Last Friday we drove to St Clairsville, I was looking for my great grandmothers (Ellen Pascoe) marriage license. I had the date, taken from my great grandfathers Civil War papers, 09-12-1886, Somerton, Belmont Co Ohio by Rev Edward Ellison. Of course there was nothing there, not a big surprise because I have found out that my GGF was married 5 times without the benefit of a single divorce, and in 1910 at least 4 of the wives were still alive. It probably won't help any but is there a way of tracing my GGparents through the minister who married them? Anyone know of any affiliation of Rev. Edward Ellison with any church? Jon: i am interested in your message since my wife is descended from a Lavina Barnes (b abt 1798 NC - d 1877 IL, Jasper Co.). She married a George Grove and lived in Brown County, In from the 1820's until about 1850 when they moved to Illinois. George founded Georgetown (now Bean Blossom) and ran a grist mill there. While in Indiana they had some association with a Jesse Barnes. George nearly beat him to death in some type of family argument. George was born in PA and was in central Indiana by 1820. There seem to have been several Wm Barnes included in the centennial history of Belmont County...some with different middle names; a Wm Barnes served as a school director in 1828 - Pease Twp. a Wm Barnes was one of the first trustees of the Barnesville Cemetery. There were several others who served in the War between the States, but probably too late to have been the one you seek. ----- Original Message ----- From: "genresearch62" <genresearch62@gmail.com> To: "Belmont Co. I am hoping to connect with someone related to this family. Am trying to track down parents of William's mother Laura Belle Stull Foster ( 1870-1945). William was informant for Laura's death certificate ( OHio) but did not know her parents at the time. Perhaps they are known now by someone else researching the family? Laura Belle Stull b. 1870, Middlebourne, West Va. and died 1945 Colerain, Belmont County, Ohio. She married Frank B. Foster. Lived mostly in West Va. until after her husband's death and she grew elderly. \ Other siblings of William are Lilli, Howard, Virginia, Waldo, Katherine, Charlotte, Louisa, and George. Sharon, My gg grandmother was Margaret Norman. I do not know who her parents were, but her siblings were: (with reasonable certainty) Ann who married Benjamin Pollock and lived in Belmont County for many years, Isaac, Calvin, Rachel, and Lavina who married Thomas Price. Margaret Norman married John B. Lindsay in April 1840 in Smithfield Twp. Jefferson County. I have always suspected Isaac, as well, but will be glad to share with you what I have. Wilson Funeral home in Bridgeport was originally Adolph Funeral home. Howard Wilson married one of the Adolph girls and later took over the business and it became Wilson's. It did stay in the family.and they have been in the business for a long time. Charlie Wilson, now the owner is a grandson of old Howard Wilson. I am guessing it started in the late 1800's or 1900. A Mr. Daniels also had a funeral home in Bridgeport..... Phyllis ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
Cindy- Most "undertakers" began as the cabinet or furniture makers in the early years of Belmont County. Undertakers went to the home to prepare the bodies and he was not usually called for sometime because they wanted to make sure the person was indeed dead. There was a great fear of being buried alive.Embalming was not common until after 1900. Many times families prepared their own for burial.Funeral services were held in the home. Funeral homes add a new name each time there is a new owner. It might start out as Riley Funeral Home then when Mr. Harris takes over the business it is Riley-Harris and maybe later Riley-Harris-Emerson. I believe it is a rule they keep the last two or three names. So over the generations, it will change many times. If the business remained in the same family,it would have the original name.Wilson and Son in Bridgeport,Ohio for example and I do not know how long they have been in business. In Barnesville Ohio, there are two old cemeteries which the city maintains. They think there are two because in 1858 when they began,it was the custom to bury the dead east to west. That is how it was done in Northern Cemetery in Barnesville. However in Southern Cemetery, the lots are laid out in a circle over the entire cemetery. My own ancestors in that cemetery are buried north to south! It is a very interesting subject, but one whose customs have changed over the years. nfogle@columbus.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <ohbelmon-request@rootsweb.com> To: <ohbelmon@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2007 3:01 AM Subject: OHBELMON Digest, Vol 2, Issue 97 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hello, Hoping someone will have information on what if any Funeral Homes were in Belmont County in 1864 and 1872? If so, would any still be in existence today. Thanks for the help Cindy
There are many references to different Griers in THE STORY OF BARNESVILLE, by Shepphard.....and a few in MCKELVEY'S CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF BELMONT COUNTY. If you will post some given names, and aprox. dates, I'll see if they are included. Sandra
There are many references to the Grier family in the 1908 Centennial Souvenir History of Barnesville,Ohio 1808-1908. Brothers John and Henry Grier came from Fayette Co Pa . John was to settle just east of what is now known as Barnesville in 1800.THe first election ever held in the township was at his cabin. Henry came to the area in 1806 and settled one and one half miles West of Barnesville.(section 28 of Warren Twp, Belmont Co.) The Grier family is also listed many times in the History of Barnesville Ohio by Dempsey O. Sheppard , M.D written in 1942. Both these books may still be available from a member of the Jr. Woman's Club of Barnesville. I will try to find out who is selling reprints of the books. nfogle@columbus.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <ohbelmon-request@rootsweb.com> To: <ohbelmon@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 3:01 AM Subject: OHBELMON Digest, Vol 2, Issue 95 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1.
