    3. Does anyone know how to find records of burials at this cemetery, many of the stones read by Esther Weygandt Powell in 1969 (Tombstone Inscriptions & Family Records of Belmont County, Ohio) are no longer in sight. I covered the WHOLE cemetery & looked at each stone, I need to find information of some folks that Esther could not even make out & some that were listed in book but would like to find more information than just the year of death. Anyone? My husband's great-grandfather died in Iowa. The family lived in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, but he died in Iowa and no one today seems to know what he was doing there. He was buried in Marietta. I recently found someone in Iowa who found his obituary and he did have TB. Joanne Mangilao, Guam USA

    3. On early census the term "inmate" was used to refer to a married man who did not own land, but resided in the township. However, this term was not used everywhere, and fell out of use. -----Original Message----- From: Jane Unger <janielou13@yahoo.com> To: OHBELMON-L@rootsweb.com <OHBELMON-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, October 27, 2000 3:52 PM Subject: Re: [OHBELMON-L] INMA >Greetings, >The use of the word 'Inmate' came up last week on one >of my other lists. 1. [OHBELMON-L] Re: 1910 Census use of "NR"
    2. Denny Shirer
    3. Throughout many census records including the 1910 Miracode index, the code "NR" was always used to mean "Not Reported." This could be used in any column such as name, age, birthplace etc. For all other abbreviations and a better understanding of the census there are a number of sites that give that information. Here is one that is very good: http://www.censusmicrofilm.com/intro.htm I could not find a mention in any listing of abbreviations for "NR" but a call to the local census office and a few mentions on other sites confirmed the meaning behind "NR" to in fact mean "Not Reported." It does not mean "Non-Resident" as someone had suggested. My mother was not quite one year old in the 1910 census and is the only child in her parents household to be listed as "NR" for age. She was obviously a resident and in looking at many other 1910 pages, have not seen anyone listed as anything other than a whole number for their age. They probably did this to cut down on errors. Depending on someone's handwriting, "10m" could look like "10y" so to use "NR" for anyone aged less than 1 year would be very prudent on their part. No one listed in years is accurate to a month so why should a child be any different. Hope this helps clear up the confusion. 3. Greetings, The use of the word 'Inmate' came up last week on one of my other lists. Can't find where I filed the response, but basically, inmates were simply those who were residents of the county but did not own property. Seems they could have come up with a better word. :-) Jane --- anne <abeecee@netins.net> wrote: > It may have been a TB facility...my mother and a > cousin both had TB and were > confined to a facility in Iowa City, Iowa...there > were also places called > quarantine houses..at least here they existed..if > you had measles ..you > could be taken from your home and put in one of > these houses until you were > well... > > anne > > > The total number I find is 78 and there was a Lena > M. 1. [OHBELMON-L] PICKERING Family
    2. Tracie Sheldon
    3. Hi All, I've been watching the goings on and I finally decided to jump in and see if anyone recognized my Pickering Family. Okay here is what I have: Daisy Pickering b. February 28, 1884 in Flushing, Belmont, Ohio d. January 1978 m. Frank Brown b. August 11, 1880 in Deersville, Harrison, Ohio d. March 09, 1962 in North Side Hospital, Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio. Married September 04, 1902 in Stark County, Ohio. What I'm trying to find out is that I was told Daisy's parents were Amos Pickering & Salinda (Celinda, Selinda) Jane Brock. I sent for a copy of Daisy & Frank's marriage Certificate and it lists her parents as Amos Pickering and Jennie Barney. I'm about to send for Daisy's Birth Certificate, but was wondering if any of you would happen to know any more on these families? Thanks for any help. Tracie Sheldon tsheldon@home.com

    2. The total number I find is 78 and there was a Lena M. Britton resident age 25 in Belmont Co., at the same time not in this facility so excluding her there were 77 people in this facility. Many of them were from Ireland, some from Wales and one from Russia and one from Bohemia. I have become most curious about these facilities. Does anyone know any names of others that were in Belmont Co., during this time period? Anything like poorhouses, hospitals, prisions, infirmiries. Most of these people were above 50 years old but there was a girl of 15 also. I am wondering if it might have been an asylum or something. Curious till the end. Autumn

    3. I, too, did some searches in the `1910 index and had some come up as "INMA" It could be inmate...Poor houses in Ohio were "infirmaries" and their residents were "inmates" , but I came up with so many; I'm wondering if that is not the right answer. Inmates, whether of a jail, insane asylum, infirmary, or whatever, were such a small percentage of the population. Nancy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. I'm trying yet again to find something, ANYTHING about my gr-gr grandmother, Ruth Ann Frame NEWLIN. She was married to Elisha Phipps NEWLIN, and they moved, from Chester County, PA to Colrain, Belmont co, ca 1857. Elisha died before the 1860 census, and Ruth Ann was the HOH on the 1860, living with the children. The thing that KILLS me is that her eldest 2 children, Elizabeth and Frank, both are listed on the 1850 Chester Co census, as having been born in OHIO, ca 1838.....did Ruth Ann and Elisha go to Ohio earlier, have 2 children, and then go back to Chester Co? Was Elisha married, in Ohio, first, to another woman who was the mother of these children, and who, when she died, returned to PA with their father....where he then married Ruth Ann? I am just stumped! Does anyone know of any Frames who could, possibly be related to Ruth Ann (1818-1900) in Belmont? Ruth is always listed as having been born in PA, but perhaps her parents moved to Ohio, and that was why she and her family left PA... HELP! Sandra

    1. [OHBELMON-L] Belmont County History Buffs?
    2. I have been searching through the 1910 Census looking for my great grandmother who finally showed up as one of the deceased children in her fathers will. We believe that she died about 1911 but could be wrong. However; to my question I did a search on "Lena Belmont" for anyone named Lena in Belmont County and received 292 responses many of there had individuals listed as INMA which I take as inmate then it had Lena M Britton, can anyone tell me of a prision or maybe hospital by this name. I have been working in this county for a long time and never ran on anything by this name. My great grandmother was Lena MCGILTON DENHAM as many of you know I have searched for her forever, now for my second HUGE favor. Someone out there was kind enough to send me a copy of a will for Thomas MCGILTON and I misplaced the letter that came with it, if you sent me the will please email me as I would like to thank you. Thanks Autumn
