I'm trying to find this Elizabeth Norris from this reference FTM CD 193 County and Family Histories Pennsylvania 1740-1900 History of Butler Co. Vol. 1 George CHRISTLEY was born in Lancaster Co. Pa and was the son of George and Margaret (SNYDER) CHRISTLEY. His father was a native of Germany, who immigrated to Reamstown, Lancaster, about 1760, and engaged in merchandising; he there married Margaret Snyder, to whom were born four children. Two of these, George and Margaret survived. The father died when our subject was a child, and his widow married a man named NORRIS, to whom she bore one daughter, Elizabeth. NORRIS returned to England, and was never heard of again. The mother with three children removed to Westmoreland Co. Pa. And settled in Greensburg, where she was again married to Curtis ROOK. Two sons, William and Curtis were the fruits of this union. In the "Belmont County, Ohio Marriage 1803-1849 by Wes Cochran Their are several Elizabeth Norris, does any one have the parnets of these Elizabeth Norris. Hi Listers, The other night I passed along something that was told to me by the clerks in the Belmont probate court office--that records for guardianship are handled just like adoptions--closed. I have had several messages to the fact that this is not necessarily true, and more or less substantiated by feelings about the situation. So disregard what was meant to be helpful, and if you need guardianship papers for your research---then go for it!!! :-) Sorry to have passed on erroneous info. Nancy
I am asking for my niece who is researching the DRENNAN surname. Are there any researchers in the area who are familiar with William DRENNAN who married Golda there? I am not sure of the dates but believe that he died in 1960-1970 era. Golda preceded him the 1950s. My niece can be reached at nsharper@neo.rr.com if you have any data to where with her. Thank you. The Wheeling Intelligencer-Thursday, August 9, 1906 Bridgeport MEISTER and CHURCH Discharged and O'HARE Held on Charge of Stealing Chickens Elmer MEISTER, John O'HARE, and Homer CHURCH were arrested yesterday by the police and charged with stealing chickens from John DONLEY. The young men were given a hearing last night before Mayor BRESOCK, and MEISTER and CHURCH were dismissed, and the case of O'HARE continued until 1 ten o'clock today. O'HARE admitted that he stole two chickens but not from John DONLEY, and that he intended to pay for them on Wednesday. On account of him admitting that he stole the two chickens the case was continued until today. Two Inquests Coroner Dr. A. W. DIVEN yesterday held two inquests here. The firs was that of Stephen BETTS, the miner injured by a fall of stone in the Wheeling Creek mine. The verdict was "accidental death by fall of stone due to carelessness." Dr. DIVEN had not rendered a verdict in the case of Walter GOLDEN who died from the effects of a powder explosion in the Lansing mine. In the latter case there was no witness who saw the accident, as only the two men that were injured were in the room in the mine. The explosion was due to carelessness of one of the two men. Nancy

Dave, Bonnie, and John and Patty, Thank you very much for your responses. Unfortunately, I live in California and am not currently able to get to Ohio. A WPA listing for the cemetary was mentioned. In some counties, the WPA did register all readable grave stones. It is a good possible source. Does anyone know where I might be able to find these WPA records? I am not looking for a free lookup. I will be glad to pay someone a reasonable amount to research the WPA records of the cemetary for Calvert entries. Please contact me at JCalvert@jps.net. Over the years of trying to find out more about the Calverts in Belmont, Monroe and Morgan Counties, I have been impressed with the number of kind people who have offered help. I will not single out any one person, but I would like to thank you all. Jim
Jim, According to the book "OH Cemeteries", it is located 1 mile from Centerville, off SR147 in Smith Twp. Noted as the source for this info. "WPA list" which someone might want to explain. Is the WPA list only a listing of cemeteries (as I suspect) or were there actually readings published on the WPA list? -- Bonnie Burkhardt <burkhard@flash.net> <bburkhardt@juno.com> James Calvert wrote: > Has anyone reviewed the graves in the Scatterday Cemetary. Wheeling Intelligencer August 9, 1906 VITAL AND SOCIAL STATISTICS >From the vital and social statistics compiled in the office of the Probate Judge from data furnished by the assessor we take the following figures: During the year ending March 31, last, there were 1567 births in the county; of these 837 were males and 730 females. There were 594 marriages. Death took 641, of these 353 were males and 288 females. The native born males numbered 316 and native born females 373. The largest number of foreign born persons were Germans and English came next. Persons naturalized numbered 43, of these 25 were from Austria, 5 from Russia, 3 from France, 2 from Ireland, and 2 from Italy. The others were scattered. During the year 42 letters of guardianship were issued, 68 wills were admitted to probate, 59 letters testamentary issued and 73 letters of administration issued. To the Athens Hospital 15 insane were sent and to the Columbus Hospital 13 were sent. Two persons were sent to the Reform School. Of the chief diseases there were 72 deaths due to tubercular diseases, 65 due to pneumonia, 30 to paralysis, and 74 cases of sudden death. NOTE: As I typed the above, my memory was triggered about something I learned at the courthouse in St. Clairsville, that might be of interest. My grandfather died when my father and uncle were still minors. It seems that in the past it was the custom, under such circumstances, to appoint a male guardian, even though the mother was still living. I asked about guardianship papers for such a case, and was told that they are sealed, just like adoption papers. Nancy
Thursday, August 9, 1906 FORMER COUNTY BELMONT BOY The wedding ceremony uniting Dr. Clinton M. SCATTERDAT and Miss Vivian WATT as husband and wife was performed at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 1, at the home of the bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. MOORE, by the bride's uncle, Rev. Frank C. COLVIN, of Jonesville, Michigan. The Lohengrin march was played during the ceremony by Miss Bertha HOWELL. The ceremony was wonderfully beautiful and impressive. Dr. SCATTERDAY is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. D. SCATTERDAY of Kelsey, Belmont county, widely known and highly respected people. He is a graduate of Franklin college and of the Ohio Medical University. He is located in Freeport and is having a lucrative practice in dentistry. Mrs. SCATTERDAY is the daughter of Prof. George H. WATT, Professor of Pharmacy in Washington State College at Pullman. She is a graduate of the Ohio State University and an accomplished young lady. Both are exceptionally fine young people and have the best wishes of all that life to them may be all they wish. --Freeport Press At Quaker City, Messrs C. S. and Carl WRIGHT have sold their patent rights in an oil and gas drilling machine which they invented and which is said to be a good thing, to the Standard Oil Company for a goodly sum and the Messrs. WRIGHT have been employed by the company to go to Toledo to superintend the manufacturing of the same on a large scale. D. M. McCLANAHAN, the liveryman, has purchased the outfit of Henry DUCKER, consisting of horses, rigs, and harness, and has added this to his own stable. He has also taken Mr. DUCKER into his employ. Quite a good sized crowd attended the lot sale Saturday in the Roselawn addition to St. Clairsville. Just twenty lots were sold and all brought fair prices running from $200 up to $400. This last notice seemed quite appropriate, given last weeks election--- Voters should note that in voting for county candidates there is no such thing as voting a straight ticket. Each candidate the voter wishes to vote for must be marked individually. Nancy Reynolds in TN Researching: McDONALD, WOOD, CURTIS, RYLAND, McGUIRE, RIGGS

