A Virginia ancestor of mine, Anne Jett Rollow 1759-1830 - was called Nancy....even in her obit...so, when searching for an Anne, don't neglect checking out any Nancys you find. My husband's half sister is named just plain Nellie....no nickname. Sandra " I was recently told that "Nancy" was a common nickname for Anne or Anna - I'd never have thought of that, but it sure helped me out in sorting out a marriage relationship. "
Obviously, nicknames are a problem for all of us trying to untangle old families! I was recently told that "Nancy" was a common nickname for Anne or Anna - I'd never have thought of that, but it sure helped me out in sorting out a marriage relationship. As to Nellie, sometimes I think people just used it as a name in itself - and often as a nickname for Helen, too. Joanne Gaudio
...and yet another twist -- I have a friend who has always been called Nell, but in fact it is her middle name, a surname "de Nelle" that has been passed down for a number of generations in her family. There are always at least a couple of Nells in each generation, but none of them actually have it as their first name. Totally confusing for descendants if not known. Nancy
I'm a Nancy who is really an Ann. It has caused no end of confusion in my life, even my brother doesn't know my real name! Look in any name book, it will tell you that Nancy is a diminutive of Ann -- you can see how Nan grew into Nancy. I think back in the day, you would never have had a child Nancy and another child Ann in the same family--my mother was astounded and horrified the first time she heard That one. I once shared the Nancy/Ann bit with another list and a woman wrote to me with a Eureka moment -- she could never find her Swedish ancestor Ann (whatever that would have been in that language) in the censuses over here, because she used the name Nancy in the USA. nancy aka ann
My Nellie was Avanella, sometimes misspelled as Ava Nella or Avonella. Hello, Try looking at Fannie's neighbors in the census for someone she could have married. Then check the census for later dates & see if you find her married to someone from that area. Just a shot in the dark but I found a family member that way. She did marry the neighbor boy. Kay ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
I missed the original question somehow. I have a limited amount of Armstrongs in my family....mostly from Wood County, West va. I have gone through the three marriage books that take us through1890 and I don't see anything that fits. I tried just using female Armstrong-but there weren't any marriages in the 1865-1875 range and certainly nothing with Fannie or Ella or Elisabeth... I check what limited obituaries I have and the only Armstrong I had was a Mrs.John Armstron 10/17/1918 ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
It was state law that deaths be recorded from 1867 onward.....and, there is a death index you can check at the online Ohio Historic Society site.. http://www.ohiohistory.org/ however, there is no statewide index to death records from 1867 through 1908, so death records of those dates will be found in the county probate court where the person died....you'll need to check at the county level. Marriage records before 1948 are also housed in the probate court records of the county where they took place. I have a CD of Ohio courthouse records, but it stops at 1850, and I honestly don't know if there is one with later marriages or not. Sandra
Thank you. I got ones from 1913 on up from Ohio State records but am lost on other. I guess then my next step would be to go to courthouse and search there. --------------------------------- Sucker-punch spam with award-winning protection. Try the free Yahoo! Mail Beta.
Does anyone have the book on Belmont Co. marriages? I am searching for the marriage of Fanny (Fannie) Ella Armstrong. In the 1860 census she was 13 and is gone in the 1870 so I really haven't much to go on. Do know she lived in Kirkwood township, Sewellsville and was the daughter of Wm. and Mercy Armstrong. Where would I start to look for deaths from the 1890's? Is there a book for those as well? I also have one other request and hope I am not making anyone upset by the questions. I have a Laney (Lanie) Armstrong in 1910 census and she is gone in the 20. I can't find her death in the Ohio death certificates so figure she died between 1910 and 1913 when this starts. She was unmarried and lived with her sister Sarah and brother William. I would like to know when she died and where buried. Thanks so much for any help you can give me. --------------------------------- Yahoo! oneSearch: Finally, mobile search that gives answers, not web links.
Might Nellie Russell's first name have been Eleanor and Nellie just a nickname? I have known Nellies who were given the birthname of Eleanor.
I sent this yesterday but it didn't arrive for some reason...so, here it is again, with additional names that Bill didn't include....all found on the OHC online death index site.
