    3. I think the NARA has tons of old photos, but I find their site very difficult to navigate; maybe someone else can tell you. Also, just try googling at "images" section for "Ohio River" and "old Ohio River' and you might bring some up (well, you WILL bring up a ton of pictures, but you will have to wade through a bunch of them). Also, try googling (not the images section) "NARA + photos of the Ohio River" -- it might brings up some photos that let you into the right section of the NARA site. Nancy

    2. Then there is the story of Morgan's Raiders during the Civil War. They rode all across the state from Ripley to Meigs County so they could ford the Ohio River at Buffington Island in water only two feet deep. Neil E. In a message dated 5/1/2007 4:36:58 P.M. 2. Sorry, I haven't read the earlier posts in this thread. When were the dams built? My parents used to row a boat across the river from West Wheeling to Wheeling. That would have been in the forties. Were the dams built after that? Susan ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. My father grew up in Bellaire, Ohio and it was the thing to do to see if you could swim across the river. I also have a newspaper article about him and friends hitching a ride on some kind of riverboat--they were on a raft, got tired, and got a tow. What a different era, you wouldn't hear about either of these things happening now, I bet. There must have been barges back in the 1930s-40s, I can't imagine taking a such risk and swimming across that wide river, but I am a prissy-pants anyway. Nancy

    3. Interesting, fascinating stories regarding the Ohio River. My dad was born and raised in Lawrence Co., at the southern tip of Ohio. He has done many of the things that have been discussed including swim racing other farm boys across the river, involved in auto races on the ice, even across the river and back. This would have been before 1920 and shortly after. But to me the most interesting was my dad describing wading the river (obviously before the dams) in the summer time when the Ohio River was no more than waist deep. The river we see today is not the same river without the dams. Henry S. Dillon

    3. There didn't have to be a flood to have drownings in the Ohio River. Kids swam in the river regularly. My brother in law grew up in West Wheeling and headed to the river to swim each day when his mother went to work. He heard once that a boy was missing (in the 1940's)and got into a boat and told them where to take him and dove in and found the body as soon as he went into the water.I would venture a guess that there were drownings every year-from swimming and recreational activities. 1. [OHBELMON] WV death index
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. Have you checked the WV death index....it includes Ohio & Marshall Cos, past 1917, so your ancestor should be included. http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_dcsearch.aspx Sandra " I don't know an exact date. I am using census that her and her daughter were on and then the grandmother is taking care of the daughter. She was on a boat trip on the river and drown while with husband and friends. So she was alive in 1910 and gone by 1920 so that is where I get my dates. I have no idea where to start to try and find her."

    1. [OHBELMON] Ohio River Floods
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. I have the height of the waters and the years of the floods, from 1762 through 1996, if anyone is interested...there were only 2 floods between 1910 and 1920...past these 2 the next flood was in 1924. Jan 9, 1913 March 28, 1913 The worst flood was in March of 1936, when the height was 555 ft, a whopping 54 feet above flood level.. (I have an actual one sheet flood edition put out by the Wheeling News-Register on March 19, 1936.) Sandra

    1. Re: [OHBELMON] Question on Ohio River
    2. What was her husband and daughter's names? Where was she in the1910 census? I've checked the Ohio Death Index and there is only one Ella Howe d. 9-20-1914 in Lorain Co Vol #1460 Cert #51195. What is her husband's name, did he die also? We could check to see if his name is there as well. 3. I believe you'll find that the State of WV owns the Ohio River for the entire area that it forms the border...and, there are many WV counties that border the river....from top to bottom; Hancock, Brook (both appear just north of Ohio Co, in the northern panhandle), Marshall, Wetzel, Tyler, Pleasants, Wood, Jackson, Mason, Putnam, and Cabell. " The portion of the Ohio River that borders Belmont County belongs to the state of West Virginia and the two WV counties that border the river there are Marshall and Ohio Counties.

    2. I had family that lived on Wheeling Island during that time and it flooded several times, but I think 1913 was the worst and there were deaths, so if you don't know the exact date, etc. you might started with the 1913 flood and see what turns up. I checked the Belmont County papers that I have obituares from and didn't see anything for that spelling after the turn of the century,,, Pam ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
