Although I find no mention of your, specific McCarty, I would imagine that he is related to the following McCartys. Also, for those of you coming to a dead end with your families. be aware of the fact that many of the Quaker families in Belmont County had their origins in Chester County, PA. For example, Cope, mentioned below, is a very familiar Chester County Quaker name, and was in PA in the late 1600s, not long after Penn's arrival. I, myself, could not find the origins of my Belmont county Newlin family, until I traced them to Chester co....so, keep it in mind! I have a rootsweb list for Old Chester & Delaware Cos, and many area resources, so if I can be of help, email me. Sandra . J.F. McCarty of Martin's Ferry, a well known inventor, was born in Colerain Twp, of Belmont co, 11-15-1858, and a son of Ezra and Emily Cope McCarty. Ezra's father was John McCarty, a native of Scotland. At an early date he came to the US, and in the course of time became one of the pioneers of the new state of Ohio. He married an English woman and they both lived to an advanced age, he being over 90 at the time of his death. Ezra resided in Belmont co, and learned the carpenter's trade, and followed that occupation for many years. He finally rose to the position of contractor, and many buildings, including houses and barns in Belmont co.,, are the results of his handiwork or supervision. He died in the spring of 1898. He married Emily Cope, daughter of George and Hanna Cope of Farmington, colerain. Mr. Cope was a teacher for some years, and later engaged in the grocery business. Hannah was a Quaker. -----Original Message----- From: Mary K Hurley <mkhurley@worldnet.att.net> To: Sandra Ferguson <ferg@intelos.net> Date: Saturday, January 13, 2001 10:24 AM Subject: Re: [OHBELMON-L] Centenial History of Belmont >Sandra, >My grandfather's family, believed to also be Scotch-Irish, is supposed to >have come from VA to Colerain. Tim- I have a photocopy of one of my ancestors papers filed when he became a citizen in 1840 in Belmont County Ohio. Evidently he appeared before the clerk and completed some papers because this page that I have says p. 4-A at the top. It is a statement of his length of time in the US and also a witness by others of his character and his renouncing any political ties to any other country. And the bottom line indicates that he was admitted by the Belmont court as a citizen on the day he filed. I do not know if there are other papers or what they may have been. I am looking for any information which someone might have regarding a BARRON family which lived in Belmont County in the 1840's. The records I have are quite sparse, but they keep popping up in my CAPSTACK/ICK family history and I'm hoping leads about them may help me track my ancestors down. What I already know: David BARRON married my ancestor, Elizabeth CAPSTICK (in the record as KAPSTICK), in 1840. A William BARRON testified for her son Jonathan's citizenship in 1849 (see also my other post!). William of Washington Township (1850), who had a wife Sarah, at least applied for and probably received a civil war pension, although I don't know what unit he was in (it wasn't the 157th OVI). Interestingly, a Sarah BARRON appears in Bridgeport (p.84) of the 1840 census. That's all I can tell you -- can anyone help me out? -- Tim Capstack laurantim@earthlink.net