Has anyone reviewed the graves in the Scatterday Cemetary. I have asked this question twice before and no one seems to know the location of the cemetary or who is buried there. The USGS shows a cite for the cemetary near the town of Jacobsburg. I have been told that several Calvert graves are in this cemetary. Jim

Yes, there is a place in Monroe County referred to as Little Switzerland. It is on St. Rt. 260 south of Woodsfield, Ohio. There used to be a real nice Covered bridge off the main highway. Emory L. Parker eparker03@sprynet.com Looking for Addlespurger, Hedrick,Parker,Rouse,Slonaker,Watkins
Ted, I don't know if there is an area in Belmont or Monroe called this but Sugarcreek, in Tuscarawas Co., has always been known as "Little Switzerland" because of it's many Swiss ancestors. It even resembles Switzerland a little with it's rolling hills (sorry, no Matterhorn) and the many buildings with Swiss inspired architecture. It has a rich culture steeped in Swiss traditions and is right in the heart of Amish country. Other areas may have a large Swiss population and be called this as well. I would compare it to Chinatown where when you had a large Chinese community, it was referred to as that (i.e. San Francisco and New York City). A few months back I posted a look-up request on this board for the Marriage of John S. WILLIS to Julia Ann MOWDER 16 Feb, 1838 at Dille's (Dilley's) Bottom. They were married by Vachel Hall. The marriage had to be proven by witnesses since the marriage was never recorded in Belmont Co. This was done so Julia could recieve a pension after the Civil War. John died during the war. Witnesses were Daniel WILLIS and his wife Diana, maiden name unknown. John S. Willis and Julia had children,Daniel Milton, Elizabeth "Betsy J." who m Francis Circle, Benjamin,Emeretta, James, Ida, Nancy, and John McLellan. I need any information on any of these people, also on Henry Willis Sr b abt 1795 as I suspect he is the father of John S. Thank you, Martha Cross Sargent
I am looking for the possible burial places and also later generations of Lora H. Moore b. 1872 (Jefferson co, OH) married to Jennie Davis b. 1873..(Wezel co, WV). At the time of their marriage in 1894, it states that Lora resided in St. Clairsville, OH...and family stories say they lived in St. Clairsville after their marriage....I looked up 1910 Ohio (free) census and found Lora and a young son and daughter listed in Belmont co....(I can't find the paper copy I had made at the time..) Jennie was not listed on that census, but family say she was alive, living in St. Clairsville in the 1930's..... A sister of Jennie's, Cassandra Davis b. 1862 (re 1870 wetzel co census) may have married Amos Bonifant in 1877, Belmont, OH....(Wetzel co marriage book).I am not sure if this cassandra (cassa) is mine..she would have been very young at the time.....I have had no luck in my searches for Cassandra beyond this marriage record possibility thus far. Any help with these two families would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. barbara hoehn ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Pam, You need to include dates when posting family data.....we have no way of knowing where to look for these people without some sort of time frame. Approximate dates will do, but dates of some sort should always be included in a query. I have lots of Ohio resources, but don't know if they will be of any help, without knowing when your family was in Belmont. -----Original Message----- From: Pam Mike <pam_mike@looksmart.com> To: OHBELMON-L@rootsweb.com <OHBELMON-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, November 09, 2000 3:49 PM Subject: [OHBELMON-L] New to list >Hello list! >My name is Pamela Biggins Mike.
