Dear friends, Does anyone have a list of tombstone inscriptions from East Richland M.E. Cemetery, outside St. Clairsville, that would tell me which Dents are buried there. Jean Peters kindly sent me a photo of the tombstone there of John Dent, who died March 27, 1876, but I neglected to inquire about others. John's son, George, was my great-great-grandfather; his son, Cassius M. Dent, my great-grandfather. Any help would be appreciated. Frank D. Myers fmyers@netconx.net
Alfred LAKE, was born March 14, 1821 and married Jane WATTERS on October 22, 1904. They lived in St. Clairsville, where they are buried in Union Cemetery. Their daughter, Sarah Jane LAKE, was born March 12, 1854, and married Robert L. NEWLIN, in 1877. I know much of the Newlins, but nothing of the Lake and Watter families. Sandra

I'm sure you know - but in case you don't - the Starkey family came originally from NJ, and and also were numerous in Greene Co., PA. Whether the Belmont bunch came from the Greene Co. ones, or straight from NJ, I don't know. It's just a possibility I'm throwing out. I've been working on the Greene Co. Starkeys. Barb: I checked the Belmont County marriages from 1803-1890 and could find no reference to the surname you are researching. I also checked the census for 1860 and 1870 and here's what I found: RICHLAND TWP. - ST. CLAIRSVILLE 107-117 G. G. I'll be in Greenbrier County (Lewisburg), WV on Aug. 5-6 for the FLESHMAN family reunion. That is my ggggrandmother's line and I'll be meeting a whole bunch of "cousins" for the first time. We're having dinner in the Old Stone Church. Are you familiar with that? Since I'll be coming from MI, I have no idea where a good place to stay would be or where to go to do any research. Any suggestions? Would you please be so kind to look in your Belmont marriage book and tell me if the surname Hanifan/Hanifin/Hannifin appears there? We know some of our family left Randolph Co. and went to Ohio about 1870. Once I can find the county, I could do my own research. The surname is not a common one. Many thanks and if I can look for anything here in WV for you, I get to the archives in Charleston every couple of months for a half to full day. Barb
Charlotte: Not a problem! The 1850 census I have is on a CD and are the actual images of the census pages as written by the census taker. Some of those pages and handwriting are very hard to read. I had previously looked for Sarah (page 130) and Elisabeth (page 160) and they do not appear on those pages. I suppose there could have been an error when somebody was typing up the numbers for the index. I did find the others, though. Oops, my previous message should have had as Subject--Knight Family. There was a marriage in Belmont County between Ann E. Knight and and Alfred H. Powell on 31 Aug 1865. Does anyone have more information on this couple? Where did they live?
