Where did Pultney Twp get its name? Thanks.
I wrote a book about Somerton, based on my father's memories of the town, when he spent his summers there as a young boy (1918-1922). The book, Remembering....My Father and Somerton, can be found at the following libraries: Barnesville Hutton Memorial Library in Barnesville; St. Clairsville Public Library in St. Clairsville; and Monroe County District Library in Woodsfield. I would be happy to share my personal photos, newspaper articles, letters, genealogy research, etc., regarding the town of Somerton. Please let me know how I can do that. My father was John WITHERSPOON. He spent his summers in Somerton at the home of his mother's sister and her husband....Irving Addison and Nettie CRANE HODGIN. Martha Witherspoon Kelley Email: [email protected]
Jim has also consented to help me with the Somerton site (my first love) so if you have any Somerton Ohio Pictures or data that you want to share, send them on. I will try to get the "Somerton Gleaning" articles posted there in the next couple weeks. My real goal is to get over there this Spring and photograph all the tombstones in the Cemetery next to where the old Dr. Schooley house was - this is where my grandparents lived. Belmont Co., to Lucas Co., connections . . . Greetings Bev, [et al] CENSUS: Libbie Newman, p. 89 was in ref. to 1870 Federal Census, [IGS Publ., 1997] English Twp., dwellig # 85. HISTORY: You probably have this, but, just in case ... History of Lucas Co., IA, [LCGS, 1978]: The Seth J. Wood Family [p. 485] "Seth J. Wood was one of the pioneer settlers in Lucas County. He was born 24 January, 1815 probably in Ohio. Little is known of his parents except that his father was a Quaker and a school teacher. On 3 April, 1836, Seth J. Wood married Eliza Ann Newman. They began their married life on a farm in Belmont Co., near Barnesville, Ohio. They were the parents of eight children. Mrs. Wood's parents, the Newmans, migrated to the West settling in Lucas County near Newbern. Most of their children moved with them. Seth Wood and his wife Eliza Newman Wood moved from Ohio to Iowa with their seven children in 1856. A ninth child, Francis Marion, was born 25 May, 1857 in Marion County. Their youngest child, Mary Josephine, was born 13 August 1861. Two sons of Seth Wood served in Civil War. John enlisted in the 15th Iowa REgiment at Knoxville. Isaac was with the 34th Regiment in Chariton. Both men lost their lives. Their graves are somewhere in the South. Mrs. Eliza Wood died 27 July, 1870. In the year 1872, Seth Wood married Susanna Worley. A child, Rose India, was born to them in 1873. Seth Wood was a Quaker, but later in life he united with the Church of Christ. He died at his home on 17 April 1880. Mary Josephine Wood, youngest daughter of Seth and Eliza Wood, married Charles E. Mason on 22 May, 1879. They lived their entire lives in English Township in Lucas County. Charles died 4 May 1942. Mary Wood Mason died 17 February 1943. For the story of their children see The Amos Mason Family." // The James Larkin Family [p. 536] . . . "Nancy Newman was born near Barnesville, Belmont County, Ohio, on February 4, 1835, the daughter of John P. and Lettitia Newman. In the spring of 1854 her parents sold their farm and prepared to move to what was then known as the far west. Their goods were feighted to Wheeling, West Virginia by stage, thence by steamboat on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers as far as Keokuk, Iowa, where they landed. They came as far as Fairfield, Iowa, where they resided for a time. While there Nancy attended school that later became Parsons College. Hearing of the possibilities of the prairies of Lucas County, the father entered land from the government and began preparing a cabin where he established his family. After residing here for awhile the father was elected Judge of Lucas County. While serving in this capacity he was stricken with typhoid fever and passed away, while a comparatively young man. Edmund H. Keen and Nancy Newman were married April 8, 1859. This marriage extended over a period of more than 63 years. Both lived to be nearly 90 years of age. At the time of Mrs. Keen's death in 1924, she was the last of the early pioneers who had settle in English Township. ... Viola May Keen was born in English Township, May 13, 1867, the daughter of Edmund H. and Nancy Newman Keen. She fitted herself to become a teacher and taught before her marriage to James H. Larkin on March 6, 1889." . . .[much more on the Keen-Larkin family in this article.]

