Hi Dave, Really nice of your to share this site. I have drifted into finding the Worls family of Belmont County and Wheeling area into which Ida May Worls Manley, my grandmother was born. Since I don't live in WV now, it is difficult to do my own research. I will try to give this site a try in the near future and let you know what I found. Thanks for sharing! I am looking for information on a William Clark, born about 1814 in VA. He is listed in the 1839 Wheeling directory as a "Ohio River Pilot". In 1850 he is in Ohio County, VA with his wife Ruth (b. ca 1818 in VA) and children: Elizabeth (Mary Elizabeth), b. ca 1840 in VA, David B. (possibly also known as Blashford or Blash), B. ca 1843 in VA, William H., Jacob B., both b. ca 1846 in VA and Samuel M., b. ca 1849. The family is in Wheeling in 1860 and in Pease Twp., Belmont County in 1870 and 1880. Son Jacob B. was also apparently a river pilot. Other children were John E., b. ca 1851 in VA James B., b. ca 1854 in VA Hervey M (Harry) b. ca 1858 in VA A Rebecca Whitten, age 55, b. PA, sister-in-law, also appears with the family in the 1880 census. Would anyone have any information on these people? Thanks Paul
My four great grandfather was Evan Phillips who was born in Wales about 1760. Evan married Jane Unknown about 1782 and died in Belmont County, Ohio by January 1824. Based upon the name of one of their daughters I suspect Jane’s maiden name was Latimer as this daughter was named Jane Latimer Phillips. Evan is shown on the 1785/6, 1790/91 and 1795 Property Tax Lists of Ohio County, Virginia (currently West Virginia) as well as 1802, 1803 and 1805 Belmont County Tax List with 160 acres in Richland Township. Evan purchased his Belmont County land the sixth day of May, 1799. The transaction and deed were executed in Jefferson County, Ohio. This deed states that Evan was from the County of Ohio and State of Virginia. Also it states that he paid five hundred and sixty dollars in cash for the property, which was a large sum of money for that time. According to a History of Belmont County Evan, Enoch and John Phillips were early settlers of Belmont County, Ohio. Evan had sons by these names, but they would have been too young to be the persons referred to in this History so these men were probably related to Evan in some way. I have never been able to make any connections. In 1817 a David Phillips from Loudoun County, Virginia also moved to Belmont County, Ohio. He is possibly another brother since I feel he is the David Phillips who was a witness for Jane Phillips’ Will.. At the time of his death Evan still owned the 160 acres of land in Richland Township, Belmont County, Ohio. His son Enoch who had moved to Guernsey County, Ohio, preceded him in death. Evan’s wife, Jane was born between 1775 and 1794 based upon the 1820 Belmont, Ohio census. She died before June 1825 in Belmont County, Ohio. I have a great deal of information on my Phillips ancestors posted on the Belmont and Guernsey County, Ohio GENWEB sites if more information is desired. I would love to communicate with any descendants of these two people and would especially like to know who their ancestors were.
I've been researching my own Baily family, that emigrated to Chester County, PA, in the late 1600s. The name is spelled, in records, as Baily, Bailey and Baley, depending on who was writing the records, and often interchangeably....thus, if I disregarded any spelling I perceived as 'wrong', I'd sure have missed a lot. So, if you're wise, you'll research any and every spelling of the name you come upon, just in case.....remember, it's not necessarily how the family spelled their name, but how the clerk writing the record, thought the name was spelled. Absolutely the ONLY way to know how a person signed their name is to see a signature, which is, unfortunately, as scarce as hens' teeth" I have one family will, that spells the same woman's name 3 completely different ways....I reckon the clerk just couldn't decide HOW the name was spelled! I've looked in my Chester Co records, and unfortunately, while I find a good many Joseph Bailey/Bailys, none with a son named Hamilton... As you have a date for the death of Joseph...1840...why not see if Records and Archives in Chester Co has a will on record for him (my CD of PA wills ends, unfortunately, with 1825). If so, it should contain the name of any children he had...hopefully, Hamilton. Chester Co., PA] and Susanna (Hedges {1774-1844 b. Woodboro (Frederick) MD d/o Joseph and Mary (Wood) Hedges) BAILEY. Hamilton BAILEY (per info sent to me) m. Elizabeth Wiley. He was living at Centreville at the time of his death in 1862. I pass this data along for your further research. I have not researched or documented any of the above data. Once I am confident I can eliminate a line, I do so; consequently, the above Bailey line has no link to mine. I hope this helps you. If nothing else, you have several names to research for further information. Harriet M. In the 1830s-forward, there was a Crumtown in Noble Co OH. Perhaps that is a location to consider. Another clump of the CRUMs in my database are from Ravenswood WV/VA. No Ohio deaths were officially recorded before 1867, at the state or county level, so the only place to find a death 'record' in this timeframe would be in extant church records...or, as an obituary in a local newspaper. However, in those days obits were not put into the paper as they are today, and had to be paid for by the family, if they wanted one printed...so, many folks didn't bother doing so. I looked in Hinshaws Quaker Encyclopedia, for a Christina Crumb/Crumm/Crum, and none was found. This record includes many Ohio mm records. The only Crums I find in any of these records appear in the Upper Springfield Meeting, located in Columbiana Co...the earliest one is in 1869, a Laura, dau of C.C. and L.C. (just using initials sure isn't very helpful, is it!) The next ones are in the mid to late 1880s. So, I don't see any reason to think your Crums were Quakers. I checked THE STORY OF BARNESVILLE, by Shephard, and the only Crum mentioned is a Harley, who operated a Cigar factory in the 1930s.
