I have been sorting out the Baily/Bailey's of Belmont Co., OH for many years using LDS films, Belmont County Genealogical Society publications, Quaker Records, and correspondence. My Baily.....note the lack of "e", this is a hint for any Baily/Bailey researcher to pay attention to.........LEVI W. BAILY b. c1824 St. Clairsville, Belmont, OH presumed by me to be the son of William and Phebe (Woodward) Baily.............Now, your HAMILTON BAILEY......I have information received in 1995 (per post mark) that indicates the following: Hamilton Bailey b. 1804-1862 is the s/ Joseph [1764-1840 b. Chester Co., PA] and Susanna (Hedges {1774-1844 b. Woodboro (Frederick) MD d/o Joseph and Mary (Wood) Hedges) BAILEY. Hamilton BAILEY (per info sent to me) m. Elizabeth Wiley. He was living at Centreville at the time of his death in 1862. I pass this data along for your further research. I have not researched or documented any of the above data. Once I am confident I can eliminate a line, I do so; consequently, the above Bailey line has no link to mine. I hope this helps you. If nothing else, you have several names to research for further information. Harriet M. I've been researching my own Baily family, that emigrated to Chester County, PA, in the late 1600s. The name is spelled, in records, as Baily, Bailey and Baley, depending on who was writing the records, and often interchangeably....thus, if I disregarded any spelling I perceived as 'wrong', I'd sure have missed a lot. So, if you're wise, you'll research any and every spelling of the name you come upon, just in case.....remember, it's not necessarily how the family spelled their name, but how the clerk writing the record, thought the name was spelled. Absolutely the ONLY way to know how a person signed their name is to see a signature, which is, unfortunately, as scarce as hens' teeth" I have one family will, that spells the same woman's name 3 completely different ways....I reckon the clerk just couldn't decide HOW the name was spelled! I've looked in my Chester Co records, and unfortunately, while I find a good many Joseph Bailey/Bailys, none with a son named Hamilton... As you have a date for the death of Joseph...1840...why not see if Records and Archives in Chester Co has a will on record for him (my CD of PA wills ends, unfortunately, with 1825). If so, it should contain the name of any children he had...hopefully, Hamilton.
