was on it? -- Bonnie Burkhardt <burkhard@flash.net> <bburkhardt@juno.com>