I believe my great great Grandmother Mary Hemphill, born in Ireland in 1772 was related to Washington Co, PA, Hemphills, but I have not been able to make a connection with anyone. Mary [Hemphill] married John Steel and lived most of their lives in Dunkard Twp of Greene Co, PA, but was recorded in 1810 as living in Buffalo Twp of Washington Co, PA. Any information you might have on the Hemphills in Washington Co, PA, would be appreciated. I believe they went west about 1840, maybe Ohio. Thanks , Wayne Steel. However, I looked in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses for Monroe Co, OH-There was no Noble Co, OH until 1851-to see if we can find some clues to your John Steel. There were no Hemphills in the county, but plenty of Steels. So here they are for your consideration. File it away; it may come in handy someday. I do know there is some biographical material on Samuel Steel. I believe he was appointed executor of the Estate of _____ Gray, the founder of Graysville. A better way to surf the Belmont Co archvies is the site that allows you to enter a search subject, rather than the other one, which allows you to only check by month..... However, at this time rootsweb is having a problem and this function is down, so you'll just have to check it periodically to find when it comes back on line. http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=ohbelmon/ Sandra HOW DO YOU GET TO THE ARCHIVES ?

Sandra and Mary Beth Of the names that you sent me from the cemeteries in Lucas, County. J. W. England and wife Malinda, W. S. England and Wife Essie. Joseph William England b 1832 and d 1888 Lucas County, IA Joseph married Malinda Taylor A daughter of Joseph and Malinda was Permelia Luella England b 1861 and d 1957 Lucas County, IA and married Edward Stout. The Stout were probably from around Belmont Co., William Sebird England had two wives Essie Viola Duckworth and Iris Elizabeth Piper. Nancy England b 1813 married William Hunt this is where I am connected to the England. Seth J. Wood b 1815 Belmont CO., OH and died in Lucas Co., IA. Seth Wood married Eliza Ann Newman/Neuman and they were all from Belmont, OH. Both families came to Iowa and settled at Newburn, Maron Co., IA. The cemetery at Newburn is in Lucas Co., The town is right on the Marion and Lucas Co. Line. I am sure the other names you listed are all connected but I am not sure how. There was a Percy, Marion Co., IA. That little settlement was also on the Marion and Lucas Co., line. My Mother was raised just a mile East of Newburn and a mile West of Percy. Her name was Winifred Smith. You can see all my names I am looking for are very common and hard to trace. I live in Marion Co., Iowa so if you want something looked up, let me know. Thank you. You might want to look back through the archives for this list. I know, in past years, I've posted a lot of info on the way things 'were'. I looked for you names in various area resources, and can't find any with the spelling you included...closest I could come was Milhoan, Milhone and Milhorn. (the only Milhone was an Albert, who was the city Marshall of Bellaire, in the early 1900s) Sandra a Zane tidbit; I came across this, too, from THE HISTORY OF WHEELING AND OHIO COUNTY......a description by a Mr Riley, an aged citizen. He had been acquainted with some of the Zanes and said that " Col Ebenezer Zane was a thick set, fleshy person and Jonathan, was a tall man, fully 6 feet in height, strong, compactly built and muscular." ----- Original Message ----- From: "tessi" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 8:36 PM Subject: [OHBELMON-L] MILHON >I HAVE A COUPLE OF MILHONS BORN IN BELMONT RACHEL ANN 1841,JOHN HENRY 1839 >,GEORGE 1843,MARTHA ELLEN 1844,NARCISSA 1846,(JONAS 1848 THIS ONE IS >G-G-GRAMPA) JAMES 1850, > PARENTS WERE GEORGE MILHON AND MARY ANN HELPBRINGER THEY MOVED FROM > VIRGINA TO OHIO AFTER 1835 WHERE THEY HAD ONE DAUGHTER AND WERE GONE BY > 1852 TO INDIANA TRYING TO GET AREA INFO FOR THIS TIME PERIOD IN BELMONT I > LIVE IN MICHIGAN ANY HISTORY PLACES TO LOOK UP GREATLY APPRICIATED (IM > ALSO NEW TO COMPUTERS AND GENEALOGY) THANK YOU TERRI >

