I too have been helped by the newspaper information. I happened to ask her directly for anything on Maring and Bruce, and she sent the info directly to me. If anyone is interested in an obit for Edith Maring, please let me know and I'll send it to you. I certainly want to add my thanks for her time and effort in supplying this old history of Belmont County! Mary Hart >
This took several papers to print, it is an epic and covers Barnesville's History from 1800-1886. There are hundreds of names, there are also whole articles devoted to certain merchants. It is broken up into three time periods. I had a hard time trying to copy this and then cutting it into readable strips (it was a logistical nightmare because you had to line up the copies once made, tape them and then cut them-sometimes columes were missing, etc.) Does anyone know if this is on any of the web sites? I hate to duplicate someones work or bore half the group. This would take several emails but it does have good early history and lots of names. The Official Title was BARNESVILLE From 1800 to 1886 The Men Who Conquered the Wilderness And Laid the Foundation of the Town A COMPLETE HISTORY Of the Events of Seventy-Five Years Three Periods of Progression Hamlet, Village and Town From the Log Hut to the Business Palace The Old Town Described and It's Business' Located THE MEN OF THE DAY Who Direct our Vocations and Concerns Sketches of Leading Business Houses And The Work Done by our People Attend the Efforts of the Live Business Men of Barnesville The Enterprise Continues its Work of Local Chronicler By Publishing a Graphic Sketch of the Past and Present Status of the Town (This was the entire front page of the first edition) -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. That gives you some idea of the verbage of the articles. I have mounted these clippings in a spiral notebook and the book if filled, so this is no small undertaking. I propose to list the articles with the names involved, then if you are interested, you email me and I will send the article to you scanned as well as I can. For those of you with microfilm access, this is from Roll #28993 the Barnesville Enterprise. Bonnie, let me know if this is not acceptable otherwise I will forge ahead. Pam

Hi Everyone, I enjoy reading the newspaper articles. I learn so much about history, the people, and the events that took place. I even find a surname of mine mentioned sometimes (if I'm lucky.) If information were shared privately, I would miss out on a surname of mine. Keep up the good work! P.S. Tim, why didn't you send your request to be "unsubscribe" privately? The sharing of information from ANY source - whether reference books or newspapers, is what these lists are all about. They in NO WAY are SPAM. When we send information with genealogical data to individuals rather than everyone, we limit it to just one person - while, if we post it, it will then be available for everyone on the list to use, plus placed in the list archives for others to find and use later. The 'name of the game' is to get the most information to the most people, and generous folks like our fellow list member EBBurcher are to be thanked for taking the time to share their info with us.... I wonder, if you don't believe newspaper obits, marriages, births, area students of another era, etc, are valuable, what on earth DO you feel is worth sharing? Many may be interested in one or more of these items...if you're not, simply delete them. I, for one, enjoy reading the accounts from the newspaper. I keep hoping that some of my wife's family names will pop up and we will learn a little bit more about them. I thought that was what a news list was for. To have people that you never heard of post something of interest to you. At least that is why I joined the list. I hope people keep posting to the list rather than leaving the rest of us out. I find it rather easy to delete what I have no interest in. Bill O'Neil

EBBurcher: I'm looking for an obit from January 23, 1895 (could have been between Jan 23-30, 1895) for a resident of Bellaire. I've contacted the Bellaire Library for a search for that date, but they tell me the local papers for that time period were destroyed in a fire before they were microfilmed. The obituary I'm looking for is for Thomas H Wallace. He would have been about 55-60 years old when he died of heart problems due to rheumatism contracted while he was a Civil War soldier with Company E, 77th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. His wife was Mary E (Roseberry) Wallace. They had four sons: Howard, Pearle, Harry and Theron. Would the Barnesville Enterprise have possibly carried his obit? He was born and raised in Belmont County. Thanks for anything you can tell me. The rosters I have contain thousands of names and I certainly can't post them all....even looking for specific names is miserable, for the print in this section of the book is VERY small. However, I'll be glad to check for your ancestors' names, if you send them to me.....can't do anything without names. Nor, can I guarantee the completeness of the lists, for they are not my own research...however, it's like anything else; if you don't look you'll not find! There is a National Park Service website called the Soldiers and Sailors System (Civl War) through which one can find some information on units and the names and ranks of the soldiers and sailors.
I was hoping to identify which ancestors and great uncles (who were living in Belmont County) may have served in the Civil War by starting with the regiments which were drawn up in the county. The list will be of great help. However, as noted by others on the list, quite often, names have been missed on transcriptions in books and online. Also, as noted, often a man joined the service, but was sent elsewhere to join a unit.