Jonathan and Ebenezer Zane are my 4th great grandparents, Cynthia dau of Jonathan married Daniel Francis son of Ebenezer. Cynthia had a sister Eliza Jane who married John H. Williams b 26 Jul 1785 m 14 Jul 1810 in Ohio. They named one of their sons Isaac Zane Williams. I would like to know who John H. Williams parents are and does anyone know if he is in any way connected to the John and Isaac being discussed here. Sandra Ferguson <[email protected]> wrote: In THE HISTORY OF WHEELING AND OHIO COUNTY by Cranmer, there is a long narrative about an Indian incident below Fort Henry, in Wheeling, in the spring of 1785.. It involved 3 men, Isaac Williams, Hamilton Carr and a German by the name of Jacob. who were looking after the stock which had been left at the deserted settlement....they were at the mouth of Little Graves Creek when an Indian boat landed there at the creek. They hastened to the site (Carr got there first because he was more active and younger than Williams), and killed the Indians....later they discovered a kidnapped white man in the bottom of the boat....this is the gist, at least, of the incident. In late fall of 1769 Ebenezer, Jonathan and Silas Zane, along with Isaac Williams and 2 others named Robinson (and probably others) set out on the south branch of the Potomac with the intention of settling some of the more western portions of the colony.. An early winter set in and the weather and terrain caused great hardships that winter to the group....they returned home without accomplishing their aims. The following spring the 3 Zane brothers renewed the effort and were more successful than in the previous attempt...(however, the weren't going to KY...they went to Redstone Fort, where Brownsville, Pa is located). It's always interesting, isn't it, to discover the origins of family lore, and see how things so often get 'tweaked' and changed, through the years. There is no mention of a John Williams. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 1:02 AM Subject: *** SPAM *** [OHBELMON-L] Pioneers: Isaac Williams and John Williams, brothers and frontiersmen > Dear Dona and Bob: > > A couple days ago I read that Isaac Williams was 14 when he left > Winchester. > In the back of my mind, something says his parents were killed by Indians > or > had died naturally. from CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF BELMONT COUNTY AND REPREENTATIVE CITIZENS by McKelvey; D. Westlake was a member of the Masonic Lodge.... in 1902.....Bellaire Lodge# 267, organized in 1855.... (I don't know, of course, if this is 'your' D. Westlake, or another.) Benjamin Westlake is among those on a list of prominent citizens of Bellaire (ca 1840-50s) Sandra Daniel Westlake, my great-great grandfather, lived in Bellaire, Ohio, later Glenns Run, Martins Ferry, Ohio, where he died. He and his wife, Elizabeth, are buried at Rose Hill Cemetary, Bellaire, Belmont Co., Ohio. His father, Benjamin, apparently lied about his age when he enlisted with his sons, Daniel and George W., in 1864. See Daniel's service record below. (I have more extensive information on the Westlakes' service if anyone is interested).
In THE HISTORY OF WHEELING AND OHIO COUNTY by Cranmer, there is a long narrative about an Indian incident below Fort Henry, in Wheeling, in the spring of 1785.. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 1:02 AM Subject: *** SPAM *** [OHBELMON-L] Pioneers: Isaac Williams and John Williams, brothers and frontiersmen > Dear Dona and Bob: > > A couple days ago I read that Isaac Williams was 14 when he left > Winchester. > In the back of my mind, something says his parents were killed by Indians > or > had died naturally. Hi, I have several GROVES ancestors buried in the Camplite Baptist Cemetery. I would be interested to learn more about this cemetery. I believe it is in Kirkwood Township. I would like to know if people are still buried there, when it was created, etc. Thank you, Cathy Lampshire
Dear Dona and Bob: A couple days ago I read that Isaac Williams was 14 when he left Winchester. In the back of my mind, something says his parents were killed by Indians or had died naturally. However, this is not "fact." I have not read a complete biography on Isaac Williams, but his name keeps popping up in my readings. If you give me a week, I will review my books and try to find other material through other sources. Meantime, what other genealogy and history do you have on the family. Maybe that will give me a better sense of where to dig. It is always in some indirect way that I discover ore about these pioneers. Thank you for your interest in these fabled and not so fabled heroes of the frontier. I have a question regarding the Isaac Williams that you mentioned and that is do you have any information regarding his ancestors? I know he is from the Winchester, VA area. I am looking for info on his brother, John Williams, who lived in the Guernsey Co. area and helped with the building of Zanes's Trace or making the way from Wheeling to Kentucky along with Ebenezer Zane and his helpers. John Williams was from the Winchester area also and members of my family have said that John and Isaac were brothers or possibly half brothers.
